- hayden.evans, on 06/26/2009, -0/+8"A Quick Launch bar runs along the bottom of the screen, giving you fast access to frequently used functions such as e-mail, contacts, the calendar or any shortcut of your choosing. You can see your wallpaper on the Pre’s home screen, too; we have this small, albeit important, detail on our iPhone OS 4.0 wish list."
Umm am I the only one that noticed this.... iPhone has always had this... - mmijatov, on 06/26/2009, -0/+8Their print view doesn't have the entire article in one printable page. How lame is that?
- superkendall, on 06/26/2009, -1/+8To me the comparisons were too divergent - they almost never compared all four at once in any regard.
I do think it's smart to have split apart physical keyboard comparisons with virtual ones, but the virtual comparison should have included the Pre too since it can do a virtual keyboard in addition to the real one (at least I thought it could do that, perhaps I'm misremembering).
The only take I could really get out of this is that Symbian is in trouble, as in almost every way the iPhone and/or Android squeeze it out. - Ragarnok, on 06/26/2009, -2/+8So it's a battle between Iphone OS, Palm WebOS, Google Android and Symbian s60. Looking from the results it seems Symbian lost this one and Iphone and Android tied
- branton87, on 06/26/2009, -1/+7So many pages! D: Wouldn't a chart be better?
- serif69, on 06/26/2009, -1/+6In response to the complaints: http://www.pcworld.com/printable/article/id,166157 ...
- kent1146, on 06/26/2009, -1/+5But look at the bright side... in case you missed the Verizon Wireless ad on the right, you'll have ELEVEN opportunities to see it and save money!!!!! Surely, that is worth not having everything on one page.
/s - superkendall, on 06/26/2009, -1/+5I click feel click your click pain.
- markusfarkus, on 06/26/2009, -1/+4It's helpful for turn-by-turn directions. And it's possible that google streetview will be able to use it eventually.
- MxM111, on 06/26/2009, -0/+3I am an iPhone fan, but it does not make the article any better. It looks like random collection of facts with comparison between random features with randomly chosen 2 out of 4 phones.
- bloodhound01, on 06/26/2009, -1/+4because these comparisons are stupid as *****
- humbled, on 06/26/2009, -0/+311 pages. One paragraph per page. Buried.
- superkendall, on 06/26/2009, -1/+3I'd still carry a real compass as backup, but I prefer the digital compass as it's easier to read and gives you current GPS coordinates to look up on a topo map if you have one with you.
- MxM111, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2quick lunch bar, yes (I do not know why they called that very unique for Pre), but there is not wallpaper on the home screen, only on locked screen for iPhone
- heyimfromreddit, on 06/26/2009, -2/+4Well while there may be 11 pages, I also think that the...

(1 of 11 sentences) - insertAliasHere, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2WinMo has already been stacked up against all of these other OSs several times. WinMo just can't cut it compared to these. HTC does their best to make it nicer, but I'm keeping high hopes for the next version, because I'm not going back to WinMo until it stops sucking.
- humbled, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2Only one or two short paragraphs per page. Ridiculous.
- rawkensawken, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1i dont get why people never include winmo in theses comparisons
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1looks like the N97 is a total waste
- kyle212, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1This seems a bit bias, more then once he told us about the features one phone had over another and then called it a tie.
Hmm - ulcards2033, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1Really? People don't like texting in landscape?
- CCB0x45, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1It does help alot in cities for street directions cause it points you which way to walk.. I have gone around in circles with my 3g because I didnt know where I was in relation to where I was supposed to go in a new city.
- Hyperian, on 06/26/2009, -4/+5digital compass????? WHY? why is THAT being judged? What is the point of a digital compass? you have GPS with you. and dont tell me it's for hiking in the wild or some sh*t. get a real compass. and yes the article is biased. why not compare the camera?
- bloodhound01, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1Where the hell are the references to BLACKBERRY?
Everytime one of these stupid charts comes out that says "battle of smartphones" they leave out blackberry.
