- byronm, on 12/04/2008, -4/+23Yesterday it was innovative market share, today its grabs.. tomorrow it will be owns. Can we stop with the 4-5 iPhone stories a day?
- Zippo, on 12/04/2008, -6/+20Hey, when you make a good product and market it well, it sells.
- Ryan2845, on 12/04/2008, -5/+18Tomorrow on Digg, iPhone captures 100% of "Everyone CWmike knows" market. SUCCESS!
- jwcorder, on 12/03/2008, -2/+14They make it sound like it came out yesterday and just jerked the rug out from underneath the smart phone market. Gains is a better wording.
- kinggimped, on 12/04/2008, -3/+14I'd be very interested to see what the market share % is for all countries in the world except the USA. Because if they're attempting to say that's a worldwide statistic, I'm calling *****.
Seriously, it's really not that popular a handset compared with the other brands in the UK and countries on the forefront of cellular technology. The US is about 12-18 months behind most of Europe and the Middle East in this regard (though it is catching up as interest continues to grow).
I had an iPhone (non-3G) for 3 weeks when they first came out. I didn't like it much... though I seem to be the only one in the entire world who thinks this. I thought it was essentially functionless compared with everything else on the market. Ended up trading it in for a Nokia N95-1, which is still a superb phone. Not a popular thing to say on Digg, I know, but that doesn't make it any less true. How a phone looks is really not as important to me as how it works, and I am continually impressed with the N95, rather than being continually frustrated, as I was with the iPhone.
To be completely honest I do wonder - apart, of course, from the big Apple logo on the back - why the iPhone is treated like such a holy relic on Digg. This site has a very tech-savvy user base in general, and I would expect most technophiles to be far more interested in the phone's functionality rather than its aesthetics. The iPhone is lacking so many pieces of basic functionality that you will find on almost any phone in the last 5 years (and I know that I don't even have to list them here), that I figured most Diggers would be able to see through the only obvious advantage it has over other phones on the market - i.e. looks - and see that under the shiny touchscreen it's an insanely overpriced, overhyped and overrated gadget.
Certainly a great first phone from Apple. No disputing that. Certainly not the 'ultimate' phone it is continually heralded to be (mostly by iPhone owners, admittedly), and certainly not worthy of front page news on Digg with every single itty bitty piece of information related to it. - TheUngod, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9Posers with enough of a life they didn't wait in line for hours.
- Invid, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8Er... no it doesn't. Not unless you load it up with a pile of background processes.
- CrikeyMike, on 12/17/2008, -17/+24New iPhone 3G owner here: Everyone I know wants one so I expect market share to grow quickly. There's really nothing like it. With mobile the future and iPhone doing Exchange mail better than Windows Mobile (had one, ack) devices, Microsoft looks in trouble to me.
- FlyingPhotog, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6WTF was RIM thinking, not putting WiFi on the Blackberry Storm?
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+7no chart? buried
- Radan, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Well, they are not denying that it is in fact a smartphone. However, it is a smartphone which isn't marketed towards the typical smartphone users. I actually agree (even though it's corny) with what Steve said on the first keynote that it's more of an Internet iPod phone-thingy than a "smartphone".
I dunno, maybe it's just me who's completely confused. - enotswhat, on 12/04/2008, -1/+6when does that AT&T contract end?
- jen55, on 12/03/2008, -15/+20The trouble is, that although everyone wants one i haven't met many owners (me included) who actually love it once they have one.
It frustrates me that it's so slow, no MMS just seems daft, no video is slightly annoying, and (I'm aware this is probably just me) i really hate the touch screen answering a call feature that means you need to move the slider across the phone rather than just press a button - my phone is usually in the bottom of my bag, I'm scrabbling around with one hand to find it and to slide the slider with one hand is awkward (maybe my hands are too small!)
They look pretty though. - whoreable, on 12/04/2008, -4/+8The Iphone also managed to gain 100% of the smug hipster demographic.
- nicc, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4wtf for the digg down?
he asked a question and I answered!
ATT has either a 4 or 5 year exclusivity contract that started in 2007.
that's why I ended the previous response with "I believe"; it ends in either 2011 or 2012. - manujarch, on 12/04/2008, -2/+6Every technology gets old. Bought HTC-no match for iphone display.
- 4NDr01D, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4MMS sucks
there are no standards for it between carriers
its amazing the carriers got SMS right... - Scanner, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Digg used to have tech savvy readers. Then the elections hit and it was nothing but a constant barrage of spam for/against whomever the media loved/hated that day. That drew in the "me too" crowd and the rest of the smart people bugged out.
The article does note that its numbers do not include the BB Storm yet (just released). The BB storm is the most direct competiton to the iphone to date. I have one for work and damn if it isn't the best damn BB i've ever used. Doesn't have wifi which I think is a huge mistake but it is by far better than any other BB on the market. Even the Bold seems old compared to it.
