Minority Report-like interface gets demoed at CeBIT watch!
engadget.com — Needless to say, there's no indication as to where this particular bit of technology is headed next, but it seems safe to assume that it'll become a fixture of trade shows for years to come.

- rpgmaker, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1Microsoft Surface?
- supermanred, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2You mean Apple Multi-Touch in a table format? I love how Microsoft came out with "Surface" to compete with Apple's multi-touch and still managed to ***** it up by thinking we wanted a coffee table to compute on. Kind of hard when your coffee is on it.
- skinjester, on 03/14/2008, -0/+0The point of Surface is integration with real world objects (a drink, a phone, etc..) and exposing metadata or functionality of these objects using a common set of UI elements + visual language. Its also about sharing control of the interface in a social setting. iPhone is, well - an advanced phone. The form factor of the surface prototype was coffee table-like. That's hardly the only possible configuration. Multitouch UI wasn't invented by Apple btw

- patm1987, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6It appears to be using project looking glass (https://lg3d.dev.java.net/) by the really weird off-green glass they use as their widget frames. This would indicate that it's a platform that uses both Java and X. Most likely Linux, though possibly a BSD or something else.
- frogman54, on 03/12/2008, -0/+20Hopefully that thing will never be near a crime scene...the finger print guy might quit on sight.
- oldhick, on 03/12/2008, -1/+16Isn't that essentially just a large 'multi-touch' interface? Seems like Apple and Microsoft are both doing this already, granted on a select few small devices.
- RustyJ, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4yeah it reminds me of that "microsoft surface" coffee table multitouch thing, only standing up.
- omega6, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0Nah looks to be a bit different unless the images are just being projected onto the glass from behind. The surface uses projectors to get the image to the table.

- zephc, on 03/12/2008, -4/+2Interesting that really the only memorable part of that moving was a computer interface, and sort of the user-targeted hollo-ads. The rest of the movie was some vague mess about psychic twins and that assface Tom Cruise was in there somehow too. I know he used the cool computer interface.
- VinceNoir, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6Actually the thing that caught my interest in that "UI" scene wasn't the hand resizing windows (you'll remember he was wearing a glove an not touching the screen). The part that caught my interest was the movement of active data and applications from the main computer to the portable "tablet" devices. There are multiple ways to pull that off. I think the best approach is to find a way to make data and application functions portable in a "live" state.
Just imagine opening up some document on your computer, doing work on it (say a large video for editing), then placing a tablet in proximity to the machine and moving the data and application state to the tablet. You carry it with you on the tablet where you can do some more minimal work on it while on the bus let's say... Then when you get to your job (where you're video producer) you place the tablet near your workstation, and after the proper authentication, the data and application state is moved to your machine, ready to pick up where you left off at home + changes that occurred on the bus. Never needing to have the application actually installed on any of the machines at all...
You could arguable pull off the same thing by really having one central computer with all "desktops", "tablets" and the like being remote displays for the central computer. That's what I currently do with FreeNX server and Gnome. My live desktop follows me on any device at home or at work. It's just not as flexible as the above concept. (Can't wait to get PulseAudio with live audio resampling working so that sound over the net is a possibility)

