- joejonson, on 12/10/2008, -0/+31This is actually awesome. I would love to have a portable router. I'd put it in my car, and everyone on the highway driving next to me can check their email.
- inactive, on 12/10/2008, -1/+24Ummm I think my 3g is slow enough with just me using it... I could not even imagine how craptastic this must be with multiple people using the internet. Cool idea but I think in reality it will be a pretty salty wang tartlet.
- jggube, on 12/10/2008, -0/+22I'm a sucker for looks and portability, so this automatically grabbed my attention. But reading into it, for such a small device, it has a lot of nifty features, including one that really sold me: VPN support!
- mark076h, on 12/10/2008, -2/+9and watch porn, that's what i would do..........
- lovek, on 12/10/2008, -0/+6Not that I care because I'm a rebel and don't let the man tell me what to do... but I was looking into something similar to this and it seems it technically violates the ToS of most wireless services. Apparently they have the right to shut you down if they find you're using one of these to share your data access with devices other than the phone(s) on your plan.
Correct me if I'm wrong
But, ya know, like I said... I'm dangerous. So whatever. - akula89, on 12/10/2008, -0/+6..or just use a GPS :)
- Icyfenix, on 12/10/2008, -0/+5Dugg for salty wang tarlet.
- lovemorgul, on 12/10/2008, -0/+5It is easy to install on a 3g nokia phone like the N95-3 and it your laptop or any wifi enabled device
- ncc74656m, on 12/10/2008, -0/+5I had originally proposed to someone... somewhere... doing something like that, just using built in aircards as gateways and creating a peer-to-peer wireless network.
- crunchyeyeball, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3Was your last spam account banned? Hopefully this account will be banned quickly too. That is pretty low even for a spammer - copying someone else's comment (joejonson's) to appear human before pasting your spam URL.
- nbcaffeine, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3Sad that jailbreaking and getting pdanet isn't so easy that a brain dead facerolling monkey could do it.
Oh it is, and you totally should. It's bitchin. - andrew522, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3The idea is to use it for things like road trips. My laptop doesn't have 3G, but it sure as hell has wifi, so I would look into a device like this. Sad I didn't get netshare for my iPhone before they took it out because it acts in a very similar manner.
- divinediva, on 12/10/2008, -1/+4It's great.
- Dre_the_Geek, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3Things to keep in mind for tethering:
1. It is an additional cost (usually between $15 and $45 per month) in the USA.
2. It can be used without the plan, but once they catch on... Well nothing like being hit with the price of the plan if you are lucky and crazy data usage charges if you aren't.
Things to keep in mind for Cell based internet surfing:
1. As said above, 3G is not always true 3G (just ask iPhone 3G users who didn't check for their city before purchase). I moved from KC, MO and was getting 1.4Mb down, 512Kb up under Rev. A but when I moved to Jacksonville, FL it dropped to 450Kb down and 375Kb up because this area only has Rev. 0
2. The data plan for EVDO/HDPS from all carriers is $60 per month for a max of 5GB down per month.
In response to the Windows Mobile guys, enjoying that; at best; 5 hours of device life? I know 12 guys from work who are using various Windows Mobile phones and none of them get over 6 hours with the screen turned off (sad really). I will stick with my Blackberry and the 2 days of battery life thank you very much. - Ratteler, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2Too bad we let the Telco's get away with Bandwidth caps for 3G service. You would need a new account for every day you used this thing with >2GB per month limits on most plans.
They need 3G provider that can provide an "all you can eat" account. - Nouman6, on 12/10/2008, -1/+3in the car + turn by turn google streetview would just be awesome.
- Enjoikr3w, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2RAIDER!
- maliath, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2What's amazing to me is how behind the really large cities seem to be. I live in Lubbock now and they revamped the whole city with 3G and it is damn fast. But when I return home to Houston or Austin, I'm constantly switching between 3G and edge networks. And even the 3G there is annoyingly slow.
- kodax, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2If you are using a Nokia phone, your symbian software already allows you to do this using Joiku Spot which is free.
- newdigger, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2Your not getting 2.5MB down. Sorry. Did you mean Mb?
- Lovecore, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2I tether on my phone now, getting CDMA 3G speeds. When i last check my bandwidth usage, i was getting about 2.5MB/D and like 800KB/U, so, for all those out there that are saying they're 3G is slow as it is, may want to look into a different network. Even though most people, simple assume that since it says 3G its going to me super fast, which is not always the case. Certain area's are 3G compatible, while others are boarder line or not in service at all. But since it says 3G, they think its ALWAYS going to be 3G speeds.
At any rate, I think its a great design with great features. But the one killer on it will be its price point. I think that $200.00, is a bit much, seeing as the average consumer wont really want to spend that much on it. But if you break it down, its a worthy investment IF you tether your phone now. $15 a month for tethering for 12 months, is $180 so if your phone is WiFi capable, its a decent investment, in the long run. - r3bol, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2If you have a fairly modern mobile phone (3G), you can probably do this already...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tethering - MrDoug, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1That could be the first time I've seen a fresh idea in a cool package in a LONG time.
Yeah, I know....I can do it with a combination of other devices, but I don't always travel with those things. I like things that are simple, have 1-2 buttons, and do one thing really well.
Bravo...I want one! - inactive, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Mmmmm......tartlets.......
- Darthyoshiboy, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1I am a devoted fan of WMWifiRouter, but it has it's shortcomings, predominantly that the connection is an adhoc connection. Not all devices work with adhoc.
The MiFi would be awesome for some on the go Nintendo DS Wi-Fi connect gaming, assuming that it works as an actual router and establishes a real Wi-Fi connection, not an adhoc one. - umbrellainabin, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Old.
had it in the UK for ages - bigfatphony19, on 12/10/2008, -1/+2This is badass. This new idea of internet everywhere is really exciting, and really scary for my life. I am addicted to Digg enough as it is.
- Zephyriah, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Texas Tech student eh? just graduated there and I went to school for 5 years with verizon.. sucks ass in lubbock soooo bad
- sHockz, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1psh, my Sprint Mogul can already do this without any added extra devices. You run a program called WmWifiRouter, turn on your phones wifi on, and bam, I get faster internet for multiple users than all you ATT and Verizon users :P
So hah. Take that - apickle, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1I've got the pre-Mogul, the Apache. I do the same. Wooo!
- kodax, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Three words: Joiku spot. Free.
- Ziggy7273, on 12/11/2008, -0/+1Was it the bang bus?
- JustinPM, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Well you see 3G is not a big truck. It's a series of tubes. And when someone tries to send something to your own personal internet, those tubes can get clogged up. So then it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.
- TresTriste, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Were they watching the Bang Bus?
- ultrafez, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Or, just look through the windscreen...
- JustinPM, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1You know, you might be able to use this and Skype for somewhat of a winning combination. Or hell, any other SIP or, ah ***** it. I want one of these. I was looking into AutoNet but this looks to kick the ***** out of that.
- JustinPM, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Yes, you're better than this, but slightly less better than Pocky. Compared to Pocky my friend, you are found lacking.
- apickle, on 12/10/2008, -0/+0Yawn.
My PPC-6700 can do this. If you're a Windows Mobile user... get WmWifiRouter. It can basically use anything to connect to anything, IE... you can connect to 3G, then connect your computer to the phone via USB, Bluetooth, or Wifi. It's pretty awesome. - eredeath, on 12/10/2008, -1/+1neat
