- Dagreenman, on 10/28/2009, -2/+26The GPS market just got VERY interesting.
- moebis, on 10/28/2009, -4/+24wow, wow, wow, wow, wow...... I can't believe I'm sitting here hating my iphone now. It's like Google has been planning this for the last few years, Google maps works perfectly with the Android 2.0 software/DROID. NICE!!
- moo113, on 10/29/2009, -0/+14There's a reply button, this isn't twitter.
- StubbyClapp, on 10/29/2009, -1/+15"Google said it is "eagerly working" with Apple to bring Google Maps Navigation to the iPhone."

Car: *SPLASH* - tweedius, on 10/29/2009, -0/+12Why is it unfair? Competition makes products better. It was probably unfair to the horse and buggy business (by your definition) that the automobile was created, however, I'll take my car any day.
Competition is competition, only better products are made and then we get to choose which product we want. Sounds like a win to me. - peestandingup, on 10/29/2009, -1/+11That doesnt mean *****. Google was also "working" with Apple to bring Google Voice to the iPhone & you see how that turned out.
Dont hold your breath. - Alias1431, on 10/29/2009, -4/+12SHUT YOUR MOUTH. SHUT YOUR GODDAMNED MOUTH.
- eatupmartha, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6Is this any different than Microsoft releasing a free browser when Netscape was selling them for $49.99? Was that just competition? Ask a TomTom stockholder who lost 20% of their value today what they think of competition :-)
Google is great and if they want to give their stuff away for free that is fine with me -- I'll take it, especially when it is better. But this will hardly increase competition because not every company is successful enough to give their stuff away. Stuff like this can eliminate competition. - peestandingup, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5Man, that dude from Google has one big ass right nostril. I couldnt stop staring at it!
- MikeMania, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5Well nothing is really free. They will just have to innovate and make their devices cheaper than the ones that run Google Navigation.
- 1RandomNickname, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4This is all fine and dandy for the city, but what happens when you drive someplace where there's little to no cellular connectivity? If this thing supports offline/cached maps, the other GPS providers are sunk!
- ptFoe, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4magic
- BenRoth, on 10/29/2009, -1/+5Maybe we should subsidize those GPS companies because they are too big to fail.
- Culyt, on 10/29/2009, -1/+4Much better video, thanks.
I think that guys in front of a green screen though, even with the bike going past (probably deliberate to make it seem less so) the lighting seems wrong somehow. - Alias1431, on 10/29/2009, -0/+3Thank you!
- lorddazzer, on 10/29/2009, -1/+4For some locations the google van goes in the opposite direction of where you're trying to go. How does it show the turn then?
But looks good! - Jpatano, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2seems unfair to me that those GPS providers charge a few hundred bucks for the GPS unit, and then they STILL charge you a "subscription" fee.... what are you subscribing to ? most of those satellites providing GPS signals were placed in orbit by the government, and are not costing garmin a cent to access. They all found a way to milk you for more money, and have been doing it so long that people are shocked when another company won't play ball with the rest, charging what SHOULD be charged... NOTHING!
Anyone who owned a GPS device when they first became commercially available can tell you that there were no fees after you purchased the device. - tacojohn48, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2The horseless carriage is just a passing fad.
- diemunkiesdie, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2It took me a moment to realize that woman was not supposed to be part of the video. I guess he filmed this at Starbucks or something!
- Tddupre, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2what would it take, I am an addicted iPhone owner, but the droid does seem to be an iPhone killer. Plus the android app store already has like 10k apps
- zer0mass, on 10/29/2009, -0/+2It will cache some maps to the sdcard. I haven't seen any details on how this works but I would guess it is logical to cache maps along the route you selected plus a few off the original path.
- woofers07, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2I need a new phone desperately, my BB 8830 is a serious pile of crap right now (the scroll ball is hanging by a thread and randomly pushes enter if I don't lock the keyboard, I accidentally texted a friend 150 times one night while sleeping) I was sold on the Storm 2 for awhile, but this may have just changed my mind. Thoughts?
Btw, I'd rather shave my balls with a dull razor than switch to AT&T, so no iPhone. - Kershek, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2How come people didn't say this when IE was given away for free and Netscape started to flounder?
