- spookyttws, on 11/07/2009, -12/+91I'm just excited because the flood of all these high end, reasonably cheap smart phones will force Apple to really step up with the next generation of the iPhone.
- yocouchdigga, on 11/06/2009, -5/+77I've been on board with Android since day one and I'm fully convinced that it will continue to gain market-share.
- gkskillz, on 11/07/2009, -2/+40How about a WVGA screen? Seriously, the text renders so crisply and you can read webpages (in landscape) with little to no zooming. Looking at the iPhone screen (480x320) after using the Droid's screen (854x480), it seems like you're looking at blurry text.
Also, background processes let me listen to Pandora while I *gasp* browse the web and text people. It's nice. - StubbyClapp, on 11/07/2009, -5/+31This feels like Lisa Lionheart vs. Malibu Stacy.
Everybody is eagerly anticipating a Droid but then the iPhone is going to come out with a small improvement and it'll be iPhone Central again. - DivineMonkey, on 11/07/2009, -2/+25Me too, and i'm getting a G2 touch in 2 months. Can't wait for 2.0. Google are really onto something with Android. I think in 6 - 8 months, it's gonna be the platform to beat.
- njb444, on 11/07/2009, -3/+25As an iphone user, I'm actually glad that products like the Droid are coming out and giving Apple some good competition. My contract expired last year, and I was originally planning on getting the new version of the iphone in the summer. However, the 3gs offered little over the 3g, so I decided to hold back and I still have the original iphone to this day.
Although I think that Android will definitely gain significant market share in the mobile market, its true impact will be seen in the broader market. Ebook readers are catching on, and Barnes and Noble's nook and Spring's alex are perfect examples of how Android will have a revolution that is more broad than deep. - abajaj2280, on 11/07/2009, -5/+26i've already decided that i'm getting a phone that runs on android when i go to college, i will even switch networks from At&***** to Verizon
- chockster, on 11/07/2009, -3/+23"Apple may not want that slowdown or battery drain."
Give a crap, I want it. If I want to run five apps at once and drain my battery it should be my choice. - Junior612, on 11/07/2009, -6/+24After using a 16 gig iPhone 3G and a BlackBerry Storm I'll never use anything besides Droid based phones again. The moto droid totally rocks period full stop.
- freshyill, on 11/07/2009, -9/+26It looks like a nice phone, but it's not revolutionary. One obvious problem is that the name "Droid" is Verizon's (actually licensed from Lucasfilm), and not Motorola. So everywhere else in the world (where an iPhone is an iPhone is an iPhone), this phone is going to have a different name. Bone headed, move. It's just another Android phone at this point. A particularly nice one, but in a few months, there will be nothing unique about it.
- Apex3, on 11/07/2009, -1/+18I love my G1. I'm hoping something new and cool will come out on T-mobile by the time I break my G1. I keep dropping it, so it's bound to happen eventually. I will say it's held up better than my previous phones though.
I love that these new Android phones are coming out though, it will only improve as popularity increases.
And as much as I hate Apple, I have to admit I'm glad they released the iPhone, on the other side of you iPhone users in here, it makes every other company work harder to try to make a better phone. I know I've noticed a sharp increase in the quality of phones in the past couple years. - feanix, on 11/07/2009, -4/+20How about being less draconian and schizophrenic with what Apple allow into the app store? How about a more open philosophy, rather than trying to lock down and control every aspect of the "iPhone experience"?
- reiggin, on 11/07/2009, -0/+15But why? Is "black" suddenly not PC? Or is "licorice" the new "black?"
- ZebZ, on 11/07/2009, -1/+15The Droid alone won't topple the iPhone, but the sheer number of quality Android devices coming out in the next weeks and months could challenge Apple's platform.
- masterkenobi, on 11/07/2009, -1/+12I was one of the people that lined up in Manhattan at midnight, and after running around all day and using various features of the phone, I have to say that it is everything that it is hyped up to be.
The keyboard took a little bit of getting used to, but by the end of the day, I was typing error free, and much faster than I ever typed on an iPhone. It's silly, but one of the cool things I did today was when my friends and I were looking for the exact address for a restaurant we were looking for, I just fired up Google voice command search, and the results popped up super fast. I also just set up Google Voice when I got home, haven't had much of a chance to play with that yet though. - jv2k, on 11/07/2009, -0/+10Didn't they buy it in 2005? When did the G1 come out again?
