just thought i'd get that in there - bossm4n, on 01/08/2009, -7/+175Sheds a tear for The Screensavers. Leo rocks.
- PatrickFlorida, on 01/08/2009, -5/+142"3. He focuses on a niche-market.
"'Niche', of course, is just another word for 'nerd.' Most of Laporte's shows are built around the shiny, technical doo-dads that bore the hell out of my wife. She walked in on me watching TWiT one day, and I think she was disappointed that I wasn't watching porn."
Dugg. - inactive, on 01/08/2009, -1/+127I miss the days of old Tech TV with Kevin, Leo, Patrick, Morgan, Sarah, Adam and Kate (YUM KATE!). That was the best TV around, it even educated my 50something year old mom to understanding the computer better and not calling me every 3 days. Then G4 came in, dumbed it down, fired half the staff, and turned it from an enjoyable educational geeky station into a video game channel... It lost me, my mom and a large tech crowed. Bringing in Chi-Lan was like the Brady Bunch bringing in Cousin Oliver.
- MrARPA, on 01/07/2009, -3/+101I hope Leo makes a success of his venture, it's certainly both interesting and entertaining.

- inactive, on 01/08/2009, -2/+48***** G4. They came in and took a huge ***** all over the coolest network on TV.
- HamSandwich, on 01/08/2009, -21/+66I've followed Leo since the summer of 98 when I first found The Screen Savers, and have been a HUGE fan ever since. But, I have to admit, over the last 6 months or so that I've been battling the idea of dropping TWiT from my podcasts.... and it's mostly because of Leo.
The biggest problem is that I don't trust his objectivity anymore. It practically pains him to say anything bad about Apple (and likewise, good things about MS)... but at least Dvorak brings some sense to it. All of his opinions on the internet seem to be wishes for things that will build up his little empire (free internet for everyone, TV is dead, etc) Don't even get me started on his 10 minute gushing ads for Audible.
It also seems to me like he's growing jealous of everyone. He constantly harps on Twitter for stealing the TWiT name, and he can't even mention Kevin without getting some kind of jab in at him ("he's too big for our show" "I was referred to his agent" "he wanted to charge an appearance fee"). I know he's only kidding, but he's sounding more and more like a bitter old man (with a honey drenched voice).
I love you Leo, but PLEASE go back to being Leo! - mrkalolo, on 01/08/2009, -13/+53I'm a TWIT

