Or a really strong magnet ;-) - jboitnott, on 07/10/2009, -1/+19Yeah I know it probably won't happen but it certainly reminds me of my mom and the Credence Clearwater Revival she had on the 8-Track. CCR FTW!

*chuckles* Well, I'll be damned. Guess what Peggy? There's a place in Arlington that still makes eight-track tapes. - dafragsta, on 07/11/2009, -1/+11Pot, meet kettle. It cracks me up when a modern Pro Tools recording is pressed into vinyl. If you like the noise and crackle, that's fine, but the whole "warmth" thing is a myth. A high resolution recording has more usable fidelity than analog tape. While I do like the aged sound of tape, it's actually removing clarity, so if it sounds warmer to you because of that, fine, but it's not any difference in actual quality. If you want analog noise, that's achievable with plugins, but then someone would have the audacity to call it a gimmick.
It's kinda like when people realized the megapixel war was over when the quality of the pictures was limited by the quality of the lens. The sensor itself is a much truer representation in a usable sense than analog film, yet somehow people think analog has no granularity, when in fact it does. It's just diffused instead of hard edged, but once the scale exceeds the point that you can tell a difference, it's really splitting hairs to say the analog format is better.
Audio production has been changed greatly by convolution. The analog/digital war is for the audiophiles with too much time on their hands. - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+9At least you can get quality with LP's - modern 8-tracks are just ***** hipster gimmicks.
- Lucas123, on 07/11/2009, -1/+9I loved my 8-track player, auto reverse, one-touch moves you from track to track -- almost as good as CDs, but with worse sound.
- llamarama7, on 07/10/2009, -1/+9There are worse ways to spend your free time in the suburbs... but not many.
- mogebier, on 07/10/2009, -2/+10Oh yes, we need those again. *rollseyes*
- hckynck20, on 07/11/2009, -0/+7Why? 8-tracks were never ever made for sound quality they sound terrible, they were made to be portable, and im thinking the 8gb micro sd card in my phone does a much better job then an 8-track.
- 1ofMany, on 07/11/2009, -0/+7You had Auto reverse on an 8-Track????
I think you're mixing up your cassette deck with your 8 track on that feature. - strangerzero, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6Wax cylinders, records, wire recorders, reel-to-reel tape, 8-track tape, cassette tapes, DAT, I say good riddance! Give me an iPod or CD player any day. The only thing I miss about records is the big album covers. 8-track was so annoying changing tracks with a big cher-chunk right in the middle of the song. Some times they would change the order of the songs to make them fit better on the tape. I hated that.
- AndrewDB, on 07/11/2009, -1/+7How about a really strong magnetic fire?
- bdbr, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5For the youngsters: those "tracks" aren't songs. They're just breaks in the middle of everything. 8-tracks sucked so bad that we were happy to have cassettes.
- alwilson, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5"If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be travelling on, now,
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see.
But, if I stayed here with you, girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
'Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can't change. .........
.................................................
...................CLICK!!!..................
.................................................
...... Bye, bye, its been a sweet love.
Though this feeling I can't change.
But please don't take it badly,
'Cause Lord knows I'm to blame.
But, if I stayed here with you girl,
Things just couldn't be the same.
Cause I'm as free as a bird now,
And this bird you'll never change.
And this bird you can not change.
Lord knows, I can't change.
Lord help me, I can't change." - FortyCaliber, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3The biggest issue with 8-track was the tape stretching... barring sound quality... but when they came out... They were THE ONLY mobile audio.
- IllBeBack, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3YAY-AHHHHH!!!!
FIRE! FIRE!!!!! hehehehehehhehhehehehe
/Beavis - Yage2006, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3No I really think don't think they will not even in the slightest.
There is no possible advantages at all. Vinyl is hanging on though. - nesagwa, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4And thats why 8-track tapes shouldnt make a come back. They sound awful. At least with LPs you have a reason.
- keviniskool, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3While someone may have the audacity to call an analog noise plugin a gimmick, would this gimmick be available in Audacity?
- e1en0r, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3It's a cool collector's item, I suppose, but I think they should include a digital download with the purchase of it for those fans who want the novelty but also want to conveniently listen to the music.
- 1ofMany, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3The worst part of an 8-Track tape was when a song would be split across tracks. The song would fade out when you were just getting into it and then, "!!!CHA-UUNK!!!!" the heads would mechanically realign (deafeningly) just before your song would fade in from where it left off.
