- ejmathews, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Tivo rules. News always welcome.
- h00ligan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4The device rocks.. but TIVO as a whole can't possibly rule with a 15 $ service charge for guide data, when they aren't taking a loss on the hardware, and you have to pay your cable company to rent a cable card anyway, which is already more than renting a DVR.
I just can't see who is paying $600 + and then getting into $15 a month +$5 additional(limited time) for a tivo.
It's the best DVR on the market.. without doubt.. but it's not that much better that I would ever recommend committing to a service contract AND eating that up front payment.. .
I love you tivo - please license the technology.- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I just can't stand subscription. I want a recorder like a VCR. I will program my schedules myself.
- tspencer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2There is also the TiVoHD. Can be had for 299 or less with most of the same features as its more expensive sibling.

- dforty3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Shweeet!
- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Now I just need a TiVo... and an iPhone.
- Darph.Bobo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You must be in the same tax bracket as my niece's babysitter.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/10/2007, -7/+4Is it too little too late? Satellite and Cable providers bundle a DVR with packages for new customers at no cost to them. Can TiVO survive when they still charge for a unit?
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I don't think so. The TiVo works so much better than the SA 8300HD DVR I have from my cable company that it was worth it to me to buy the Series3.
- fjc8, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It works better, but you have to watch a lot of TV for it to be $300 + $15/mo better.
- zoom1928, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2> have to watch a lot of TV...
Ironically, the other way around is true too. I only get to watch about two hours per month, so I think my TiVo was worth every penny because I waste very little time to get to exactly what I want to watch. For example, in two hours I can search through about 100 Sienfeld episodes that were recorded for the month to find four or five that were recorded that I haven't seen yet. With my old DVR from Charter, I'd spend much more time clicking buttons on the remote and waiting on things to load than I did actually watching TV.
- zoom1928, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2> have to watch a lot of TV...
- eddieroger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'd dig you up twice if I could. I had the 8300HD, and cried at the delays and missed recordings.

- jer2eydevil88, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Yeah I agree the DirectTV unit I have isn't fantastic but it was free, there is a lot to be said about something being free.
- Juano11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I have 2 series 2 TiVo's but have been using the HD cable box that my cable service provides.
It completely sucks compared to the useability of the TiVo. Sucks, sucks, sucks...
I've been wanting a Series 3, but have been hesitant since the MRV and TiVo to Go were not features. But now, I'm in! - saegiru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Every DVR I have seen bundled with a cable/satellite service has been amazingly counter intuitive and ugly. Take Insight/Comcast for example... their DVRs suck horribly and fail on recording things all the time(I used to have one.) Tivo works so much more smoothly on every aspect of the process, from finding shows to record to playing back. Granted there is something to be said for "Free", but I am more than willing to pay for a service that works consistently well.
- Juano11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1My STB is from insight. As I said before. It SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS!!!
- Wosat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Just because something lacks a line-item fee does not make it free. Everyone with a "free" DVR is paying for them, they just don't have a choice not to.
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5I don't think so. The TiVo works so much better than the SA 8300HD DVR I have from my cable company that it was worth it to me to buy the Series3.
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3This is great news that I thought would never come. I'm glad they got all of the DRM crap worked out.
- a1aave, on 10/10/2007, -8/+4Tivo is dead. That company is having alot of trouble turning a profit. Such a shame because they have a really strong name brand and product. The only way they can survive is to join up with comcast or turner.
- scoobydiesel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I love my Tivo HD, so Im happy to hear about this...need to see if TTG will work with my Mac? knowing my luck it wont o_O
- tspencer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2With Toast 8 or Popcorn 3 it will work great.
- spataray, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1By the end of September Time Warner is going to stop supporting HD channels on their cable cards. So I still won't be able to record HD on my S3. They say we can get HD on their cable box but S3 doesn't support cable boxes. What is Tivo going to do about that?
- unoriginal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is my exact dilemma with TWC in San Diego. They are moving the HD channels to SDV (switched digital video) which the Tivo Series 3 just cant handle. It really stinks because I like Tivo but if I cant record the HD content that I really want why would I buy one? Also since the Series 3 is only compatible with cable I would have to use it with Time Warner as Directv and Dish are not viable choices.
- peterlisanti, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I believe that Tivo is working on a fix for this. It will be a usb dongle you plug into your Series3/HD (called a "tuning resolver").
Not ideal, but at least it's a start. - tirofiban, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Fios TV
- saegiru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3That sounds like a bunch of crap. The whole point of a cablecard is so you can access a cable company's programming WITHOUT having to use their proprietary boxes. There has to be a workaround for it, otherwise it seems on the edge of illegality.
- spalVl, on 10/10/2007, -11/+5Could do this with MythTV 2 years ago. Welcome to 2005 TiVo.
- saegiru, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4You can't use Cablecards with MythTV, thus you are stuck with OTA HDTV only. TiVo supports Cablecards, so your options with it are a bit more varied. Congratulations on being a hater of a technology and service you know nothing about.
- Ch1ll1ng, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's only a matter of time before more cablecard products come out.
- saegiru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1True, but that doesn't apply to the "Could do this with MythTV 2 years ago. Welcome to 2005 TiVo." comment.
- Ch1ll1ng, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It's only a matter of time before more cablecard products come out.
- bjwest, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Mind telling me how you get HD with your MythTV? Not counting the OTA stations, as far as I know, it's impossible. If it is possible, I'd switch to MythTV in a heartbeat.
- spalVl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1ATSC, QAM, and STB firewire.
- eddieroger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The two replies shouldn't be dug down. Myth is nice, but you just can't get HD premium channels with it. Series2 has had TTG for more than two years, so that argument doesn't hold either.