- HastyBoom, on 11/07/2009, -0/+10Console game pads have always had the d-pad on the left. But I'll get over it, maybe.
- eclaires, on 11/06/2009, -4/+13Bonus: Motorola Droid comes in Licorice
- djgreedo, on 11/07/2009, -4/+13Unless Apple adds a physical keyboard, stops playing app Nazi, updates that boring interface, allows multi-tasking, etc. there will still be plenty of better phones than the iPhone.
The fanboys forget that Apple has only 14% of the smartphone market (if you accept that a phone incapable of multi-tasking can be considered a smart phone) and is not the industry monster that iPhone lovers constantly claim it to be.
Windows Mobile still has a bigger market share than the iPhone and WM has lost about 10% of the market in recent times. - hardeep1singh, on 11/07/2009, -5/+14D-Pad on the wrong side. Please make corrections and relaunch.
- Ford_Prefect2nd, on 11/07/2009, -1/+9Multi-tasking, Open access, Keyboard, Flash (not the one for the Camera), Flash (for the Camera), Better codec support, Not locked to one carrier, Not locked to iTunes, Opera, User defined interface and more customization in general. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
As to your replies, its my bloody phone, if I drain the battery, that's my CHOICE. Apple has become that giant head on the screen, telling you how to act, that they raged against in their timeless commercial. I don't think I am too dumb to use a phone. Let me choose how to use MY STUFF. - tastypastry, on 11/07/2009, -5/+13I really do enjoy my rooted G1, Android is a soild OS that will only continue to get better. I will admit though, the HTC HD2 loooks mighty fine, and it's coming to Tmobile.
- dagamer34, on 11/07/2009, -2/+10OMG using Google Voice on this thing is SO amazing. fap fap fap. :)
- gkskillz, on 11/07/2009, -0/+8It really depends on the hardware. I'll agree that running a lot of processes can slow down the phone, but the Droid has 256MB of RAM (I remember upgrading to 256MB on my desktop, but that was a while ago) and a Cortex A8, so it definitely flies where the G1 choked
I'll agree with battery life, but I'd rather have the choice. Android 1.6 also has a battery visualization which will tell you what has been draining your battery. I can charge my phone at my desk during the day so battery life isn't really a problem for me. - MWeather, on 11/07/2009, -5/+12"people will drain their batteries REALLY fast when running multiple things at once,"
So carry a spare battery. Oh, I think I found another thing the iPhone can't do. - trav6, on 11/07/2009, -2/+9huh? Android been out for over a year now....
- dkonigsbach, on 11/07/2009, -6/+13This is not the Droid you are looking for.
(Oh, come on. Someone had to say it.) - hardeep1singh, on 11/07/2009, -7/+13Another mobile revolution with in America. It seems very soon you'll lose the prehistoric tag and reach the levels of the Rest of the World in Mobile Space.
But this might require Networks to open up and accept the role of a dumb pipe that just deliver voice/data to whatever device I purchase from the market and keeps its mouth shut. - rockets, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6Answer: YES
- nextekcarl, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6What???
- LoudMusic, on 11/07/2009, -0/+6Don't hold your breath on that Apple thing.
- kubedawg, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5I just wish it wasn't so damn expensive....
- jewishmafio, on 11/07/2009, -0/+5Start? no. Continuation...yes.
- signspam1, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4It's just a ***** phone!
- yocouchdigga, on 11/07/2009, -5/+9No hard-keyboard? No, thanks.
- ZebZ, on 11/07/2009, -1/+5Except that Pre was Palm's last stand, really.
The Droid is the first of dozens of Android phones to come out in the next few months. - reiggin, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4New Every Two discount + my company's Verizon discount program = $99 ($107, including tax) shipped, no rebates & no fees.
Couldn't pass that up. Should be here Monday. - chockster, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4@oyster- the battery life argument is a load of crap. What about when the phone is plugged in- i.e. when it's used with an in-car kit for GPS?
