- eramos, on 08/25/2009, -0/+14Why would you want eBook readers to replace books instead of improve upon them? Anyone who lies in bed and reads knows that the one page layout is a godsend
- Strider817, on 08/25/2009, -2/+11I decided not to go with the Kindle after that 1984 book disappearance debacle, and it looks like we finally have a device that can compete against it. Plus it has PDF support, and I'm not tied to only using the Amazon format. I will have to strongly consider getting this.
- thcobbs, on 08/25/2009, -0/+5Get back to me when you can read an ebook on a netbook for two weeks without a recharge.
- nesagwa, on 08/25/2009, -0/+4Sony's reader came out a year before the kindle, will (already doesn't) have no way to remotely disable their LRF books or any ePub standard book that the new readers will support.
"Amazon will convert any PDFs for free"
Taking control of your content out of your hands. You dont need to send your content off to some service to get it on your Reader.
***** Amazon. - ahhell, on 08/25/2009, -0/+4You obviously have never tried reading an ebook on a smartphone. It sucks donkey balls.
- nesagwa, on 08/25/2009, -0/+3eInk my friend.
- esc27, on 08/25/2009, -0/+3It costs more than a PS3...
- rusty0101, on 08/25/2009, -0/+3It costs less than a new Vaio
- SkippyDoorknob, on 08/25/2009, -0/+3Kindle DX has native PDF support.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 08/25/2009, -0/+2Kindle DX has native PDF support that doesn't require Amazon to convert them for you.
- Elranzer, on 08/26/2009, -0/+2$199 EZ Reader is the same price as Sony's Pocket Edition ($199), and Sony's can read all of the non-DRM formats as well as its eBook Store that's nearly as big as Amazon's Kindle store.
- brianpeiris, on 08/25/2009, -0/+2Dugg for more competition in the ebook reader market. I've got a first-gen Sony Reader and the worst thing about it is finding and formatting content. Also, as far as I've seen, Sony's ebook library is not really the most comprehensive; finding titles is hit and miss at best.
A unified library across all devices would be a dream come true.
For those whining about the price, calm down, no one is forcing you to buy this and books will be available in cheap analog format for decades yet. Besides, it's still early days for the market, expect falling prices as with any technology - eldridgea, on 08/26/2009, -0/+1Is the screen e-ink as well as touchscreen?
The e-ink was always a big selling point for the Kindle (and the original Sony e-reader) for me.
Also, free Wikipedia browsing anywhere is nice. - ziplizard, on 08/25/2009, -0/+1nesagwa: Anyone can convert their content themselves if they want to. Calibre does it and works on PC, Mac, and Linux. (Linux people: it also allows Sony's Reader to be updated using a Linux OS, unlike the software that comes with the Reader)
calibre.kovidgoyal.net/ - EskNerd, on 08/25/2009, -1/+2I wonder if the device's firmware will get hacked and the free 3G will be opened up to email and web browsing.
- reefrmad, on 08/25/2009, -2/+3Access to public libraries via 3G for downloadable free book rentals?
EPIC WIN! - thcobbs, on 08/25/2009, -0/+1I read for hours at a time, whenever I get the chance because I have a little one who's fascinated with computers. So, I usually have to leave my ebook reader up and out of reach.
When I finally get a chance to sit down and read, I don't want to have to wait for it to charge up because I forgot to leave it on the charger the last time I had to get up and do something quickly. - Rudegar, on 08/25/2009, -0/+1I read all my books on my smartphone read 30+ so far
- KyotoWolf, on 08/25/2009, -0/+1@Jason
It's not the software ahhell is talking about, it's the screen. You won't be able to read a book on your netbook or smartphone if it's too sunny and you won't be able to read for hours at a time as it'll strain your eyes. - ziplizard, on 08/25/2009, -0/+1It's awesome seeing a 7" display. The 6" display that most readers have always feels a tad to small. I am looking forward to when these new Sony Readers go on display so I can see if they fixed the 700's fuzzy text or not.
- crazyvegas, on 08/25/2009, -0/+1The EZ Reader Pocket PRO looks very promising: http://www.theezreader.com/ It supports over 20 open formats and is only $199. It does lack wifi or a 3g connection but I'm fine transferring via sd card or direct usb connection and saving $290 (Kindle with native pdf) or $200(Sony).