That just makes the entire chart worthless leaving out THE biggest contender in the smartphone market. - AdamFromMyspace, on 06/26/2009, -2/+3This is one of the most retarded comparison articles I have ever read. Two pages comparing aesthetics, one page comparing the digital compass (?), and no pages describing the image/video/music capabilities of each of the multimedia phones. I think this is the first article I've ever buried.
Maybe I'm just bitter because I'm a long-time S60 fan (3650, N70, N80, 5800XM). - LaughingMan11, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1Competition is good. I like Android a lot, but the fact is that Android and Palm's Pre WebOS have all been heavily influenced by the iPhone's success.
Case in point... screen geometries and touchscreen technology. Android's default screen geometry is HVGA (480 x 360) with capacitive touch technology. The Palm Pre is also HVGA with capacitive touch technology. Thanks to the iPhone, pretty much everyone this generation has standardized on that geometry, which also goes a long way to standardize the web experience on identical sized screens.
Speaking of web experience, every single one of the phones reviewed here uses a browser based on WebKit, the open source project at the heart of Safari, and originated at Apple.
I like Android a lot. When I use an Android phone, I can sense that it has common DNA with the iPhone in the web technology, and also in gestures like flicking and scrolling. There is A LOT of cross pollination between Google and Apple these days on their phone OSes... you have Google Maps as a system service on the iPhone, and WebKit as a core system component on the Android phone. Heck... even Google's CEO sits on Apple's board. Cross pollination is a good thing as well.
What you have to be careful of declaring victory for Android, though, is that # of different models and makes of phones doesn't matter. Sure, there will be 18 Android phones out next year, but will they be able to convince any of the 40 million iPhone users who are locked into contracts to switch? The market is of finite size, you know.
Windows Mobile had a very similar strategy. They licensed their OS, and at one point had hundreds of different handsets running Windows... but none of that mattered if one product (the iPhone) sold 10s of millions all by itself.
We all have our preferences out there, and i like Android, but it's a little to soon to declare that the iPhone has been killed. There are millions of them out there, remember... - xivera, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1No. However, the article is a total waste.
- xxvtcxx, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1a simple google search would show that it had a 528mhz ARM cpu... I'm pretty sure that these guys didn't even get their hands on a myTouch.
- beesaretasty, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1They sure do dominate that tiny Redmond based company.
- ptsuk, on 06/26/2009, -0/+140+ million phones doesn't equate to 40+million current users, just saying (co-worker has 3 original, 3g, 3gs, yes he's a glutton for punishment)
btw its not the "highest power" in regards to processor it barely beats the current android and is on par with the pre
apple 3g 400mhz
apple3gs 600mhz
android current 528 mhz
palm pre 600mhz
Don't recall saying that the iphone is down for the count. Did i? Sorry but the iphone has been and will sell to all the apple zealots but its reign is very much over. I work in an office of about 50 people, Since the release of android the number of android users to iphone users is now even with about 3 pre users and that includes the release of the new 3gs. Others have already stated that they are waiting to see what other phones are coming out for android this year (since there are 18 set to launch) and waiting to see if their carriers are going to have one (though 5 people switched to tmobile here recently)
As for the camera apple could have gone with a 5 mp which is what the next crop of phones are going to have as default and that would have made the 3gs that much more of a selling feature for new people rather than just getting people who already bought a iphone to just upgrade from a 2.0 to a 3.0 camera (without a flash or led flash even!) I had a mda with mobile 5 which was released 5+ years ago and it had a led flash!
Sorry but if you want to be a sheepy apple zealot fanboy more power to you and i'm sure you'll stay on that train.
so who's the moron now eh ;) awe me still? yah keep patting yourself on the back myfriend. - MxM111, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1What does it have then?
- beesaretasty, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1Wow. Another article that completely ignores not only the fact that Windows Mobile exists, but that it dominates the smartphone market.
