- deslock, on 06/24/2009, -2/+41Finally, the beauty of background apps. iphone needs to stop playing the "you don't need it" game.
IMO, this is the best of what I liked about the Pre. Integrated apps. - casbar, on 06/24/2009, -0/+32I love my Android OS.
- hawksfan03, on 06/24/2009, -0/+29please come to verizon
- darkened, on 06/24/2009, -7/+34I wish it had a physical keyboard :(
- DoubleUA, on 06/24/2009, -0/+20Just got the Magic but will get the Hero (4 the 3,5mm jack) once it's available. The OS on the Magic is soooo much better then Symbian or Windows Mobile. It’s blistering fast, pity that the apps (Market Place) are slowly developing but surely the pace will pick up once there are 20 or more phones running on Android. Way to go HTC, your Hero will go ballistic!
- ThantiK, on 06/24/2009, -2/+19The entire android stack is opensource.
- purezero, on 06/24/2009, -0/+17It's been leaked as a custom build that you can flash to your G1 for a while now: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f ...
- Ellipsys, on 06/24/2009, -0/+13The hardware has very little to do with the Android OS. HTC has for some reason avoided a headphone jack for ages - it is their decision. Android I'm sure is all too happy to use a standard headphone jack if one is available.
- munikho, on 06/24/2009, -1/+13I had to actually go and check if that was true, and it is!!
weird. - deff, on 06/24/2009, -0/+12Ditto. I canceled my iPhone and haven't looked back.
- etx313, on 06/24/2009, -0/+11Yes you do, and it's extremely annoying. I would have pandora running in the car or on the bus and would have to stop it to send a text message. Not cool.
- munikho, on 06/24/2009, -0/+11Maybe a stupid question, but does anybody know if the new interface is also opensource?
- rnickel, on 06/24/2009, -0/+11The BlackBerry has been rocking background apps for a looooong time now, and everyone uses it. I'm not too sure why Apple thinks that it's not something extremely useful.
- sdipaola, on 06/24/2009, -0/+11android is software. headphone jack is hardware.
- dsn0wman, on 06/24/2009, -0/+9Because many people prefer things not made by apple. Especially people who enjoy open source software.
- SRfR, on 06/24/2009, -2/+11So why is T-mobile "delaying" the launch of the htc magic with no 3.5mm audio jack if the htc Hero has one, Why doesn't T-mobile trash the magic deal and go with a hero? :)
- PacoLugi, on 06/24/2009, -0/+9How do you listen to Pandora with an iPhone? Do you have to stop it to check your email? If so, then the iPhone is lame.
- andymadigan, on 06/24/2009, -0/+9Not if the application is actually doing something in the background. Or, if, say, I'm running an SSH client and quickly switch to check something on a page. If the client closes the connection is lost. Plus, push notifications are a lot more complicated than just having a real AIM client.
There are plenty of reasons to have true multi-tasking. - Juni7069, on 06/24/2009, -2/+10It wont. But the new HTC touch pro 2 is coming to verizon. It doesent run android but its going to be a awesome phone.
- RPGmaster, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7How long is it going to take before someone finally brings an Android running cell phone to AT&T :(
- twon, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7The OS is gorgeous now. I hope the processor on it can handle all that eye candy. I'd trade up my G1 for this!
- evil-doer, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7theres android phones coming this year that will have a keyboard including one from motorola.
- Theli, on 06/24/2009, -1/+8Closing uTorrent every time you want to read an E-mail is the EXACT SAME THING as Alt-Tab.
Seriously, Microsoft should never have bothered with this whole running-more-than-one-application-at-the-time thing. It clearly never caught on. - bigbadboston, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7super simplified discussion about Stacks: An entire OS (pc or phone) is built out of layers, the bottom layer in the stack talks directly to the chips inside the phone (it's all beeps and bites, signals and numbers), the next stack up does some management of higher level tasks (this is where things such as "making a phone call", "playing an MP3 file" happen, and then the top stack is what the user sees: Windows, Applications, Buttons, Actions.
AFAIK, the actual UI we've seen on the Hero is HTC's "Sense(tm)" interface (the top of the stack). This is something that is not included in the default Android OS package (HTC replaced Android's top layer with their own). Depending on the subtleties of licensing, that part may not be open source at all.