- tacojohn48, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2Looking back it looks like Google might have had this in mind when they started Google Maps.
- Philbert, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Same goes for Street View. There're almost no roads with Street View around my area.
- Haz3rd, on 10/29/2009, -3/+4But the car wasn't given away for free.
- lemonfire, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Picture or it didn't happen!
- ptFoe, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1apple fan boys must be crying to their mamas now.
- Haz3rd, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1I'm just trying to point out that it makes it almost impossible to compete, tightening Google's hold on the market. Guess you didn't see that.
- joep323, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2Before I watched the video I read this comment and thought to myself, "Nah, I am sure its not that bad" but then I watched the video and I couldn't stand it! I had to pretty much scan through the presentation.
- twatsmaketwitts, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1So glad to hear that the Hero is getting 2.0, can't wait to get eclair :)
- mastertrevor, on 10/29/2009, -2/+3FTA: "He shuttered himself in his Copenhagen, Denmark, apartment, tuned his television to MTV, watched some music videos and let his thoughts drift."
Music Videos on MTV? Yeah right. - diemunkiesdie, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1That guy talks
like William
Shatner.
He is pretty
obviously in front of
a green screen. - MonoDede, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2Awww poor companies, they're gonna go broke! I know, we should just start paying them monthly dues anyway because they're already used to it right? /s
Grow up. Times change, technology changes things, it just happens. They need to adapt or go out of business. - BenRoth, on 10/29/2009, -2/+3I'm ready for Google to take over the whole Internet and make it awesome.
- deslock, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1saves maps to SD card. Make sure you run the search before you find yourself outside of coverage of course.
- deslock, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Or... you can get an android instead.
Just saying. - EdwardsNH, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1I was thinking this same thing. What if, at the time I decide I need to use my GPS, I'm getting no cell reception?
- ScottyAnimal, on 10/29/2009, -1/+2It isn't as detailed, but you can sort of do this witth Google Latitude on a Blackberry. Turn on your location and get directions. The dot will move as you do and it has turn by turn direction you can manually skip to.
I do it all the time to get places. - Philbert, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1That's from AN article. Unfortunately not this one.
- deslock, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Apple fans are commenting widely that Google will submit an app for this to Apple (which will likely be rejected for "modifying core functionality").
<s>
Why can't Apple innovate instead of copying this idea?
</s>
It never goes both ways with Apple fans. Sigh. - efice32, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Why would google even need to submit this to Apple as a new app?
If Apple wants it on the iPhone, they can just work with google to modify the existing Maps app considering it's built on google maps. - immatellyouwhat, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1*Kayak: *SPLASH*
There fixed it for you. - MattBD, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1This and Google Voice could both be killer apps, easily. And it's apps that will sell a mobile OS more than anything else.
Android is starting to look more and more like a serious contender every day. I have an HTC Magic and it's a great phone. - jwblackwell, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1thats my point!
- efice32, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Here's the interesting part of this: Apple recently purchased a maps company. Google is pissed that Apple blocked Google Voice. Google is doing a lot of things with Verizon promoting Android. These things are working together to suggest a bit of a small falling out between Google and Apple.
This suggests that the next major revision of the iPhone software may have a revamped maps app without google maps being at the core of it (if google and apple really are having a falling out). This would obviously not be a great thing for Apple unless they can make something better than google maps, which is unlikely. Frankly, google has done all of the back-end work for their maps service and Apple would be foolish to throw that away and have to do it themselves.
However, with this new technology and turn-by-turn stuff Google is demo-ing, they have the bargaining power here with Apple. Apple will no doubt want this on the iPhone, Google will probably want something in return for just giving this technology to the iPhone when they're trying to promote and grow Android. Could we see an officially sanctioned Google Voice app for the iPhone allowed in exchanged for Google's turn-by-turn tech in a revamped stock iPhone maps app? Wouldn't surprise me. Also, If I'm TomTom with my $100 app and Apple comes in with Google and puts turn-by-turn in the phone for free, I'd be pissed.
It should be really interesting to see how this whole thing plays out. - Falldog, on 10/29/2009, -0/+1Maybe in Europe MTV actually means MTV?
