- WordsnCollision, on 11/08/2009, -4/+71These aren't the droids I'm looking for.
- sickswaystop, on 11/09/2009, -1/+45easy way to save your battery on most devices
bluetooth=OFF (unless in use)
wifi=OFF (unless in use)
gps=OFF (unless in use)
and never use brightness at 100% - darkane, on 11/09/2009, -2/+37Maybe I'm missing something here, but this paragraph seems very contradictory to the point of the article:
"One site did a review specifically on the battery life of the Droid. For the study, the Droid screen brightness was maxed out, the screen was set to 'Never Sleep', MP3's were loaded and the media player was turned on to 'Repeat All Songs'. They even threw in an hour of Google Navigation usage while all of that was going on and still managed over 7 hours of battery life. Let's see your old flip-phone do that."
I know a couple of people with the Droid who use it like regular people do (and not try to make it a replacement for their main computer) who say it has lasted since they bought it without needing to be charged again. So 2-3 days. Which is pretty much right in line with (and the same for) every other mobile device on the planet. - sneaker98, on 11/09/2009, -2/+33Or, perhaps you should think of it in terms of overall device longevity. You *don't* have to send to Droid back to manufacturer if your battery charge starts decreasing after a while. Or if you have any sort of battery problems at all.
Swappable batteries are a *good* thing. Don't just tout Apple's way of doing things, please. - kevin52094, on 11/09/2009, -0/+31"The phone has to be powered up to be of any use beyond a glorified paper weight" Really? I never would have guessed!
- Telexen, on 11/09/2009, -4/+32Why is the Droid being singled out as being bad? In general, smart phones have horrible battery life. And yes for some it may take new charging habits, but anyone who is fairly familiar with cell phones knows better than to expect to go several days on a charge.
At least you can swap the battery in the Droid if it runs dead...I know I've been 3 days with mine now...and going 12+ hours with HEAVY usage/downloading is pretty damn good I think. - peterjmag, on 11/09/2009, -2/+29PCWorld can suck it. I've been pretty impressed with my Droid's battery so far, especially considering how much I use it.
- Elderon, on 11/08/2009, -9/+34stupid article. Doesn't mention that the battery can be swapped unlike some other popular smart phones. Also this phone multi-tasks so if you leave all your apps open in the background of course your battery will die much faster.
- replaysMike, on 11/09/2009, -0/+17My cell phone takes AA's so I never need to charge it. The 80's are making a comeback!
- Atario, on 11/09/2009, -0/+14But at least if you screw the battery up, you can replace it.
- sneaker98, on 11/09/2009, -1/+14Agreed. Rather than changing charging habits, lets change usage habits!
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/09/2009, -1/+13You're doing it wrong.
- willdelaney, on 11/09/2009, -2/+12My Droid has been off the charger since 11am today:
- with Wi-Fi on all day
- I have been sent/received ~300 texts
- I browsed the web for probably 10-15min
- I used SportsTap (which runs in the background as well) multiple times to check football games etc
- I also used Pandora for about 20minutes on high quality mode (if that makes a difference)
- I also used different apps (facebook, twitter etc) a few times an hour
As I look at my phone, it has been off the charger for 12hr 42min
My battery level is at 40%
That is a pretty normal day for me, and on days where I didn't use wifi, it would obviously last a bit longer, as my battery status states that WiFi used up 13% of my battery so far.
I know people differ in their use, but for an average smartphone user like me, I don't think I'll be running into a problem anytime soon. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/09/2009, -5/+14Right, that's why the iPhone, whose battery can't be swapped, gets such great battery life compared to the Dro-OH WAIT
- willdelaney, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8Yep
Settings > About Phone > Battery Use
It breaks down all the things that have contributed to at least 1% of the current drain of the battery.
Quite a nice feature in my opinion
EDIT - It looks like this - http://tinyurl.com/ykxt22u
But with a few more things on the list in my case like WiFi, Cell Standby etc - MonkeyFit, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7That...is ***** awesome.
- oblivious87, on 11/09/2009, -0/+74 inches thick? Holy ***** dude, is that a cell phone in your pants or are you just happy to see me??
- factsahoy, on 11/09/2009, -2/+9"Swappable batteries are a kludge for devices with poor battery life."
