- Leems, on 01/13/2009, -10/+35*****, I just read the title as 'PALIN's startegy for a comeback....'.
- MahirH, on 01/13/2009, -0/+14$200 without contract? HIGHLY unlikely. The G1 costs 400 without, and this thing has better hardware specs. (As far as I can tell).
- ironhide, on 01/13/2009, -0/+9You're not the only one.
- merreborn, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8Looking at the slide show... what's the deal with the rounded corners on the display? That seems like a pretty spectacularly idiotic choice, what with every single web page being designed around the assumption of a display with square corners.
This picture shows the best example:
http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow_viewer/0,1205,l%253 ...
Notice the PC Mag icon in the upper left hand corner is cropped. - masterkenobi, on 01/13/2009, -0/+8I have to admit, I jumped off the Palm bandwagon after the Treo 700p. It was my 5th Palm and I had a love/hate relationship with it (been a Palm user since the Palm Professional). Though once my new-every-two comes up, I'll look to see what's out. If Palm is still around and has a solid smartphone out, I'd be willing to switch back.
- TheOceanic666, on 01/13/2009, -2/+7I always thought the IPhones OS was a blatant rip off of the satellite phones which were brought to the island.
Personally, i always felt safer communicating through pneumatic tubes and smoke signals. - mandarin, on 01/13/2009, -0/+5you saw 'Nailin' Palin' didnt you?

...webOS platform is the coolest thing they've seen since the iPhone - paidhima, on 01/14/2009, -0/+5Palm has enjoyed a good relationship with independent developers over the years. I used the 650/700p for a number of years and really liked the incredibly wide array of apps available anywhere from free to fairly modest prices. Many of these apps, created and maintained by independent developers (and sometimes just "some guy") were amazingly high quality. I fully expect that to continue, particularly if Palm can energize their developer base (which, admittedly, has stagnated quite a bit as the Palm OS continued to age) with the new WebOS. Given a little time, I fully expect developers to come out in droves for the phone.
As for the price, you are engaging in a bit of wishful thinking. There's absolutely no way you'll see a phone like this for $200 without contract. I imagine you'll be looking at about $200-250 with contract and a retail price of $400-500 (Palm is fond of the $499-549 retail price range). - flannerus, on 01/13/2009, -0/+5your mom's got a touch screen, and nice apps
- McGuinness, on 01/13/2009, -3/+8The Pre needs a few things to really deliver. I'm excited for this phone and will be getting it, but here are my must haves:
1) The interface lag I noticed in its videos needs to be resolved. If there is any hint of sluggishness in the device people will not adopt it
2) It needs to have a lot of 3rd party support. Apps Apps Apps, not necessarily games. I want to be able to tether it via Bluetooth or WiFi to my laptop and not have to buy it from Sprint. A large amount of Sprint phones do this either natively with USB or via 3rd party software.
3) No required plan. I like the one I have now, making me switch it is going to keep me away
4) They need to introduce it at the right price point with/without contract. I'm thinking $99/contract $199/without. Bottom line, <=$200 for the device without signing my life to Sprint for 2 years. - benutne, on 01/13/2009, -1/+5I'm actually really happy about the Pre. I use Sprint because I have one of the old too good to pass up "Free and Clear" plans with way more minutes than anything being offered today. I had been eyeballing the Centro for a while now, but this looks to be the phone I'll get...if Sprint doesn't require their ***** $99/month everything plan.

