It all started in August when McDonald's Japan in association with Coca Cola announced a contest, where a MP3 player was awarded upon sending the unique number on the Coke glass as a text message. In all 10,000 winners were announced and each

I may have lost both my legs to diabetes, but I'm still sexy! - NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4OMFG, I gave that MP3 player to my friend as a gift. Except mine didn't have the Mickey D logo and it was blue. But it looked exactly the same.
Is this more of a generic mp3? - tinker123, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3http://www.tryveg.com
- zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Nerve
I noticed the same thing, my dad works for xerox and they just gave every employee an MP3 player (which I then got) and it looks exactly the same as this one, only there's a xerox logo instead of McDonald's.
- wisedude, on 10/12/2007, -27/+14HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN?????
- Ray_Justice, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19No kidding, how the hell does a huge company like McDonalds not have anyone check out these mp3 players before giving them away to 10,000 customers. And what kind of shady companies are they dealing with that would put this malware on the flash drives in the first place?
- Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -1/+126Well, it happens when you hit that key on the left-hand side of your keyboard that says "Caps Lock." If you push it again that should take care of it.
- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25Diggtatorship: That is one of the funniest replies ever!
- chembro84, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5We're all emotional over this story, but please try not to shout :)
- Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32This is what McDonalds gets for buying cheap mp3 players from China!
- webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Industrial espionage! The Chinese want to start a McDonalds competitor, and were hoping an employee would give them access to the corporate network.
I'm not sure what sort of information they'd be able to get though... to make addictive food load with sugar, fat and MSG. Couple with blanket marketing and advertising even in things that have nothing to do with unhealthy food (football, for example). It's not rocket science... unless that's what they were after... a NASA geek... - HeaDiggrNCharge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1HackDonalds anyone?

- modpancake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5But part of what makes Digg awesome. Digg this story... I'd love to see Kevin and Alex stumble on the description. Plus, it's a very interesting story anyway.
- Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Just another reason for to stay away from MCD's,Junk food and junk electronics.
- NewPunk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Very irresponsible of the company. They should run thorough quality assurance tests before giving consumers products. This could have been easily prevented if they had the proper processes in place. This isn't as bad as the Sony rootkit, but it's still amazing how large and resourceful companies can screw up something which seems so simple to the techno savvy people of the world.
- brownb2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Agreed - I wish I could digg this up more. I'm sick of the ***** QA so called responsible companies do for the numbers on their bottom line, obviously not customer satisfaction. Incidentally I tracked some of the Sony QA blunders they did earlier this/last year - heres what I found:
1. XCP Rootkit (Software on US music CDs)
2. XCP Patch (Flawed and left another security hole)
3. Connect Player 1.0 (Causes system slow down).
Notably the first 2 were by a UK company and the third was distibuted with some of Sony UK's based MP3 players.
Incidentally I avoid Sony products now, and I'm based in the UK. Sony used to be synomonymous with quality products once upon a time, it doesn't look that way to me anymore.

- jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Dude, I remember when they served pizza! That was freaking awesome! They stopped like 6 or 7 years ago though :(
- brindon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3McDonald's pizza ***** ruled. Nothing like getting a hot pizza at 4AM on a tuesday after studying all day/night. Spicy sauce too.
I remember reading about the $4,000 (or whatever) custom pizza ovens in a magazine once...I wonder what happened to them?
- ButtSpasm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I bet the person(s) who ultimately made the decision to put the malware on the mp3 player is/are laughing their ass(es) off.

- Jessehk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I may be oblivious, but are there any sources for this story besides this blog? Otherwise, it might as well be made up in my book.
- snapya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You have a good point....
- DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9If it had been made up, it wouldn't have made it to the front page of digg, because as we know, digg.com's front page only contains 100% accurate stories, thanks to its ultra-perfected truth-verification mechanism.

.. and just in time for Halloween! Muahahaha!
I'd really stay away from Mc'D's because their food really, REALLY is not healthy anymore. It's gotten worse over the past 5 years in many ways including the price [cheaper for them to buy/make, less healthy for you to eat]. Someday someone will do a study on the health effects 5, 10 years of moderately occasional eating of a value meal, in terms of health costs like diabedes, heart attack, stroke, obsesity, etc. If you people would stop buying their crap, they'd MAYBE start seeing the light and change some content problems, but ever since they had that "SPAT" with their BEEF/meat suppliers, their food just went DOWN THE TUBES health-wise! - misfit410, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lay off McDonalds food, jesus.. I don't care where you get your burger and fries but if you eat them every meal of everyday, you are going to be a fat f***....
You know people do have the option of pointing at a salad(MCD's has one kickass Caesar Salad that rivals anything you will find in most restaurants), or the fruit
and yogurt salad. Even a chicken breast wrap is lowfat.
You don't have to eat there if you don't want to, but lay off the place, Morgan Spurlock is a biased tard, and some of us, once in a while just want a nice greasy big mac... just not every damned day.- moonhead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Couldn't agree more. I'm sick and tired of people bagging places for selling un-healthy food. If i want to eat healthy food I'll go to a supermarket and buy a lettuce, if i want high fat/salt/sugar foods I'll go to McD's.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who the hell is going to jog with a McDonald's Soda Cup of an MP3 player attached to their body.