- fcrow, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6Poor window cleaner..
- alanr19, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3Imagine the RSI you'd get from that. LOL. Too much dirt would pile up on them too. Especially public screens. ***** that. sounds like a good idea at first but like the monorail the more you think about it the ***** the idea gets.
Good hustle though. - garths, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4Touch interfaces are very different from non-touch interfaces. This is more in the category of Microsoft Surface and Apple iPhone than Minority Report. If you want to see an interesting non-touch interaction technique, check out what some of us at the University of British Columbia did with using shadows for interaction:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su4ZIqxaObo - zrcochran, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2Does anyone know how they project the image onto transparent glass?
- popfrogs, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1They had something projected like this at a car show once in the Lexus booth. It's nothing special, just a projector aimed at the glass at a specific angle.
- trollick, on 03/12/2008, -0/+7If only there was a device that would let me control the UI without waving my hands like a crazy man.
Oh wait... - sammydeath, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1does it come with giant screen cleaners?
- dsanonline, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1I'll take two. One to replace my PC and one to replace my television.
- aacidusX, on 03/12/2008, -1/+3wait, what? you have to touch the screen? that's like a baby's toy
- popfrogs, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2Plus one for the Futurama reference.
- Mortikhi, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3I want the blonde interface from The 6th Day
- mstoneburner, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1How many people honestly want to have to wave their arms around all day to get work done on their computer? Doesn't anyone realize how incredibly fatiguing that would be? You think carpal tunnel syndrome is bad, try working on one of these for a few weeks and enjoy your new rotator cuff.
- badsector, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1I agree, but I would actually like one for my house but just to control for example climate, cameras, lights, music, alarm system, etc. and of course a nice virtual face fading in and welcoming me when I come home.
- britblogger, on 03/12/2008, -1/+4not so good for amputees. ***** if they want to enlarge.
- mctwist16, on 03/12/2008, -2/+1but can it play crysis?
- IamZed, on 03/12/2008, -2/+3No one is ever going to interface with a machine by waving their arms in the air, no matter how cool its looks on film. In reality, it is rediculous.
- blindmonkey, on 03/12/2008, -1/+3I disagree. I think we're moving toward more natural interaction with our computers. So rather than going through the proxy of the mouse and keyboard, you point directly to the screen, and type/write what you want, move what you want, where you want. There's also less of a learning curve, and it works intuitively - think of the Wii. Besides, we could all use the exercise, and those that don't need the exercise wouldn't complain.
- popfrogs, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5Personally I think it's bluediculous.
- kneelB4zod, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2like OMG all those germs on the screen eeeeeew!
- RedSaber, on 03/12/2008, -4/+2That's called Microsoft Surface and it's been out there for quite a while already.
A few months back, they planned the corporate release of it for last quarter 2007 and for public in 2009... I don't know if they are in their schedule though.
If you like this video though, you guys should definitely check out the "Microsoft Surface" website, it's way cooler then this. You can upload picture from your camera to your computer just by putting your camera on the surface, etc. etc...
The future is now - sagat, on 03/12/2008, -0/+6Don't they already use this on CSI Miami? The only show where they expect the viewer to believe that Star Trek era tech is available and in use by crappy little police departments accross America.
- one1plus1one, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1Yup. They also use it at CSI-Wichita-Falls, and CSI-Fargo's been using it, along with molecular-level holographic models for years. This video is sooo old.
- rmeddy, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2Sweet ,now make a videogame with it.
- Swarms, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3So it's a big multi-touch screen? I'm more impressed with the "Click here for more info ->" link that they have perfectly lined up at the end of the video on the actual youtube page. I'm easily impressed.
- CaMason, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3A colleague and I have been working on a hands-free system the uses colored paper to manipulate elements on-screen. The advantage with our passive interface is that we can manipulate movements in a 3D space.
We'll be producing a demo of this tech soon. As soon as we do, I'll make sure it's posted on Digg ;) - Delphium226, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2My cat will love it.

- cwcentral, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1Just one more reason to create even larger McMansion houses so people can installed 100" LCDs and projection screens.
- readerz, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1That's nothing but a big ass ipod !
- blackwinged, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1hahaa I played around with this one.
I heard the boss yelling at the employees that they should sell their products and not just let the people play with the wall XD - dichotom, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1I will have to have one of those, but I will add on some kind of interface that I can more easily manipulate. Perhaps something I can use from a distance that can traverse the screen faster. Something that I don't have to move much, but it will cover a great distance on the display. Maybe it could have some buttons on it to emulate my fingers touching the screen. It could have a wheel on it too so I could rotate things with a finger movement. I dunno, sounds pretty innovative, I'm just throwing ideas out there. Hopefully technology will catch up with this idea I have. It could become so popular and mass produced that you could pick one up for five dollars. I would call it the... hmm... any suggestions? I might even use two of them for the multi-touch features if it were even necessary with such an ingenious screen-manipulating device!
- vvaduva, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1What is the point of this for home users? I don't want to stand in front of a wall waving my arms around. I want to sit on the couch, watch tv, have a laptop next to me and a brewsky on the other side. I can see it being used in specialized environments, like movie sets, but this aint gonna fly from a practical perspective.
- BobaFettTDG, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Those two women were totally acting out the movie.