A branch is something entirely different, it refers to variations of a single software product. So yes, the operating system inside this phone is a "branch" of the Android operating system, precisely because it's a variation on their main product (called the "trunk"!).
*I apologize in advance to all the people reading this comment whose level of precision does not match mine. - muty, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7The HTC interface is not opensource. I've tried the Hero build on my G1 and I can tell you that for sure.
- RumpleForeskin3, on 06/24/2009, -1/+7Seriously, lose the zero and get with the Hero!!
- RogerStrong, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6I wouldn't count on much of the HTC interface being open source. A lot of it - the weather, calendar, etc - is the same as on HTC's Windows Mobile phones.
- Phocion55, on 06/24/2009, -0/+6Please, too much information in one comment. You'll confuse him.
- Stra10, on 06/24/2009, -1/+7It's sweet! But whats with the chin curve?
Here is demo of it running flash http://digg.com/d1uj6q - keithwired, on 06/24/2009, -2/+8wow ***** that *****, how the hell did that happen? Who is paying who now and how far up does the corruption run.
That's not accidental in any way shape or form, this was deliberate. - CaliLove310, on 06/24/2009, -1/+7Maybe there is going to be a HTC Hero Pro, with Qwerty Keyboard
- Elranzer, on 06/24/2009, -0/+5You're really going to love AT&T then. More expensive than Verizon and worse coverage.
Or maybe Sprint, where if you activate a new phone that you purchased separately or second-hand, it automatically starts your two-year contract over at that point (no matter if you're 2 months or 23 months into it). - MarkusDee, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5that is a good law.
- 7aji, on 06/25/2009, -0/+5Because a good smart phone with a good camera and OS is always appreciated.
- allyant, on 06/24/2009, -1/+6Dam, I wish I had as much money as you.
- praisethelard, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4Yeah, but it'd be hard to install your own headphone jack, I'd think.
- spritom, on 06/24/2009, -3/+7In the video at 2:00 it's going through music that's on the phone...then at 2:08 under "Purchased" is says "No Music Found"
- Gizza, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4You Americans and your ***** phone plans. Here in Australia it's illegal for a phone to be tied to one provider.
- hawksfan03, on 06/25/2009, -0/+4terrible service? where do you live? i live in iowa and get service everywhere. I can't imagine verizon caring about a state less than they care about iowa.
- jjustin01, on 06/24/2009, -1/+5Nothing better than streaming audio from Pandora or Slacker and getting a text message. Now, the next time I unlock my phone to change stations on the radio, it will automatically close Pandora/Slacker and take me to the text message.
Or, maybe the text message happens to be important enough for to actually to ASAP. I still have to close my audio app and interrupt the stream just so I can respond.
Oh, I know. Any native iPhone app can run in the background (it's Apple and only they know what's good for their hardware). Why not use the iPod function? Because maybe I'm sick of my own ***** music and would like a little change every once in a while.
For ***** sake! If Windows Mobile can get this one right, I would expect Apple to get it right. - Jektal, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4@LimeParrot, think applications piled one ontop another.
- BlackBsd, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3We already have android running on an AT&T Tilt. Its not official, but its community driven and it works. Gotta Love the Open Source Community...
- MtheoryX, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Who's digging this down?
That's exactly what they did with the HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro. - NoNamesLeft, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Just bought a Magic last week (Vodafone) and this UI update makes mine look old. As you can imagine, I'm not very happy. Apparently they will make it available to 'some' of the existing hardware, so I just pray they make it available for the Magic
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/news.phtml/25053/h ... - 7aji, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Funny when you think about the first S60 phones being able to do that years and years ago. Even though some of them aren't really considered "smart" phones.
- 7aji, on 06/25/2009, -0/+3Good catch there. It's a bit odd to have that in the video. :\
- Dested, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Sooooo no one else noticed the multi touch zoom on the browser, aye?
If there is a god there will be a real keyboard under there somewhere. - petard, on 06/24/2009, -0/+3Go to XDA-developers and get it for your G1 and save your money. It is 99% the exact same hardware.
