- RAAFStupot, on 10/27/2009, -0/+25They are called 'Palantir' (not 'crystal ball'). As there were several of them, the correct plural form is 'Palantiri'.
Originally there were at least half a dozen, distributed at strategic places through Arnor & Gondor, such as Amon Sul, Orthanc, Minas Anor, Osgiliath, and Minas Ithil.

...and it was Saruman that had the crystal ball. </lotr nerd> - tryptonaut, on 10/27/2009, -0/+10Thanks for the informative reply, here's a Digg for you kind sir.
- soil, on 10/27/2009, -0/+8Hmm, no thanks, gandalism is already a big problem where I live.
- namslam, on 10/26/2009, -0/+7That's it. I'm buying one.
- dullnation, on 10/27/2009, -0/+5Who the hell makes an interactive multitouch sphere and then DOESN'T make a globe app???!!
- ExoBit, on 10/26/2009, -2/+7Bet they haven't had their hands on a ball that big since their morning stretch.
- halphprice, on 10/27/2009, -0/+4What the hell is a Gandal?
- ScientistBlah, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3Yeah that's cool and all, but wtf does it do other than just let you toss some coloured particles around?
- amiller011, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3Doesn't seem like a great interface for browsing the net, i like flat easy to read text sorry, not really useful, but the virtual playing with sparks is cool!
- raymon9, on 10/27/2009, -2/+5When will I be able to grope a giant interactive boob using this? </digger>
- shaelen, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2Silent f, subby?
- ScannerMobs, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2What the ***** is a Gandal?
- life036, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2Looks more novelty than anything. The resolution on that thing sucks, I wouldn't even use it to browse the web.

- JitMaster, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1They need to cut a hole in the bottom, so you can go inside and have 360 degree view and touch interface. Then let's play some games...
- cor315, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1Although I agree with the novelty thing your complaint about the resolution is just wrong? Have you not paid attention to the past 30 years of technological history? Resolution will always get better.

- Myztry, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1Normally I dismiss large screen touch interfaces as being hoola-hoops. Sure, both were common back in the 80's but both had their time with the gimmick factor. But really they were just awkward.
BUT this is cool. It like the two joined together. It's round, it's touch sensitive and it's new. It may even have some niche applications such as the control point for turrets on a war-marine. A variety of game game. Anywhere you may need several perspective where control needs to be handed to the left or right.
Most of all - it's just purty... - beejay54, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1I'm working on a similar project for a show this Thursday. It's basically infrared light that gets picked up by a modified web cam through a rear projected screen. Special open source software captures the light blobs and converts them to points that you can use in visualization software like flash. If you're looking to get into this it can be done pretty cheap and it's a lot of fun to produce different interfaces. Check out http://www.peauproductions.com . They're a good place to get started.
- Maysh, on 10/27/2009, -0/+0Do want.
