- tomaburque, on 01/09/2009, -3/+134I hope it delivers. We need alternatives to the iPhone and Blackberry.
- javin666, on 01/09/2009, -6/+123Check out the video, the user interface is amazing!

- MFoody, on 01/09/2009, -3/+51Since I've never actually used the pre I'm going to admit that I don't know how its feel compares to the iPhone. The looks seem comparable but again I've only seen a couple short videos. Where does your confidence on this issue come from? Your ass? I'm guessing your ass.
- codered1322, on 01/09/2009, -12/+58This is a horribly written article. WTF kind of sentence is this:
"After watching (and using) for 20 minutes, It rarely looked (or felt) unresponsive, choppy, or laggy and it's clear a lot of thought was put into the design, especially with regard to how the phone would be used with fingers, as opposed to a stylus or d-pad" - TheNik, on 01/09/2009, -4/+50Holy smokes, that looks impressive! I'm glad to see they've picked up that ball they dropped a few years ago.
- avivhadar, on 01/09/2009, -4/+49Everybody wanted Palm to bring the goods. They did.
- vondur, on 01/09/2009, -7/+45And it seems that the Phone is going to be much more expensive than the iPhone. Kind of weird to see Apple with the lower price product for once.
- BiIlyMays, on 01/09/2009, -3/+39At first I read this as a preview before their actual preview, a pre-pre-view
- Senturion, on 01/09/2009, -0/+29Looks pretty good but my real hope is that the increased competition will force Apple to step up their game, they have really been slacking lately.
As much as people like to use theses fanboy wars as an excuse to say "X pwns Y", I think having more competition is always a good thing, even if the company you support may be falling a bit behind, it provides motivation to improve.
-The UI needs to be redone to account for the fact that people now have dozens of apps on their iPhone.
-Copy and paste is a must.
-Some form of integrated messaging that includes text, IM, Twitter, MMS, etc.
-A solution for the ridiculously crash-prone Mobile Safari.
-Integrated, system-wide search (like Spotlight)
-the long-awaited push notification system or the ability to run background apps.
-a better camera with video, autofocus and flash
-more RAM and a faster processor to make the iPhone more responsive
-higher capacity, say 32gb
-Stereo Bluetooth with the ability to pair with keyboards, etc. - fireangl2041, on 01/09/2009, -5/+30Yea, except that Sprint users have had to sit and watch all the worthwhile phones be released on other carriers for years. Stop being so sore about it, people.
- infinitality, on 01/09/2009, -1/+25Yep. You never go full retard.
- skintigh, on 01/09/2009, -3/+25I hope this lives up to the hype. It looks like it could be like an iPhone, but one you can change the battery on without losing your phone for weeks and paying tons of money to Apple, and one that has a real keyboard, and a better touch screen, and is less crippled or maybe even non-crippled when it comes to app development.
Basically, it could be an iPhone without all the baggage and crippling of being an Apple product. That would rule!
Edit: also, since it's not Apple, I bet it will come with an SD slot or some way to add memory, rather than with the iPhone where you have to pay an extra $100 for an extra $4 worth of memory and then you are stuck with the choice for the life of the phone. - peaceninja, on 01/09/2009, -2/+24Thank you Apple, for forcing competition in the stagnant PDA/phone market.
- AlexDenne, on 01/09/2009, -0/+21This is a harsh (but fair) comment.
- jhails, on 01/09/2009, -0/+20Good for Palm. The competition will keep everyone on their toes especially Apple which is coasting on its iPhone reputation.
- DataPath, on 01/09/2009, -1/+20In the ArsTechnica review, they noted that the look and feel was a bit like iPhone, but they felt it was superior. Not only that, they found themselves wondering "now why didn't Apple do that?" quite a lot.
- chesterjosiah, on 01/09/2009, -2/+19We need alternative *devices*. Android is not a device.
- u8myfoood, on 01/09/2009, -4/+21Sprint has less spotty and cheaper 3G plans than ATT, T-Mobile or Verizon [just cheaper, both uses EVDO rev. A]!
Sprint's EVDO rev. A technically counts more as 3.5G btw and was the first provider to have it in the US!
Att:$30
Verizon:$30
T-Mobile:$25
Sprint:$15 - eViL2, on 01/09/2009, -0/+17I love me some competition.
- twoboyzzmommy, on 01/09/2009, -0/+15Time to trade in/brick my old Treo!!
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -1/+16Sophia looks cute, I'm gonna call her now.
- h2d2, on 01/09/2009, -0/+15Sometimes.
But I am OK with that while paying $30 for 500 minutes and unlimited 3G and text messaging. - plague, on 01/09/2009, -2/+16It seems like you're giving Apple enough fellatio already.
- slaverynin, on 01/09/2009, -57/+70the iPhone still has the looks and feel above all others so far imo.
- Icecold54, on 01/09/2009, -1/+14^^^
An opinion without even trying the Pre...
and if you read the ArsTechnica review that was mentioned above, it states that the Pre was superior.
"my iPhone suddenly felt old and played out. It's like Palm started with the iPhone, copied all the best ideas, and then made the whole package better. "
http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20090108-palm ... - SheVibe, on 01/09/2009, -0/+12and iPhone AT&T is what? hehe
Sprint EVDO is the fastest, and they are releasing wimax soon, boner tastic.
I have an iPhone but this Palm puts it to shame. I was looking at the iPhone UI and watching that vid and the iPhone actually look dated.
These are great times people! - wrestlingnrj, on 01/09/2009, -0/+12Finally, an upgrade to my Treo I actually want.
- h4mx0r, on 01/09/2009, -3/+15@Goyney
Guess, what, I'm on the SERO plan bitch, and I'm sure it's better than whatever plan you're on. - wakkow, on 01/09/2009, -1/+13Hm sounds like every other electronics company nowadays.
