- haharr, on 01/13/2009, -2/+30Welcome back Palm! I've missed you during the whole PDA / cell-phone merger period a coupla years back. And Palm is still the simplest operating system I've used.
- kflott, on 01/13/2009, -0/+24Really anxious to get my hands on a WebOS device, this could be the second coming of Palm... here's hoping they live up to the hype.
- Scape3d, on 01/14/2009, -5/+16This is a true revolution in the mobile space. The iPhone did it, now it's Palm's turn. I can't wait!
- Eric1285, on 01/14/2009, -0/+10I can't wait! Thank goodness Sprint is finally getting a good phone. I've never had any problems with the Sprint network...just with their crappy phones. Hopefully they won't require us to migrate to a Simply Everything plan.
- sockpuppets, on 01/14/2009, -1/+10The only thing I want to know isn't mentioned there. Is it available to SERO subscribers?
- stoopie, on 01/14/2009, -4/+13no microsd expansion slot = FAIL
- thephosphorbox, on 01/14/2009, -0/+8"While we were told at a meeting with the company that the Pre would sport a microSD slot, apparently someone got their wires seriously crossed. The device won't have expandable storage -- which is kind of a disappointment."
They had me till then... that is a REALLY bonehead move considering that's one of the iPhones biggest flaws and every other Palm product supports some kind of removable storage. - mikek814, on 01/14/2009, -1/+9it will be nice to run an emulator to see what WebOS is all about
- kayvman78, on 01/14/2009, -1/+8Why is every new phone coming out labeled the "iPhone killer?" Can't new phones just be that, new phones?
- etruscan, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6My only problem with the Pre (at this time, because who knows - I may have more problems with it when I get a chance to play) is the keyboard. On a device that has an accelerometer built in so that you can view data in either orientation, it seems crazy to limit it to a portrait-oriented keyboard, which is why I love software keyboards (like the one on my iPhone). I don't want to have to turn the device around to type when I'm in landscape mode.
I think they have a lot of great stuff though, and I hope Apple is watching closely, because the iPhone 3G could use a few of those features. I love the ability to go to Airport Mode/Power Off from the power button. I also really like the web integration in contacts and calendar. Most of all, I like the multi-tasking ability, which is just not an option on the iPhone.
Still, I don't think it will replace my iPhone... but this is the first mobile device that's come along where I found myself coveting stuff it could do. That deserves a gold star. - mazurkfsflip8, on 01/13/2009, -4/+10webOS or android for me in 2009. i hope i can get either one of them on Verizon.
- magus_melchior, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6I spoke too soon. If you're willing to shell out $400, you can get an unlocked Pre, and Verizon should accept unlocked CDMA phones (which the Pre is).
- MacParrot, on 01/14/2009, -0/+5Well to be fair it was just a first look with a prototype so any statements on battery life could be taken with a grain of salt. I didn't see anything on storage amounts which was a little dissappointing.
All that in mind, this really looks like a great phone. I'm curious as to how well it plays different types of media and what kind of syncing it does for adding or deleting content. Hopefully it won't be Windows specific. Glad I've been holding out on getting an iPhone. Interesting times ahead! - Sonan, on 01/14/2009, -1/+6It looks a lot like my HTC Touch, but with all of the features I wish my Touch had. I'm practically sold, but still concerned about adopting a brand-spanking new OS with initially no community support. That's what I'm excited to see; what kind of third party apps people are able to write for it. I hope they release the SDK with an emulator well in advance of the phone.
- ThinkBox, on 01/14/2009, -2/+7No battery info or prices in this article
Not that they have released them yet, just saying, those are the two things I really wanted to know about it.
So this article is less "everything i wanted to know" and more "All the stuff I guessed or assumed, but nothing new"
Harumph - jonesje2, on 01/14/2009, -1/+6I'm getting one... no matter how much Ramen takes over my pantry!
- buckygrad, on 01/14/2009, -1/+6You know, you can just bury the story and "poof" it goes away.
- gage006, on 01/14/2009, -1/+6Everything you ever wanted to know...except for the price and release date.
- Harbinger67, on 01/14/2009, -1/+6400$ has always been the price point for the top-level iPods, and people eat that ***** up. 400 for an unlocked phone of this caliber isn't a bad deal.
- Asrrin29, on 01/14/2009, -1/+6I'm a pretty big fan of the WinMo scene just for the fact that is has a large development base, but this phone definitely has potential. They do need to make sure the SDK allows good access to the phone so developers can make some really innovative software (and games!) otherwise it might end up flopping. My fiancee uses a Palm Centro and while I love the form factor, the OS is definitely outdated.
- Omaplatypus, on 01/14/2009, -1/+5not an apple fanboy you say? what's with the apple avatar then? plus, you haven't even seen a pre yet so you can't draw conclusions either way.
- rwallen, on 01/14/2009, -1/+5This is the phone that will get me to ditch my iphone. Good timing too since my iphone contract is up in June :)
- anotherjpeg, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4From the sounds of it you won't need an emulator. The webOS SDK runs in a browser...atleast according to this article on The Boy Genius Report. http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/01/12/your-fir ...
- russ3, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4I agree, but is sprint a good carrier?
- anexanhume, on 01/14/2009, -1/+5It has a screaming chipset that no other phone on the market has right now. (TI OMAP 3430) Should be interesting to see what it can do.
- magus_melchior, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4The Palm guys are saying it'll be "competitively priced", which probably means it won't be on the level of a PS3 or Macbook Air at launch.
They're hoping for a launch in the first half of this year.
Amazing what you find out when you read the article. - rwallen, on 01/14/2009, -2/+6I got 2 of the $600 versions and its the best phone I've ever had. I'd buy it again if I had to do it over, and I'm not an apple fan.
