Well, start a business of your own?!
CEO's make 200 times more because they gamble with hunderds of jobs, they get hired to earn large sums of money.
If a CEO can make like 100.000.000€ net profit per year, the shareholders wouldn't care if they payed the CEO 5.000.000€ bonus. Thats a bargain, compaired to the profit generated.
On the otherhand u have a worker, that creates 50 units per month at a profit of say 3000€ and he gets payed 1500€ net. - jboi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17I can't even affort a decent house or a decent car.
Welcome to the 98% of the world population of suckers. ^_^ - scottmoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15When did you write this comment... 10 years ago. Sam Walton who did drive around in his truck has long since died! 1992 to be exact. His (living) children all have Gulfstream Jets and Yachts. Not that I blame them. Everyone at Digg would like to welcome you to the 2000's!
- Shivetya, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12the only people in position to judge the pay of their CEO's are the ones who hired them.
Everyone else does not matter. Most of the tripe against the pay of some CEOs can be traced to jealously and selfishness. In this world there are people whom others think are more valuable and capable than the people around them.
Why don't people complain that sports stars are overpaid? I know many do. Why not actors? I know many do.
Look, life isn't fair and if it was I would sure hate to know what some people did to deserve their lot in life. Look toward yourself and quit attacking others simply on the money they make. I bet most who complain would not put in the hours that many of those CEOs do or had to do to EARN their position, - klepto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10"Even Bill Gates has managed to do something constructive with his wealth."
The richest people in the world don't worry too much about things like this, even the owner of Walmart drives around in a beat up truck - roostersheep, on 01/16/2009, -2/+7My yacht can walk right through the door!

- jmchez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Although these yachts do seem to be an incredibly ostentatious display of wealth, those saying that the owners should donate the money are making a very old and common mistake. In 1969, after Apollo 11 reached the moon, the NY times quoted Jesse Jackson decrying how much money was spent on the Apollo missions instead of helping the poor. He, obviously, forgot about the thousands of folks that earn ed their livings by working on the space program.
When Paul Allen or Larry Ellison, spend $200 million on a yacht and $20 million on maintenance, it's not like they take the cash and burn it so no one can use it. Their money pays, not only for the crew, but for the engineers, mechanics, construction workers, supply delivery folk, chefs, cleaning ladies and marina guards, to name a few. All of those people earn a living, pay their taxes and put their kids through college just like all of the thousands of folks who work at any fancy hotel anywhere.
Allen and Ellison can give to the poor if they want to, but the money they spend on their yachts is going to very many hard working folk. - wistar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are so many systems of a critical nature on any complex watercraft that maintence is almost non-stop and pricey. Although many of these boats may not be insured by a third-party insurer, meaning the owner self-insures, such hull insurance is very costly.
Also, fuel costs for these craft are mind numbing. - galaxy121, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Larry Ellison is a monster ..... LOL
- szelij, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The more important question is, can those yacths do the Sydney-Hobart?
- Egoist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I saw Giorgio Armani's yacht docked at Portovenere a month or two ago and it was far more spectacular than many of the ones they chose to show. Very sleek and sexy and painted black instead of the normal white. It's called the Mariu if you want to google it.

While on a cruise to Mexico, our ship anchored near Atessa, owned by Dennis Washington. Here's a photo:

You'll notice the lovely copter - much better than a dinghy for going ashore.
Washington, of Missoula, MT, is #93 on the Forbes list of richest Americans.
I don't object to his being wealthy. Hell, I want to be wealthy too! I don't fret he has a yacht. I am incredibly upset that it's flagged in the Cayman Islands.
I would assume Mr. Washington is more than willing to enjoy whatever benefits being a US citizen provides. Flagging his yacht and paying taxes on it in the United States would seem to be part of that bargain.
I suppose Mr. Washington is doing nothing illegal. Still, at his level of wealth, is it really necessary to save every single penny that might go to the common good?
I don't mean to pick on Mr. Washington alone, but he is quite the conspicuous target (as is Donal Trump's jet - "VP-BDJ", also registered in the Caymans). - LVsFINEST, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3LOL, the only way you could know that it has nothing to do with penis-envy is if you seen it. Did he show it to you, or did you sneed a peek?
- tarkam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From another source:
"On average, owners must spend a minimum of 10 percent of the purchase price every year to keep these yachts in good working condition and cover crew salaries. Therefore “Octopus” which cost Allen US$200 million requires a US$20 million annual budget."
Imagine what you could to with $20mill/year!
http://www.yachtcrew-cv.com/paulallen.htm - flintmich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not true. Warren Buffett puts all these people to shame on the wealth-o-meter and he lives in his childhood home ($30,000) and drives a $40,000 Cadillac. He's just got more self confidence and human character than these other rich people who need to indulge themselves to make up for the lack of same. Buffett is like your kindly old Grandfather who comes to your high school graduation and gives you a card and $5 and you appreciate it vs. the super rich uncle who never bothers to come and sends you $100 to buy your affection.
Celebs that do good with their money (Pitt, Jolie, Redford, Newman, David Gilmour, many many more etc.) become legends.

- zadadka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sadly (for those amongst you who think so), penis-envy has little to do with yachts.
In the early 'eighties, I worked the Mediterranean (Juan Les Pins, Antibes, Nice and San Remo) as deckcrew on Riva's, Hatteras' and Sunseeker 50-foot(+) yachts, and once on a beautiful 85-foot Swan ketch, and in all my experiences, the owners were great folk...I even met David Niven.
There was little (if any) competitiveness, and the whole thing was about pride in the vessel and it's maintenance.
I was even lucky enough to see Errol Flynn's gorgeous Zaca in Villefranche before she as broken up...(she had already been de-masted at this stage)...now *that* was a gentleman's yacht...mahogoney and brass throughout...drool.

- LVsFINEST, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ok, I just looked it up. The house was $30,000 in 1958. Its still not small by any means.
- LVsFINEST, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not true. I live in LaVista, a suburb of Omaha, and I can assure you sir that the house Warren lives in is over $200K. Sure, thats not alot compared to his wealth, but is alot more than the $30,000 you stated.

- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Could anyone with some boating knowledge explain this?
"Allen's 414-foot Octopus, built by Germany's Lürssen, reportedly cost him upwards of $100 million. And don't forget annual running costs, which average at least 10% of the purchase price."
Dock rental, annual cleaning/storage/retrieval, fuel, wear and tear on the hull, staff. Would that make it $10 million a year in running costs in the case of this boat? Where does the extra cost come from?
Note: I am completely ignorant of this subject but have always thought of buying a boat and that 10% number kind of scared me off. Maybe it differs from yachts to sailboats but I'd like to hear people's experiences with running costs. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, if the sydney to hobart allowed engines, probably. the boats in that article are p&o cruisers for crissake! :)

- Khoji, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't want to rain on anybody's parade here but none of those vessels are yachts. At the very most they're motor yachts. Anything on the road with more than two wheels is a truck and anything in the water without sails is a barge.