- bigsteve, on 01/09/2009, -0/+12Peter Kafka on the Pre: (per daringfireball.net)
The biggest unknown is price, which went unmentioned during the demo. My assumption is that Palm would try to take market share by coming in significantly lower than the $200 or so Apple wants for its iPhone. But when I ran that theory by Palm CEO Ed Colligan, he looked at me like I’d peed on his rug. “Why would we do that when we have a significantly better product,” he asked, then walked away.
Translation: Bargain hunters are going to be disappointed.
If they’re going to charge a higher price than the iPhone’s, users are going to expect a better phone than the iPhone. - Dralite, on 01/09/2009, -0/+12Release date?
- skintigh, on 01/09/2009, -0/+11Ooooh, and you can cut and paste and send MMS messages!
- franklymister, on 01/09/2009, -0/+11I'm glad to see Palm seemed to spend a lot of time actually watching how users interact with their phone in real life, such as creating a gesture bar for easier one-handed usage, looking at how people hold their phone when texting, etc.
It sounds like they've focused more on the actual experience of using a device, and not just thrown a bunch of features in to fill up a checklist.
I don't mind the lack of video camera, I haven't missed it on the iPhone, and I'm sure Palm has a good reason for leaving it out for now. A bigger screen would be nice, and I'm skeptical about the stability if they're allowing multiple third-party apps to run in the background, but I'm impressed with what they've done. - johnnysaucepn, on 01/09/2009, -1/+11And then deal with the backlash of people complaining about scratched screens and bricked handsets.
Apple's method works because of the huge media frenzy based on their past innovative designs. Palm hasn't got that bank of goodwill to rely on, they have to build the buzz through displays like this. - JlmAWP, on 01/09/2009, -0/+10The interface that pops up when your press and hold is fantastic, and the fast-switching between programs reveals a big disadvantage for the iPhone. Only being able to open one program at a time, and having to CLOSE that program first on the iPhone already seems like a hassle to me, and I've had one since release day 1.5 years ago. First half of the video is nothing special, but developers need to pay attention to what they did here. Truly a pioneer move there, even though it's really a fancy right-click..
- JonLatane, on 01/09/2009, -0/+10Yeah, I know, paying $30/mo. for 550 anytime minutes (unlimited nights and weekends starting at 7pm), unlimited text messaging, and unlimited EVDO sure is retarded. (I got SERO as well.)
Sprint's customer service is horrible (unless you go to a Sprint Store), yes, but their actual phone service is the best, hands-down, and their EVDO is faster and more broadly available than anyone else's 3G solutions. - alpha19, on 01/09/2009, -1/+10Cheaper, sure. Less spotty? That is completely an opinion.
- picturestorm, on 01/09/2009, -0/+9Crackberry have this awesome hands on video of it
http://crackberry.com/ces-2009-hands-demo-new-palm ...
Its the best Ive seen so far and Ive watched hours of Pre videos in the last 24hrs - esperoboy, on 01/09/2009, -6/+15Not to be a bitch... but it's for Sprint tho : /
- Donz0r, on 01/09/2009, -2/+10You give us apple fanboys a bad rep.
also, apple showed off the iPhone six months before it was available, exactly the same way palm is doing. - zephc, on 01/09/2009, -1/+9The iPhone originally only had "web/html-based" apps and that went over like a fart in church - as much whiz-bang layout as you can do in HTML/CSS/Javascript, you are going to have a lot of lost ability without a programming framework that can tap into the native graphics APIs
- EtherGnat, on 01/09/2009, -1/+8slaverynin: "I don't want an iPod classic in my pocket anymore i'm used to thin and sleek devices."
iPod Classic dimensions:
4.1 x 2.4 x 0.41 inches (H x W x D), weighs 4.9 ounces
iPhone dimensions:
4.5 x 2.4 x 0.48 inches (H x W x D), weighs 4.7 ounces
OMFG. The iPod classic is 0.07" thicker than the iPhone. Keep that brick away from me! Auuuuuuuuuugh! - serif69, on 01/09/2009, -9/+16I am the very proud owner of an iPhone, and I think it is truly one of the best pieces of technology I have ever used. That said, I am really quite interested to see webOS in the marketplace. As a web designer, the idea that I can easily develop a full-fledged app without needing to learn a new programming language is huge. The fact that I write my markup and do my testing on a Mac using Coda, with WebKit-based preview, means that I won't need to compile my code for testing on a device. The UI actually looks quite polished, unlike the BlackBerry Storm, and the hardware actually seems to be of high quality, unlike the G1. But to me, the biggest thing is that anyone who wrote a web app for the iPhone before the App Store debuted can more than likely just use the very same code to launch a webOS app. That means that there will be an awful lot of offerings right off the bat with next to no learning curve. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I think Palm actually made some decent decisions.
- inactive, on 01/09/2009, -1/+8***** you.
- alpha19, on 01/09/2009, -0/+7The early Palms made me want to stab my eyes out... just my opinion. :/
- bowe, on 01/09/2009, -1/+8just get the pre.. It has everything you listed besides the 32 gb.
- chris4404, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6I agree I'm really happy Palm appears to be coming back. I'm also glad this is coming to Sprint, just as we need competition in the handset market we also need it in the carrier market.
- someology, on 01/09/2009, -0/+6There is an SDK, so it will not be long before there are YouTube apps andother video apps for this. The old Palm OS had a large enthusiastic base of developers, and even a great deal of freeware. I'm sure the same will happen again.
- fireangl2041, on 01/09/2009, -1/+7This looks like its going to be a much better alternative to Window Mobile. Lets hope it lives up to expectations... I really need to get rid of my mogul.