Apple are just totally inflexible because they're lazy. Yes, most people would not 'get' the backgrounding thing, it could be turned off by default. It's not rocket science, they're supposed to be UI masters, I'm sure they could manage something. Oh wait, someone already did with the Backgrounder app. - cbeach, on 11/07/2009, -0/+4njb444: "the 3gs offered little over the 3g"
You need to try one out. It's much snappier, has voice control, compass, video capability and 32GB of storage. It offers a LOT over the 3G. - Nouman6, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4well, we can hope for a 5mp camera :)
But more so than hardware, I really want it to work with my PC. let my calendar go to sunbird, my notes on my desktop. The things they had from day 1 working in sync would be the best. - chrisinsocalif, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4I thought the HTC HD2 was windows mobile based....If the release an adroid based phone for T-mobile, I may have found my next phone. Is the touch keyboard that bad? (I dont have a smart phone, the phone i have now is a krzr from boost which i hate with all my soul)
- jewishmafio, on 11/07/2009, -2/+5you'd rather have it on the left side... why? im pretty sure its more useful on the right for most people.
- macfan93, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3After using the droid, I can safely say that it is a better phone than the iPhone.
It is more intuitive, faster, nicer looking, and its an all around great device.
Apple needs to implement a lot of droid features (multi-tasking, facebook integration into contacts, etc) into their phone before it can be considered the "best phone" in my opinion. - rusty0101, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3I'm actually very positively impressed with the HTC Dream/G1 phone for durability. Before Thanksgiving last year I loaded up a couple of the free games that were already available for the phone, and at my sister's place let a number of kids play with the phone. I figured that if it can't hold up to what kids can do in a semi-unsupervised setting for a couple of hours, it isn't going to be able to handle the abuse I'm going to give it over a 2 year contract. It did well, and continues to do well.
The two 'flaws' that the phone has as the moment (in my view, others see other flaws of course) are battery life and processor speed. Mutually exclusive of course, if you are planning on keeping the exact same form factor. But the Motorola phone shows that increasing the size of the phone isn't necessarily a bad thing, which means you can correct both flaws. - superkendall, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4I like that Verizon's name gives a nod to the Android heritage though. I don't think them being named differently would be such an issue if it's pretty apparent which ones are running Android...
- stuffradio, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3Yeah, I'm glad I held back on upgrading. I told myself the only way I'd upgrade is if I was able to avoid the off-contract price. You know what? I can't! So now I'm waiting for the 4th or 5th gen phone. If Apple continues a yearly cycle of product refreshes (which if Android picks up pace, Apple will be forced to do more than that probably), then I will wait for the 5th gen phone when I get off my 3G contract.
- stuffradio, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4But now it's picking up steam in phone manufacturer adoption!
- inactive, on 11/07/2009, -0/+3I had planned to get some sort of blackberry since I need a smart phone but I'm leaning toward the droid now. Has everything I want without being an iphone. I don't like Apple nor do I want to type on a touch screen. I like a physical keyboard.
- jv2k, on 11/07/2009, -2/+5What do you mean it's nowhere? People need to check there facts, the pre is selling solid number.
On top of the the droid is just one of many different android phones. Like it or not the iphone is going to lose this war and this isn't speculation or wishful thinking, this is fact. Android is on multiple networks, build by multiple companies, and it's priced at multiple levels(despite the fact that even the cheap ones are pretty well functional). - lifenstein, on 11/07/2009, -1/+4@oyster
* If multitasking drains the current battery too soon, build a better one. Innovation wouldn't be too hard for the mighty Apple, would it?
* Yes, people do think ".. a phone needs to be a piece of high end photographic equipment.". Because when I see something worth remembering & sharing, I want to capture the moment in a photo or a video. I don't want to have to carry around a spare camera or handycam all the time. Since I'm already carrying a smartphone all the time, it should do as much as it can.
* Nightlife is a part of many a culture, and phone cameras should have flash. Xenon ones.
* Browser flash - As much as I'd love to play flash games (not), I don't think that's needed. Websites should learn to use HTML5's new technologies instead of using flash.
So there. Current iPhone + Multitasking + 5MP Camera + Xenon Flash + Better Battery = Bliss. -