- peterlisanti, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4Ha! Tivo never had balls to begin with. They are the entertainment industry's bitch.
- SoxFanNH, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Just get a HD Homerun for $160 and BeyondTV and record the HD right to you computer...
- saegiru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3...and not be able to record any encrypted channels that require a cablecard. Awesome solution!
- saegiru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Well its about time. I was seriously worried that it would never happen.
- Ch1ll1ng, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Balls...why wast money on Tivo, build your own DVR.
- zoom1928, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Balls...why waste money on a box or parts that will never be as good as a TiVo, just buy your own TiVo.
- SheilaNoya, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1TIVO has been around for a long time now, but they have never been able to make a profit. With all of the cable companies offering DVRs now, I just don't see how TIVO is expected to survive (since they have true competition now). Here's TIVO's most recent income statement (YEP - They're still losing more money than they make):
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=TIVO&annual - Brain1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1 I got Comcast Cable TV in Tacoma ,Wa.They Deliver All Channels in Digital Format, Plus they still deliver Channels 2 thru 99, in Analog Format. Ive got Beyond TV, and my Hauppauge 500 Capture card only gets the 2-thru 99 analog channels.Ive heard the digital channels 100 and up are encrypted, so it wouldnt do me any good to get a digital capture card
.Does TIVO get those encrypted digital channels?Would it replace the Motorola that comcast gave me for my Living Room?IIf so, would it work on Premium Channels, and Pay per View??- saegiru, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, TiVo would get those encrypted digital channels if you got a CableCard from Comcast to use in your Series 3 or Tivo HD. It would replace the motorola on some aspects, like the premium channels and all the HD content, but you wouldn't be able to use the PPV from the box, you would have to call in and order things from PPV over the phone. Also, if you use any of the OnDemand stuff, that is inaccessible from any cablecard device currently as well. Eventually they are going to have full duplex CableCards that can receive AND send, but currently all the CableCards can only receive.
- Brain1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Comcast just improved the software on the Motorola. Now, it doesnt lock-up so much.Bu,t It's ease of use is still chaotic. It doesnt come close to the ease of use that BeyondTV has.
Does TIVO have a user friendly Interface?
- Juano11, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The friendly user interface is TiVos selling point. It may be more expensive than the other options, but you will have a hard time "going back" after getting used to using your TiVo.