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+111 ***** pages? WTF
- ptsuk, on 06/26/2009, -0/+1Actually I wasn't even thinking/saying androids victory was going to be determined by how many iphone users could be converted. Actually quite the opposite. I think those iphone users will remain Iphone users. I think iphone is going to loose out because of the "new" users going to be adopting android. As i stated in a rebuttal above i work in an office and all of the iphone users are either upgrading to the 3gs or not at all. Where as people who haven't had iphones (there actually have been two converts from original phone as they are out of contract) who had windows mobile or crackberries have been switching and the office is now even in iphones and android phones. Though there are 5 other people who are waiting to see what android phones are going to come out and on which carriers(they are hoping for their carriers)
I didn't say that the iphone was going by the way side, i just said that its set to loose the success they've had up until the release of the current crop of smart phones which prior there hasn't really been any competion and with their 3gs "update" they needed to do major upgrades beyond just bringing it up to the current crop of smart phones specs, because the next release of smart phones are already set to "out do" the iphone3gs.
but you are correct in the origins and "ode" to apple android/palm acknowldges, just like apple should to xerox, just like microsoft should to apple, etc. ;) - scheming, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1blackberry tour would like to throw its name into the hat. with blackberry os 5.0 around the corner and the tour being touted as one of the most powerful blackberry devices yet, it should definitely be in contention.
- CCB0x45, on 06/26/2009, -3/+3Your right... the iphone is clearly set to lose... with 40+ million iphones out there and selling out over a million of the units in one weekend alone. And with the highest power of any of the phones out there at least processor wise....
But you are right, because the MP is 3 and not 5, and the home screen isnt as "slick", its down for the count.
You are a complete moron. - cubicledrone, on 06/26/2009, -0/+0Anyone in this country got a job making phones? It's funny becuase there sure seem to be a hell of a ***** lot of them. I wonder how much better our economy would be if we could hire people to make phones? What would that be, about a million jobs? Because there's a ***** more than a million phones being sold every year.
What do those phones sell for again? $400? $500? How long do they take to assemble? A week? You could pay someone $10 an hour to make those phones and still make a large profit. Wouldn't it be nice if we could make the ***** we're being asked to buy over and over again? - raynar, on 06/26/2009, -2/+2and having it look like 1985. Enjoy.
- dton13, on 06/26/2009, -2/+2I stopped reading the article when it said
"the myTouch has a 900/2100MHz processor with 288MB of RAM"
That's major fail right there. - golgotha, on 06/26/2009, -1/+1Hardware specs are the most important thing here. Android has a faster development cycle, so if the iphone does something better via software, then it may not be long before Android addresses that via software.
So, hardware wise, which is the better phone? - ptsuk, on 06/26/2009, -7/+7Worthless article that completely favors the iphone (likely because the writer is biased iphone owner/user) and it never compares all them at once. Sorry but the iphone 3Gs only brings the iphone up to the level of the current smart phones out, The iphone was dragging and is now more or less equal to the current gen, however android is set to win as there are 18 other phones coming out from now since years end, with the htc hero going to be sporting a 5.0 mp camera, and a slicker interface(home screen) than the current gen of android, the iphone is clearly set to lose, not to mention the android market is exploding with apps similarly to when the iphone first got their store.
So apple is there an app to fix yer phone? ;) - LaughingMan11, on 06/26/2009, -1/+1When you step foot out of a subway station and have no idea which way is uptown or downtown or east or west, then a compass is very useful. GPS just tells you where you are, not which direction to go.
- fr34k5h0w, on 06/26/2009, -1/+1You're misremembering. Sadly. I'd love to have a horizontal keyboard on the Pre for the browser. Ah well, just a minor inconvenience on an otherwise great phone.
- superkendall, on 06/26/2009, -1/+1The old 3G has that as well (with the 3.0 update). It just added support for the horizontal keyboard to more apps... I think just about any app should support it if possible (some may not).
- yehaww, on 06/26/2009, -3/+3Why does Blackberry never get any love? I really like the Storm. Maybe not better than the Iphone, but it should certainly be in any discussion of "Hot Smartphones" don't you think?
- zjbird, on 06/26/2009, -10/+10iPhone won. Stop trying to pretend it didn't.
- USCAlum, on 06/26/2009, -2/+1I am glad now that in the new iphone you are able to text sideways. I might actually go buy one now. I couldn't stand texting on the narrow keyboard when friends and family had that regular 3g iphone.
- TheGreat0ne, on 06/26/2009, -2/+1Well if it turns out that the Pre doesn't have a virtual keyboard, you can always write one yourself without paying for a developers license :)
