The Google Phone: The Story So Far and What's Next

Why does it have to be Java? Maybe it's just me but I've always found Java to be a bitch to work with. I've dropped every Java class I ever started because the code would never compile and none of my instructors could ever sort out why. It's pretty bad when you have step by step install instructions and the sample code won't even compile. It just always struck me as more trouble than it is worth. Perhaps I need to give it another go but there had to be other options.

They need to come up with new names for these devices. Calling them 'phones' is a bit of misnomer as it seems like actually calling people and having conversations with them is not why people get all wet about them. Consumer Money Sucker Devices (CMSD)? Or Fanboy Obsession Objects (FOO)?

Will the handset cost anything? I think a low cost or free phone would be the only reason for me to get a gphone. If its expensive like the iPhone then who cares!

For those that fear that Google will take over the world. I say, "Go ahead." If it means an end to getting screwed over by ISPs and wireless carriers, I'm all for it.
