This was on CSI a while back. In that, the glass was actually an LED screen (no backlight) that went semi-opaque when the door was shut, which closed a circuit that powered the screen.
I think a current passes through the glass which causes the change in opacity... I remember reading about that somewhere. Don't take my word for it, though.
I would think it was cool if it was operated by a switch inside the stall. Being automatic, I wouldn't feel confidant enough that it will work to use it.
I've seen this before in another place. I believe there is some sort of gas between two plates of glass and when it becomes electrified (lock circuit closed) the gas turns translucent. It works as fast as turning on a light bulb.
I hate these weird trendy bathrooms in night clubs. I wish they just made them bigger and keep em simple to ease congestion. Also, unisex is never a good idea for a bathroom, I don't want to hear girls making "sounds" or see what they actually look like in the bright bathroom light.
An electrical current passes through the glass to make it transparent. In other words, it is "frosted glass" when it is in the "off" position. If the power goes out or their is a malfunction, it simply stays "frosted".
they did this on pimp my ride as well works kinda like an lcd with the current passing through the glass and exciting particles inside the glass changing the color
omg, there are 3 resturaunts in my town that have this tech in their bathrooms, this is so not cool or current or new, burried for being about 10 years too late.
Doesn't this technology seem ill suited for a bathroom? Are the aesthetics of a toilet that great that we need to see them at all times when they're not in use?
I went there back in 2001 and they had them. They are really cool. When you lock the door, the lock acts as the "interrupt" mechanism to trigger the glass frosting. Nicebar, too. They have (or had) a cool chandelier in there made of large quartz crystals and multicolored lights. Limited microbrews, tho.
Reminds me of that Tucker Max story where he is banging a girl in one of those over the toilet seat and would keep unlocking the doors for a few seconds every once in a while to give the bystanders a show.
I was there about two years ago, it's a strange feeling that you can see other people (a little bit) but I assumed they couldn't see me and went about going to the bathroom.
Singapore's LRT system uses the same thing too. When the trains pass apartment windows, the train windows fog up to keep people from looking into the flats. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGcOEhza8Y4
