      Mitsubishi put together quite a spectacle to introduce its Laser TV last night at the Moon Nightclub at The Palms Hotel in Las Vegas, unveiling a 65-inch rear-projection set that uses a unique laser backlight. The result is some of the most vivid color we've ever seen on any TV, especially the primary colors of red, green and blue. The blacks were midnight-dark, too, and there was even a 3D version of the TV (goofy glasses required) that only made us slightly cross-eyed. Mits officials said to look for the TV to appear on the market "later this year" at an undisclosed price, and added that it will cost about the same as flat panel TVs of the same size. Then I heard that the promise of Laser TV's was overhyped by the Australian company that's going broke trying to push the impractical technology involved, and they weren't ever really going to work. Now one actually shows up.

      1. Contrast ratio
      2. Color saturation
      3. Color fidelity
      4. Resolution

      This is how the human eye sees light. Having primary red, green and blue points that are the most accurate on the CIE 1931 color chart equals more accurate reproductions rather than rendering of color. Lasers are pure, coherent light and they will not shift over time like a projector bulb will, they can be turned off when that primary color is not needed at all, their color is absolute and not determined by a spinning color wheel. there is no rainbow effect and (just like Texas Instruments is showing right now at their DLP booth with a "brandless" Samsung prototype) can be refreshed at 240Hz.

      This is a huge advance in video. Kudos to Mits.

Wait, given the number of half-naked women at their launch event, I'm guessing the quality is all in their marketing, not in their crummy products (and yes, I speak from experience in this case). To cap it off the company is more of an ethics wasteland than most. Caveat emptor.

There was a claim that these TV's would take a fraction of the cost to produce in comparison to Plasma's and be sold at least 50% of the what other flat panels go for. Now they are claiming that they will be selling at the same price point? Gotta love capitalism and what the market will bear...
