- dmcbride6, on 12/18/2008, -1/+11Don't get sucked into anything having to do with ClearWire. I was forced to pay for nearly 9 months after not being able to use the service due to moving - or pay an early termination fee. Ofcourse they claim that if they cannot provide you service, you can cancel without the fee..
What's even better is the service contract is signed online - and they don't actually send you a copy of it.
Finally got the BBB involved and after 2 months going back and forth they allowed me to cancel without the termination fee.
We should be digging: http://clearwiresucks.com/blog/ - kylebrothert, on 12/18/2008, -0/+8"Clearwire is expected to expand the network around the country and expects to launch the service in Portland, Oregan in early January."
Where is Portland, Oregan? - Izzmo, on 12/18/2008, -0/+6Ignorance is bliss.
Considering Spring is based in Kansas City, Kansas you moron. If you didn't know.. Kansas is in the United States. - mmittimm, on 12/18/2008, -0/+6Well good luck getting a phone on any major carrier without one.
- Izzmo, on 12/18/2008, -0/+5Ya.. because that just sounds so absurd!
Every carrier has this... nothing new. - Norumeni, on 12/18/2008, -1/+5For some reason your digg down button won't work for me; BOO!
- RomeyRome, on 12/18/2008, -1/+5Then just pay full price for the modem.
- kylebrothert, on 12/18/2008, -1/+4Oh, and Clearwire sucks even worse than Sprint!
- imneveral0ne, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3Sprint>ATT
at least where i live. ATT calls get dropped all the time around here. (Detroit, MI) - mrsteveman1, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3Yea, all $15 dollars it cost to manufacture
- robdiggity, on 12/18/2008, -0/+3You're absolutely right, it is. Now go set up your own network and start using it. No one will stop you.
Or, recognize that the carriers that operate networks purchase devices from OEMs at full price, and then sell them at a loss to subscribers with fixed contracts in order to offset the device subsidy and make a profit. See? - rnelsonee, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2I'm glad you posted this - I'll check the blog out out.
But I will defend their existing WiMax service. Cellular is something else, but the WiMax has been great so far. They just acquired XOHM, which has been the company that started the WiMax deployment. XOHM not only doesn't require contracts - it's not even an option. And you don't rent their modems either. It's all pay-as-you-go, and I'm paying $25.00 even every month for internet - no taxes or hidden fees.
Now, they're not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts - with no contract they don't need a Service Level Agreement, so my bandwidth can crap out and I'll have no recourse really. But their customer service has been great, and they really seem to be a good company to deal with. We'll see how much of those employees make it over to Sprint. Either way, until WiMax is more proven, I bet you'll see month-to-month plans as the only option for another year or two which should cut down on a lot of those bad customer experiences. - 13OOM, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2WTH is spring?
- RomeyRome, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Irrelevant. Free market. They set the price, and you either pay it or you don't.
- robdiggity, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Comes after winter, and just before summer.
- Adamlite, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2I can't believe WiMax is finally getting off the ground.
- dmcbride6, on 12/19/2008, -0/+1This is pretty subjective as it really depends on where you live (as you pointed out)
Verizon blows hard in the great Seattle area. However, is some cities further north west (just over the water - Port Angeles comes to mind), Verizon is just about the only service that receives decent signal everywhere. - miguad98, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1After 10 years. I couldn't handle Sprint's Horrific customer service operation. I also couldn't stand the constant "phone envy" vs. AT&T and Verizon customers. It all came to a head just recently, and I left the service, just ahead of their awe-ful earnings announcement. Check out my story at http://www.icechatter.blogspot.com Digg me!
- Twee, on 12/18/2008, -1/+2Are they going to put a 5GB bandwidth cap on their WiMax service too? The only wireless provider for 3G internet (via a laptop connect car) that doesn't have a 5GB bandwidth cap is T-Mobile, plus theirs is cheaper than everyone else. But I really don't get why all of the carriers have to put a 5GB bandwidth cap on their broadband services that people are paying $60-$70 per month for, yet they give unlimited (AFAIK) for tethered $30/month blackberry plans... What gives?
- TimDigg, on 12/19/2008, -0/+1I live in Baltimore....we had WiMax like yesterday.....
- robdiggity, on 12/18/2008, -0/+1But neither will the digg up button. See, I'm a "half-full" kinda guy.
- dext3r, on 12/18/2008, -1/+2Its right by Beaverton. Use your brain, moran.
- tinkafoo, on 12/18/2008, -7/+7They had me going until the phrase "two-year contract".
 - kaosethema, on 12/19/2008, -1/+1thumbs up, good sir
many thanks for the info. - mmittimm, on 12/18/2008, -4/+4I don't think Sprint is going to last long enough for this service to be launched. I wouldn't recommend anyone shell out the extra bucks for it.
- tinkafoo, on 12/18/2008, -2/+1Precisely my point! 802.16 was supposed to be a general wireless spec, not "another cellphone network".
You don't need a two-year contract to use a wireless NIC, do you? - lancedice, on 12/18/2008, -5/+4Stay away from anything with Sprint...
It took me two months (just ended today) to cancel my account and them to get the billing straightened out. They were trying to charge me for the early termination fee on all three phones when two had no contract. Also their "iPhone killer" aka Instinct blows. My fiance weren't even getting our calls with them. They said the iPhone has much worse problems...we switched to ATT the next day and both got iPhones and oddly enough, neither of us have had any problems.
And Clearwire sucks too. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 12/18/2008, -3/+1It's "it's", MorOn.
- manacit2, on 12/18/2008, -15/+1
- 13OOM, on 12/18/2008, -17/+3Wimax is just a crappy, british version of the internet...
when will they learn