I think this phone does right what apple won't fix. I can't run background apps (jailbroken can but not when the phone is in sleep mode IM's don't come through, so there is no point). No copy paste, no MMS, I don't like the virtual keyboard, and the ipod music player is awful and buggy. It constantly forgets its place and if I'm listenting to a long 30 hour audio book fastforwarding / rewinding either works in 30 second increments or 45 minute increments, making it a huge pain in the ass to find a lost spot.
From what I can see the pre fixes everything I hate about the iphone (i havent seen anything on the media player though). Also I can finally ditch itunes. - christinme, on 01/14/2009, -2/+6i can't wait to see this, though i don't know that i will give up my iphone, unless Palm gets a wide developer base and developers that support mac syncing and things of the such. I love my macbook and love the built in features that it comes with like the contacts and calendar. Both features i use extensively and I don't want to have a phone that i can't sync with my macbook and have all my 200 contacts instantly transfered over. One thing i don't see is a good audio player. The iphone connects to the most extensive audio market ever (itunes) and I can sync all my music (or most seeing as i have about 10gigs of audio) to my iphone without having any third party software or any hassles. The biggest thing that the iphone has over the pre is the wide usability with the mac software. The iphone is pretty much a carbon copy of the mac and i don't know if the pre can manage that.
- mikemil828, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4An Android killer maybe. With the Pre coming out, Android no longer has the universal adoration of the internet anymore, and it needs that support to have any hope against the Iphone and Blackberry. The Pre itself is much better off in this situation because it is better for business use than Android is (since it has Exchange Activesync).
- ChildeRoland420, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4It will have 8GB of storage built in. I thought I remember a MicroSD slot from Palm's own presentation, but this article is denying it.
- jam3p, on 01/14/2009, -0/+4This is great. I got an Instinct when it came out, and while I have not been disappointed with it, I'm definitely excited about upgrading to the Pre, regardless of cost.
- rwallen, on 01/14/2009, -1/+5No but neither is ATT
- shootsfired, on 01/14/2009, -2/+6400 isn't a bad price
- Aitese, on 01/14/2009, -2/+5It can...Apple just won't LET you. I would like to stream music from last.fm with the app in the background like the inbuilt music player...can't do it. I would like to switch between open apps without them having to reload from scratch...can't be done. Granted, being able to switch between the browser and the email app is only useful if you can cut and paste info from one to the other...and we ALL know about that one already.
- Aitese, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4Apple got grief because when you had no connection your app was useless. This is different in that the apps work offline as well.
- noahhoward, on 01/14/2009, -2/+5Can we start being serious here? Nothing is going to kill the iPhone, it was a game-changer and it is here to stay. Can you make something better, sure. But are you ever going to 'kill' it? No, just like the iPhone will never really kill the Blackberry (well not any time soon).
- nymbot, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4Is it open source? What's the battery life? What are the hurdles to getting an app to run on there?
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4Yah, all the popular techsite i.e. Slashdot, Engadget, Giz do that for every product and pretty much set up most of them for failure.
Nothing exceeds like excess (or hype) - jericko, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4From what people are saying over at the sprintuserforums, Sprint is going to make this like the Instinct, meaning they are going to try and get you on their everything package. Sucks for us SERO users.
- smoger, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3looks interesting. ill be sticking with android but competition is good for everyone and this looks like itll be another major player
- dragossh, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3It will be.
- deadsenator, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4Bad. After switching from Verizon to Sprint for a year, I vow never to return to Sprint. Bad CS, bad billing, trying to charge me $ to talk to a human. Ug. No thanks.
- mrBitch, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3RE: " I thought I remember a MicroSD slot from Palm's own presentation, but this article is denying it."
It's not JUST the article that's denying it, it was a PALM rep that actually made the mistake and have retracted their earlier statements RE expandable storage on the Pre :
"... we were told at a meeting with the company that the Pre would sport a microSD slot, apparently someone got their wires seriously crossed. The device won't have expandable storage -- which is kind of a disappointment." - clharlem149, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3okay, maybe you're not an apple fanboy, but you're clearly an iphone fanboy. from the limited information in this article, it is clear that palm gets it. they designed a new os to work well with a new touch interface, and seem to have put a lot of work into functionality, easy of use, and great aesthetics. it seems like they've hit every nail on the head (mostly), in a way that makes their product unique, but not so different that it's intimidating. this is nothing like the phones from those companies "that have rushed to create a touch screen phone." sure, palm is playing catch up, but they definitely took time to design this product from the bottom, up, and i think that warrants at least some slight interest, as opposed to the instant 'gimmick' label that you've thrown onto it.
- OMGIAMTHEMAN, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3their coverage is better than ATT for me in houston
- danwallace, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4It's ongoing coverage of revolutionary (sorta) technology. The Palm is the evolution of the revolution that started with the iPhone. People want to know about it and where it's heading. Suck it up.
- etruscan, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3True, but in the web browser, and in many third party apps, it will conform.
- mrBitch, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2RE games on the Pre :
"... the nature of the SDK (which will be available to anyone) means that things like 3D games will be hard (if not impossible) to pull off, which could be a big blow to a burgeoning developer community, considering how well games have done in the App Store." - mrBitch, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2If the Palm Pre is sold in a similar way as the Samsung Instinct (re the data plans), then no... it will not be available to SERO subscribers.
- mrBitch, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2Actually, the iPhone does multi-task. For example, you can play a music track from your play lists and browse the web at the same time.
I think what is confusing people RE the iPhone's abilities is that multi-tasking is NOT currently supported by the SDK, and hence 3rd party apps available on the App Store can't (currently) multi-task and stay resident.
This is something the next version of the iPhone SDK is meant to be addressing. -