I think RIM will get a huge bump on the back of the Storm. - Topher06, on 12/04/2008, -0/+416.6% would blurt out iPhone, 84.4% will blurt out Blackberry.
- EvilKaz, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Wrong.
The only jb apps i have are the ones i need, swirly mms, bitesms (more functional sms with forwarding etc), cycorder (video recording) and categories (for app folders).
My phone is just as fast as any non-jb one.
Its obviously slower if you have winterboard (themes), bossprefs, various UI tweaks and loads of apps running in the background.
But I believe that's called choice. - Thomasaka, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Hi CWmike, I'm Thomas. Nice to meet you.
Now you can't say everyone you know wants an iphone, cause I sure as hell don't. - jonshipman, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3They were thinking, "Okay Verizon, we won't put WiFi on there so people will keep their data plans"
I bet if it were T-Mobile, RIM wouldn't have been able to release the Storm without Wifi. - dvsbstrd, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4It's a feature phone, not a smartphone.
- gllopc, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4I dunno - in the original keynote it was compared to the Treo, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile phones. I think it's not your usual smartphone, and so they are right in that regard.
- jonshipman, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2I left a T-Mobile Wing for an iPhone.
- nicc, on 12/04/2008, -2/+42012 I believe
- thenativeraver, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3That's because the average person is a dumb ass.
- Galaxylander, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3According to CNET, the iPhone isn't a smartphone, but somehow the LG Dare is...
- Zaphrod, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3No, You aren't the only one who didn't like it much. I sold mine in favour of a Samsung Omnia and haven't looked back.
- skyshock1, on 12/04/2008, -2/+4Yup. And maybe one day Apple will finally catch up to Nokia's 40+% marketshare.
But after the N97 is released, I don't see that happening. - techniqual, on 12/04/2008, -5/+6I thought apple said the iphone wasn't a "smartphone"...
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -2/+3Nokia always pwns everyone. If you actually read the article, Nokia is waaay ahead of Apple in the smartphone market.
- darkchild, on 12/04/2008, -2/+3If the figures are accurate, then I am really surprised because I have seen more people with blackberries and nokia smart phones than people with iphones.
- oldhick, on 12/04/2008, -8/+9I've had the opposite experience and I don't know anyone who doesn't love it compared to what else is on the market.
I wonder why yours is slow? Are you speaking of your 3G service or the OS? I've never had any performance complaints. - EvilKaz, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2yup try Swirly MMS for umm..er.. MMS ;)
- peterinjapan, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Smiling Peter is smiling because he sold his Microsoft stock before all the MooHoo stuff hit.
- FlyingPhotog, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1You liked it.
- geodebug, on 12/04/2008, -2/+3I like my iPhone but won't hesitate to dump it if anything better comes along (You know, 5-10 years down the line when android gets its crap together). Even if you hate Apple or feel the iPhone falls short at least they raise the expectations that other designers and manufacturers have to match.
- jbond, on 12/07/2008, -0/+1Excuse me but what is a Global Smartphone?
- rimantas, on 12/16/2008, -0/+1What you do not get is that tech savy people happen to like great UI too.
Your comments about market share are BS. And while other countires may be ahead of US on the front of the cellular technology, they are behind of US in termos of the iPhone sales start date. - Invid, on 12/04/2008, -4/+4FWIW all of your complaints can be fixed by jailbreaking. Cycorder for video recording, Touch to unlock to...touch to unlock (with the Winterboard theming engine), and I'm pretty sure there are MMS clients too (not 100% on this one as I don't use MMS).
If you can fall out of bed, you can handle jailbreaking too. It is MUCH easier than the earlier days. - cbeach, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1"blurt out"? Buried for snide story summary
- davidrools, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1It seems like Apple expanded the smartphone market by 16.6% rather than getting customers to ditch their existing smartphones for Apple's. A lot (not all) of iphone users are first time smartphone owners rather than ones who switched from a competing device.
- jeeky, on 12/04/2008, -5/+5But it's almost future-proof! Heck, the first iPhone isn't really considered outdated, and it's treated (tries) like the 3G. Thing is, maybe in the near future MMS will be enabled and same with Video. As for the sliding thing goes, it's better than having to enter in a digit password. to unlock the keypad. There aren't many smartphones that are not sliders like the G-1 or the Nokia or some Windows Mobile phones.
- strictnein, on 12/04/2008, -3/+3I want a RIM job!
- jkellynewyork, on 12/05/2008, -0/+0everyone i know loves it - do you own an ipod - if so, you will own an iphone no later than 4 years from now - count on it
- deroderugridder, on 12/04/2008, -2/+2Yeah, I also bought my car because of the windows
- dysonlu, on 12/05/2008, -1/+1Digg is the home of fanboys, even its founder admitted it. And God knows how many fanboys Apple has.
- inactive, on 12/04/2008, -1/+1A phone for baby birds. Who da thunk it?
- xsecretfiles, on 12/04/2008, -8/+7I've got mine the first day it came out in 2007, all of the rest are posers.

What is Digg?