- zbeast, on 08/26/2009, -0/+1So is the cell service part of the price or must you get a full fee cellular service with dataplan for it .. $60 a month.
I also hope that sony has fixed the quality of there touch screen.
there old touch screen was dull and kind of foggy... Making the hard to read text even harder to read.
Also it being on the att 3g network i'm not impressed considering how back ATT network coverage is.
ATT more dead zones in more places. - robbiedo, on 08/26/2009, -0/+1I really don't care about the wireless for buying books; however the FREE cellular with the Kindle has other uses as noted by that famous XKCD comic. I have the Sony PRS-505, and I don't miss the lack of wireless for book purchases, or acquisition. It certainly has ZERO impact on the book reading experience, at this point, but that may change in the future if the cellular is used for hyperlinks within books. Of course, at that point, I doubt it would be free with the Reader, but sold as a service.

No, you can only waste your battery faster in major cities (most ebooks are only a couple dozen k)
"Will it work over Edge as well?"
Yes And will probably even work as long as there is a *gasp* AT&T-approved(includes roaming) signal! - clouisdhon, on 08/28/2009, -0/+0www.e-bookconnect.com
- Anevilweasel, on 08/25/2009, -1/+1When new technology hits it is suppose to justify its higher price tag by being better than the current competition. Unfortunately this seems like a marginal improvement to the Kindle. The AT&T 3G...so it can be used in major cities but no where else? Will it work over Edge as well? cause if not that is a MAJOR downside. I do like that they've finally added mac support. Hopefully competition will keep rolling out forcing Amazon and Sony to keep improving.
- Wander2000, on 08/26/2009, -1/+1Sony Boss: "Make me a new product that is proprietary to us so nobody can steal it, and we won't license it to anyone, I want to be Super Super rich".
Sony Worker: But Mr. Bossman, we tried that with the Betamax, the memory stick, the Blu-Ray isn't selling well, we don't have contracts with book publishers.....
Sony Boss: "You're fired" - ziplizard, on 08/25/2009, -2/+2You know on the 1984 thing, everyone got a rebate, and it only got the coverage it did because of what book it was (it wasn't the first time a book was published in the Amazon store by a person who didn't own the copyright that Amazon removed). Also, Amazon said they won't delete people's books again because of all the bad press so you don't have anything to worry about.
And good luck buying books for your Sony. The Sony store is a lot smaller than the Amazon one if you're looking for copyright books. - ahhell, on 08/25/2009, -5/+4$400??? FAIL.
- jasonbarone, on 08/25/2009, -1/+0That's my point. But phones are getting easier and faster to navigate and read articles and websites. If there was a good application out there that did most of what the kindle or reader does, I'd rather give up some features, to be able to read from the same device I do everything else on.
- cutlerite, on 08/25/2009, -2/+1Seriously? The same thing will happen with a Sony DRM book. You can read and buy non DRM ebooks, and Amazon will convert any PDFs for free (you aren't stuck to the amazon format). The newest kindle supports PDFs too.
I get books from these sites:
http://ireaderreview.com/2008/01/19/free-books-for ...
Sorry Sony, long time fan, but you're too late and too expensive. - jasonbarone, on 08/25/2009, -1/+0I get that, but two weeks of battery life? How long do you go without being near a charger? I just don't see myself ever carrying around something like this that only reads ebooks, I want to carry less hardware that does more, if there's a well-built app for a smartphone or netbook, I'd rather go for that. Then I can access email, internet and read.
- football1124, on 08/25/2009, -5/+2$400? i am shocked!
- Elranzer, on 08/25/2009, -5/+2It's the first eBook reader that seems to display two pages side by side, kinda like a real book.
It's a same it's $400, but the ability to view two pages side by side... makes the eBook reading experience a bit closer to replacing real books. - jasonbarone, on 08/25/2009, -5/+0Why doesn't someone develop a good app that offers the same functionality? Instead of purchasing and carrying around yet another piece of hardware, you can use your smartphone or netbook...