- hackiavelli, on 07/11/2009, -1/+4Just give it time. Hipsters and audiophiles will convince themselves that 8-tracks sound "warmer" or other such nonsense.
- beabis, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3I find them to to be much more organic than today's harsh sounding digital music. It has been said that digital music causes fatigue, increases blood pressure, and raises cortisol levels.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+3So they've fixed the problems of tape stretching, binding on the platter, the rubber drive wheel either glazing, getting sticky, or disintegrating into little pieces into the cassette or the deck, the foil splice wearing out or breaking, the piece of foam "weatherstripping" either disintegrating or losing its spring, no ability to rewind, ***** sound quality, and the fact that any thrift store selling 8-tracks has five copies of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack at any given time?
- ISFDB, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Ah, the 70's and 8-tracks. I remember the time well. Trying to pull dead cartridges from the car player, with the tape stringing into the player like entrails. Miles and miles of 8-track mag tape lining the roads, wrapped around stop signs, traffic lights, and billboards. I think that's why we came up with platform shoes, just so we could navigate through sidewalks paved with busted, unreeled, 8-track tape.
By all means, let's bring those good times back! - lordmike, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2Slim Whitman.. sold a million albums in England and is sweeeeeping America... only $11.95 when you call now... $9.95 eight-track or cassette....
- philb0t5000, on 07/11/2009, -1/+3The big album covers are why I am glad records are making a comeback. Most new records come with a digital download card so you get the .mp3's as well. With the records, artists can still focus on making sweet album artwork (not to mention give listeners who have record players better sound quality), and still release digital copies to put on your computer and .mp3 players by including a download card.
- pyrates, on 07/11/2009, -0/+2What a waste of time. Reading the deficiencies of 8 tracks makes me glad the format died. This is all about nostalgia. There is much better formats out there that are just as portable as 8 tracks. Get with the times. It died for a reason. Technically it is beaten by cd's and mp3's and even tapes.
- strangerzero, on 07/11/2009, -1/+3Not to mention that big cher-chunk sound right in the middle of the song when it changed tracks.
- robbiedo, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1I still have a Sony DAT. That thing must be close to 20 years old. I still have some recording sessions mastered down to it, but I have largely imported those to ProTools, I suspect. It's been a long time.
- dafragsta, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1There are probably others in the software side of things, but these are free. I have used both quite a few times, especially Ferox. It's subtle, yet it makes things sound more "round."
izotope Vinyl: http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/vinyl/
ferox Tape simulation: http://www.jeroenbreebaart.com/audio_vst.htm
Not free, but highly acclaimed rack unit for analog gear simulation

This actually has two magnetic drums that spin in front of the heads to physically emulate magnetic tape, so it's the closest to the real thing without actually using tape. It's very expensive for what it is. A real 1/2" tape deck would be cheaper by far, but then again, it's Neve.
http://rupertneve.com/products/portico-5042/ - inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Hey, I'm not saying I like LP's - I'm a FLAC man.
- Ajajadude, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1That's why I buy music, for the album art!
- asw66, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1My introduction to "rock 'n' roll" was Tom Jones on an 8 track tape. Yeah, I'm old.
- solid12345, on 08/10/2009, -0/+1You can't even get kids and 20s-somethings today to buy music CDs what makes you think they will buy 8-tracks?
- lydiasky, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Colbert bump!
- Tommydukes, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Why wont people let old ***** like this go?
- LikwidSteel, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Umm, what the ***** is wrong with these people? They do know that you can get better ***** quality and like a ***** year worth of music on a damned iPod that's nice and small, portable, and has a pretty screen to watch all the porn you ripped off of porntube.com?
- RogerStrong, on 07/11/2009, -1/+1Before I worked a whole summer to save up for a floppy drive for my Apple ][+, I used tape. And the most reliable tape drive I had - for getting the computer to recognize the data coming back in - was an 8-track deck with recording capability. I'd load a game into memory on a friend's computer from floppy, and dump the entire memory to 8-track. Soon I was filling old Carpenters and Anne Murray 8-Track tapes with software.
But I was happy as a clam when I got the 140kB floppy drive. - ddd666, on 07/11/2009, -0/+0love the sound you can get, not saying its better than digital, but its different, and that aint a bad thing
used one for the last time many yrs ago :( - bdbr, on 07/11/2009, -1/+1If 8-tracks make a comeback, this Arlington couple should be shunned for life and banned from the country.
