  • marciot, on 11/08/2009, -0/+10The RJ11 lamp must be causing the telephone company all kind of seizures right now. Cool idea though, you get light even during a power failure -- battery backup lighting courtesy of the telco and their otherwise useless landlines.

    Now I wonder if I can rig a 110V inverter to a RJ11 plug...

    Of course it uses electricity, and there goes your eco-friendliness argument, which was the big deal for you.

    Besides, using the supplied voltage from the telephone company is more eco-friendly than having a plug in wall transformer that has to convert power through a lossy transformer down to a usable voltage. Imagine thousands of people avoiding that step - could be enough to add up.

    I would think that the phrase, "No Electricity" should not be taken quite so literally...

I know that there are regulations to consider, but I've often wondered why that idle 48 volts isn't taken advantage of more. Today's phones don't directly draw off the phone line as they need an external power source to supply all the bell's & whistle's with the needed power.
