engadget.com — n what is surely the opening salvo of the robot insurrection, a 45-year old Danish municipal worker was tragically killed by a robotic industrial lawnmower this afternoon, after the unit tumbled off a slope and onto his head.

Looks like I was beaten to the punch. Anyway, let me tell you a little about lawnmowers. I woke up this morning and the landscaping crew was cutting the grass in my apartment complex. Much to my surprise, it has also slightly rained. The smell of spring rain and freshly cut grass made for a nice walk from my door to my car. The end. - ICSU, on 10/11/2007, -2/+30Guerrilla marketing for Transformers has gone too far :/

- DrMickhead, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12But those Cyberdine lawnmowers were so cheap! I knew there had to be a catch.
- Gerz1219, on 10/11/2007, -10/+5So the city saved $8 an hour by eliminating a landscaping job, which could have gone to a poor person trying to support a family, and killed a man in the process.
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8The robot was RC controlled so the guy still had his job only he didn't have to sit on top of the lawnmower. Also, minimum wage in Denmark is $12/hour.
- Gerz1219, on 10/11/2007, -10/+2Okay, so then the landscaper's comfort took precedence over a human life, because the accident was almost certainly due to the landscaper's inability to see changes in elevation from a distance. Missed the part about the lawnmower being remote controlled, the video (and the article's title) seemed to imply that this thing ran by itself. Either way, the point is that there is absolutely no need for robot lawnmowers.
- rauz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3The video clearly showed a man controlling the robot from a distance, it was right at the beginning and the speaker said something about safety.
I see what you're trying to get at here but I really can't form an opinion about the need of robotic lawnmowers just based on this (so far) random accident - I'd have to assume that no European municipal organisation would buy one of these unless they saw a need/gain for it. - gnalle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It must be cheaper to build a remote controlled lawn mover than a lawn mover that is big enough to have a seat. But in both cases you need to make sure that it doesn't tumble, or at least the poor guy should have had an easier time guessing whether or not the robot would tumble.
- benjaoming, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@rauz

Now we know, Morpheus!! - StandardsDT, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3It says that he died because the lawnmower tumbled off the hill. This leads me to believe that it was his own fault because he either A) did not use the safety device that comes equipped with it for use on hills or B.) it fell over a ledge and landed on him. If it was tumbling down the hill he could have thrown the RC Controller on the ground and at least stopped the blades from spinning and only suffer minor injuries. In fact why the hell didn't he just step out of the way? I'm guessing I'm the only one who watched the video huh?
- gnalle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't see any safety device on the product page. Maybe you have more information than me. But they do mention that the robot can only climb 40 degrees.
http://www.spider-cz.com/index.php?id=9
I don't think that it is fair to blame the man for not jumping out of the way. He obviously did not expect the robot to tumble. - ApeInago, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2there is a winch you can attach to it. and it senses tilt for auto shutoff.
- gnalle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I don't see any safety device on the product page. Maybe you have more information than me. But they do mention that the robot can only climb 40 degrees.
- ChayD, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3A tragic industrial accident (and bad taste those of you who joked). Hopefully the manufacturer will now consider adding tilt sensors that will prevent the machine working on gradients over a certain percentage unless it senses that a tether is attached.

"In 1981 Kenji Urada, a 37-year-old Japanese factory worker, climbed over a safety fence at a Kawasaki plant to carry out some maintenance work on a robot. In his haste, he failed to switch the robot off properly. Unable to sense him, the robot's powerful hydraulic arm kept on working and accidentally pushed the engineer into a grinding machine. His death made Urada the first recorded victim to die at the hands of a robot."
