I remember as a kid being one of the first to see Star Wars and there was hardly any line to see it. I think that most people thought the movie might be rather cheesy because of the history of science fiction films. A week later, there was a line that wrapped around the theater four times to see it (there was only one movie theater carrying Star Wars in Phoenix). The story and the effects were definitely a turning point for Sci-Fi films.