lol, I think it's part of the charm... he speaks his mind, sometimes a little much, hehe... but it is a good thing :D - RedBear, on 01/08/2009, -3/+34I don't get spam!
- adam1378, on 01/08/2009, -1/+30And early TechTV
- px1138, on 01/08/2009, -6/+33I disagree. (I don't own anything Apple and don't follow twit podcasts religiously)
Can't someone prefer something over something else?
And on audible. Did you complain about the commericials during Screensavers?
"Don't get me started about the 3 commercial breaks on Screensavers, what sellouts!!"
Why do you feel so entitled to no advertisements and Leo not stating his opinion? Why does he owe you that? - GordonClass, on 01/08/2009, -1/+27That was a great show and yes G4 ruined it.
- TheBongos, on 01/08/2009, -1/+24He doesn't come off as abrasive like most TV show hosts, he's just chill, like your incredibly nerdy friend telling you about all the cool ***** going on in the world of tech.
- TheFrozenOne, on 01/08/2009, -1/+23i was severely pissed when G4 took over. They turned silver into ***** as far as Im concerned. Is that channel even on anymore?
- ccalabro, on 01/08/2009, -2/+20he must never sleep
macbreak and twit are pretty good podcasts. - hark, on 01/08/2009, -11/+29That is because you are a TW@T
- chaoswings, on 01/08/2009, -1/+19yep, G4 is crap Lab with Leo is the only decent show they have running. I mean I like videogames but I don't need 10 shows all rolling over the same content.
The video game reviews suck anyway because they only review the big name brands...and they are never honest with their reviews anyway. What's the point of rating a game out of 10 if the lowest you ever go is a 5 because your afraid of pissing off a company. The industry is still too young...the industry should be afraid of reviewers not the other way around. - timedalkat, on 01/08/2009, -2/+18Congrats on this one Leo, you deserve it.
- StinkyWizlteats, on 01/08/2009, -2/+18From someone in the tv industry, it's great to see someone stick to his guns, do it himself, and be successful. It's a bloated, sick business.
- solid12345, on 01/08/2009, -0/+15Hell if only they had even turned it into a gaming only channel, now it is a poor man's Spike TV trying to copy all the guy-centric shows. And do we really want to watch cops in syndication on ANOTHER channel?
- AmaDaden, on 01/08/2009, -1/+16I get the feeling that he pretends to know less then he does so the experts (that he knows know more then him and that are there to talk) can explain things. He plays the 'common man' so that the real common man will not be lost and will have the questions (that Leo knows they would want to ask if they were there) be answered.
Also, I'm a TWiT - shadowmanjack, on 01/08/2009, -0/+14And with such great shows like The Screen Savers, Eye Drops, Secret, Strange & True, Extended Play (before G4 and Morgan Webb turned it all to hell) and Big Thinkers.
- dn11, on 01/08/2009, -1/+15the key factor this article doesn't acknowledge is that Leo is a nationally syndicated radio talk show host who airs on Clear Channel stations across the country - the podcasts and the live feed are more like a hobby or side project that happens to tie in very well with the radio program. He may be one of the stars of independent new media - but it's significant that he still makes his living working for the Clear Channel radio hegemony. So I'm not so sure he represents the future of TV so much as someone who has been lucky enough to fall into a niche where he can do what he loves 4-5 days a week and then pay the bills 2 days a week. I like the stuff leo and other indie podcasters do, but it isn't clear to me that a new business model for independent producers is anywhere in sight yet - especially with this economy
- GreenNoise, on 01/08/2009, -1/+15I just like to mention that the Security Now netcast with Leo and Steve is pretty good too.
- rodrigo74, on 01/08/2009, -1/+14"Leo has always favored Apple as an end user, but relies on a lot of PC (Windows & Linux) solutions to run the shows"
Do you know how people call this type of person? a prolific geek. Every smart tech guy should be able to use whatever tool is best for the job at hand. Nothing wrong with that.
"I still remember when he flipped out about Apple changing over to Intel Processors as if that was the end of the world. So that pendulum swings both ways over time."
..just like you, and me, and everyone else, right? Leo is a guy doing a "live" show, not a corporation that must have some sort of set-in-stone positions.
I love TWiT, have been a donator for a few years now, and one of the reasons why I like it is because Leo is sometimes inconsistent, sometimes impulsive, sometimes he is just plain wrong, which is totally fine and expected for someone putting so many hours of free, fresh content every week. The day TWiT become serious and consistent and never drop a bleep like CNN is the day I'm off. - craterburnsu, on 01/08/2009, -0/+13Leo while not being super informed in every subject, does have at least a basic knowledge set in a ton of sectors, and he is smart enough to bring in the people who have expertise in the areas they are discussing.
- jbmcb, on 01/08/2009, -4/+17I prefer Calacanis' imitation of Dvorak to Dvorak himself. Less wordy and the same amount of information.
- iankino, on 01/08/2009, -1/+14Watching Screensavers was one of those things I looked forward to everyday in Middle School. He and Patrick taught me everything I needed to know about being a computer nerd.
Edit: Which is out of date knowledge now, but he and Patrick are what raised me to be what I am today. - binnis, on 01/08/2009, -0/+13I think it's "I get no spam."
Here's the song for it http://music.tenhauser.com/nospamix_02.mp3 - reddikilowatt, on 01/08/2009, -1/+14From TFA: "Okay, so the numbers aren't impressive, but the fact that they're low and that Laporte is still making a living is exactly what makes TWiT such a good model for how other self-motivated broadcasting talents are going to make the migration to the internet."
I think he still has a syndicated radio show that is his primary source of income:
http://premrad.com/shows/view/leo_laporte.html
He said many time while setting up the studio that he was burning through cash and had no real business model, just that he wants to see what happens.
That said, I signed up for an Audible account because of his ads. - mattsidesinger, on 01/08/2009, -1/+13dvorak.org/blog

What? Where did they get that kinda info from? Leo rents a place, he isn't working out of his basement. -