- Elranzer, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2"It needs to have a lot of 3rd party support. Apps Apps Apps"
If you want apps, get Windows Mobile or PalmOS. Seriously, the amount of apps available for iPhone and Android are laughable compared to these. - inactive, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2So what have they been doing with that BeOS tech recently?
- roguewriter, on 01/13/2009, -2/+4I'm stuck with Verizon. (Yeah, I know) Most of my family and friends use it. The Pre looks very very promising. However, only way I'll buy one is if Verizon doesn't turn it into crippleware like every other smartphone they've sold. Yes, that includes the Storm. No Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is limited to Hands-Free. The Storm is very cool, very slick and very crippled.
- EtherGnat, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2"If you think iPhone 1.0's sandbox was restrictive wait until you see the palm pre"
I'll really be pushing for Palm to release a full SDK the same way I did Apple. That being said the Pre seems to be providing more OS hooks which should allow for more powerful apps. - ThantiK, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3Lets get this straight - people are hyped up over...
Web
OS?
If you think iPhone 1.0's sandbox was restrictive wait until you see the palm pre. Also - I love texting to people in portrait mode...wait no I don't. I honestly don't see how people are excited about this device. Palm will be dying a quick death when this is released. Long live Android. - nurall, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2speaking of sprint my "Free and Clear" rate is now about $12/mo less.
this started about 3 mos ago. anyone else? i didn't threaten to leave or anything. - randomstupid, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Palm had it all a few years ago ... shows what a lack of vision / common sense does to a company
- SteveMax, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2*déjà vu
- Vagabond0, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2This first version's major flaw is the lack of a memory card slot.
- randomstupid, on 01/14/2009, -0/+22nd that ... page info lost to the viewer
- BTime, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2It's definitely a cool device, but it's ability to save Palm will come down to cost. They should try to offer this as cheap as possible to achieve as large a market penetration as possible. Let's see if their marketing department is as savvy as their techies.
- TheCollective00, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Jimmy Two Times
- paidhima, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1You can't compare an iPod Touch to a Palm phone. For an apples to apples comparison, look at the array of smart phones available - specifically Windows-based phones and Palm-based phones. Blackberries and iPhones are not entirely among the same market segment from a cost perspective, as RIM and Apple receive royalties from monthly data charges on their phones.
Palm only gets one crack at you when you buy their phone. They don't receive monthly "kickbacks" from your cell plan, so they need to make their money on your purchase. Additionally, there's the question of volume and product diversity. Palm doesn't sell their phones in anywhere near the volume that a standard cell manufacturer does, so they have to make money with fewer sales. There's also the question of product line diversity. Historically, Palm has only had one major model at a time, replacing the previous model with something new as time goes on. They did diversify a bit with the Centro, but they were already in bad shape when they released it.
Finally, remember that the price you pay is not the price that Palm sold it to your provider for. Your provider adds a nice margin to the cost of that phone as an incentive for customers to renew contracts for a discount. - nurall, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1
oh yea, ive been without a contract for about a year. - dagr8tim, on 01/13/2009, -0/+1Dupe

- MCA2142, on 01/13/2009, -1/+2I'm gonna get the papers, get the papers.
- consciousman, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1I want this phone
- Twee, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1The rounded corners are there because applications are "cards" -- which have rounded corners.
- Twee, on 01/15/2009, -0/+1Why can't they sell phones like this at $200-$300? The iPod touch starts at $229 for the 8GB model. While I understand that a phone has more components to add in, that shouldn't add more than $100 to the cost unless broadcom charges some really ***** ridiculous royalties.
- Elranzer, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1They're either going for the Web2.0 look or the 1950s TV look (knowing how Palm likes old things, it may be the latter).
- Elranzer, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1"new-every-two"
You must be a fellow Verizon customer. Unfortunately, Verizon is always LAST to get the good phones, unless they made an exclusivity deal (in the case of the Palm 700w). Though it's always technically possible to activate Sprint phones on Verizon (and vice-versa) due to them both being CDMA. - inactive, on 01/14/2009, -1/+2I actually think that this phone has been overhyped in a karmatic way in an attempt to help the dying Palm, this is thanks mostly to Engadget. The phone isn't bad. I don't know the pricing but it looks really good. But it's been overhyped IMHO.
- gdmuscle, on 01/14/2009, -0/+1After seeing this phone on the CES show by G4tv, I'm again starting to hate my iphone. Still can't understand the trend with the touch screen. If this phone has haptic feedback, voice dialing user independent like the razr2, tethering, and all the features that the expensive Iphone should have, anyone want to buy an IPhone 3G? Seems Apple is loosing their edge on functionality rather than asthetics, can't put looks in favor of functionality get with it Apple.
- HOWELLZX804, on 01/14/2009, -1/+1It won't make any difference seeing as how you will most likely be zoomed into the particular part of the page you want to look at!
