- CaviMike, on 11/06/2009, -0/+11Almost every ***** pair of headphones has 24K gold plated plugs. Jesus, the one that came with my cel-phone is too.
- julianmaestas, on 11/06/2009, -1/+7v-moda's are ***** headphones. it's all about sennheisers, diggers.
also, the cords may be enforced with kevlar but it's pretty unusual for the cord to rip or snap anyway, it's usually something else that breaks. in my experiences it's been the extremities that wear out. - ChronicColonic, on 11/06/2009, -0/+6Neo: What are you trying to tell me? With these Kevlar-covered earphone cables, I can stop bullets?
Morpheus: No, Neo. I'm trying to tell you that when you're ready, you won't have to. - thetrev, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Kevlar-plated cables?
Because i'm planning to leave my earphones in the cutlery draw. - mrsteveman1, on 11/06/2009, -0/+5Well, yea partially, but good ones don't hurt or anything. They tend to have better bass response too :)
- Cyberdactyl, on 11/06/2009, -0/+3I imagine you look quite the audiophile running or biking with full headphones. . .
- RizzleQ, on 11/06/2009, -1/+4It's probably because earbuds are jammed INTO your ear.
- jeremiahjw, on 11/05/2009, -2/+5These look interesting, don't really like earbuds. I prefer the sound canceling headphones.
- jbmcb, on 11/06/2009, -0/+224k connector plating does help the connector last longer, as gold doesn't corrode, but it's nothing to brag about. Pretty much any halfway decent connector is going to have it as it costs almost nothing.
It's like bragging about having chromed plastic on your car. Sure it looks cool, but it's just chromed plastic, it's available on a base trim level Civic. - ReallyFunGuy, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2I misread: only the plugs are gold-plated, I was thinking the buds themselves were. This is very common on audio equipment. I can only think that the company digg spammed this to the front page.
- mrsteveman1, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2Every pair of earbuds i've owned have been better at isolating sound than the ones that try to cancel it out with microphones and such.
- votic, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2lol the title says it like it's uncommon.
- jeremiahjw, on 11/06/2009, -1/+3LOL, I said I don't really like them, not that I don't use them. :-P
- ReallyFunGuy, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Depends on how you abuse them. I have had a pair of AKG K240's for four years. I've used, and abused the hell out of them. I've had to replace the earpads twice (the cans include two pairs) and the cord once, but it was easy because they are replaceable. The non-replaceable components have held up like a tank.
I had a pair of sennheisers long ago, and the cord was extremely robust on its own (similar to console controller cords); no kevlar gimmick needed. - 1hrSleep, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Actually, it's almost always the cord to break first which is why I only buy headphones/IEMs with modular cables.
2 cables later -> Sleek SA6
1 cable and 5 years later -> Sennheiser HD497s
Recent purchase -> Sennheiser IE-8 - ratava911, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I have some kevlar studio monitors.. pretty ordinary now.
- bnyoung11, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1the old vibe's looked way better
- dkla, on 11/07/2009, -0/+1You obviously don't have any cats... mine chew through the wires all the time... :)
- ReallyFunGuy, on 11/06/2009, -2/+324k gold plated, eh? Pure gold is very soft, and this is sure to scratch and wear off very easily. Secondly, gold plating is low-rent. These buds have gimmicks as sales points, and doubtlessly perform poorly in comparison to the price point. Audiophiles don't buy this *****; they either get Shure buds, or cans from Sennheiser or AKG. You won't find gimmicks with these brands; only quality sound with easily replaced, durable components. Only the naive would buy this trash. Why is this on the front page?
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1gold plating is necessary, it hardly costs any metal since you're barely using in Au and it resists oxidation
- Sabin, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I stay away from Shures now. You are supposed to wear them with the cables looped behind your ears which in my case seems to cause the sheathing to become rigid and brittle. After going through 4 pairs in three years I am done with them.
- JessterKing, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1the Kevlar isn't exactly to prevent the cord from snapping, its to help keep the copper with in from being kinked or worn out or what ever happens to it. My head/ear phones always have to cord die first, i used to wrap my cords with electrical tape so that they wouldn't bend so much and they would last longer, now i get some Philups head phones that wrap behind your head, they have a fabric covering to the cord and a elastic strap at the top by the head phone so that if the cord gets pulled it doesn't yank your ear.
- kd1s, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1I've gone totally cordless. Headphone connectors suck! So I picked up a pair of bluetooth earphones and all is happy, happy, joy joy. If only Motorola were smart enough to build say a 20 second buffer into their bluetooth earphones.
- jbmcb, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1> it's all about sennheisers, diggers.
Grado is good, too. The cheaper Grados are better than the cheaper Sennheisers, IMHO, though the pricier Sennheisers are better than the more expensive Grados.
The thing about Sennheiser is the cords are crap, they always wear out after a couple years for me, and I don't travel with them or anything, I just use them at my desk. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD-414IIs from 30 years ago, and a pair of Grados from ten years ago, that just run and run. I have a newer pair of fancy Sennheisers from five years ago, and I'm on my third cable set for them. At least they are replaceable. - ampdj89, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Why won't they refine sound quality and reliability instead of throwing crap on it.
- CaviMike, on 11/06/2009, -2/+2Ummm, Shure headphones have 24K gold plated plugs too...
- jaaames, on 11/06/2009, -2/+1It's shocking that a better product tends to outperform an inferior one.
- inactive, on 11/06/2009, -5/+0The what?.