No; you're a tool of Apple's marketing department.
THINK IT THROUGH.
If you did think anything through, you could also come up with simple solutions to your big battery-contact problem (assuming that this problem even exists; I haven't seen the battery). - TheOther1, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7Driod is being singled out because it's black.
<ducks> - willdelaney, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7Isn't that what phones are for nowadays? lol
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 11/09/2009, -2/+9PCWorld has been a Mac whore rag for sometime now. It's pretty obvious what's going on here...
- MonkeyFit, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6wait, it tells you which features have used up how much of the battery?
- linagee, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6Try playing an mp3 on your desktop and see how much CPU that uses. Probably less than 1%. MP3 codecs do not use *that much* CPU power.
Try playing flash or something (I don't know if the droid can do that.) and you'll see the CPU usage spike. - sahaskatta, on 11/09/2009, -1/+7so you are telling me you did everything with this phone but use it as a phone? ;)
- willdelaney, on 11/09/2009, -2/+8Isn't that how every phone works?
You charge it before it dies. Am I missing something? - deadpoetic333, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5Yes, display often takes up >40% of the battery life for me and browser takes up 12% give or take. It's pretty nifty.
- robdazomba, on 11/09/2009, -4/+9iDon't have battery problems.
- sneaker98, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5Obviously, it all depends on how you use it. Maybe the example in the article is a travelling salesman and has to use Google nav for hours on end! I'm sure there are hundreds of ways to drain the juice out of any smartphone in 7 hours.
- EllimistX, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5Oh, I apologize, Mr. High-Roller, that working as a research assistant doesn't meet your definition of a job. You know, I forgot that as a 23-yr old student, I'm expected to be making over 100k easily. If I thought my job was all that glorified and important, I'd have said I'm a researcher instead of an assistant, you douchebag.
Perhaps you should go back to being a student, where you'd learn to read my post in which I said that I call while driving (handsfree, if you care to know about how safely I do it) and never mentioned texting while driving, which I don't do. - MercenarySlick, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5It's funny because the article inadvertently describes the Droid as actually having pretty stellar battery life. 7 hours of constant music playing including 1 hour of navigation, with the screen on highest brightness and sleep mode disabled? Only then does it die? That sounds pretty spectacular to me, especially considering how large and sharp the Droid's screen is.
I'm sure only the most insanely heavy users are going to have a problem. And then... all they have to do is fork out $39.99 for an extra battery. They'll never have to worry about a dead device in the space of their waking life. - EllimistX, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4That is a kickass feature...
- Dylson, on 11/09/2009, -2/+6iSee what you did there.
- Dylson, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4How the... how do you take screen shots with android??
- DigablePlanet, on 11/09/2009, -3/+7I got an idea. Carry a spare battery with you or charge on the go (e.g. car or work). I live in Asia and the smartphones here are battery hogs. Everyone simply carries a spare battery or most places like restaurants, bars, gyms, etc have phone chargers for you to use for a while.
- MercenarySlick, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5I carry a battery around with me for my current phone. Batteries are small enough (and sturdy enough) that you could put them in your wallet and not notice it. I can even fit a spare battery in the credit card slot on the silicone case on my phone without it adding much bulk or weight.
- kjones555, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4With my Droid, I charged it the first time out the box on Friday morning and the next time I had to charge it was Saturday Night...then I had to recharge it Sunday night. So I'm getting a steady 12+ hours out of my phone and normally on my phone, I'm surfing the web, facebooking and texting so that's actually not bad!
Beats the hell out of my former G1... - deadpoetic333, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4I'm glad everyone finds the battery life normal, compared to my old basic phone my Droid battery life drops unbelievably fast so it's good to hear that it's on the normal side for smartphones. I've had a dozen comments from less tech savvy friends like "Why didn't you get an iPhone?" "What's better about this phone?" and my favorite "HA, I like your rip off of the iPhone." Often when I go through the list of how the phone is different from the iPhone and why I got it the majority of them just listen with a smirk holding their iPhones.
- deadpoetic333, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3Newchap, honestly you're a dick that's disconnected with the times. Yes, it is often perfectly fine to receive a text and not a call since my phone would be on vibrate and I can communicate without actually having to speak. I would rather someone sends me a text if it's just info, in the case that I don't pick it up and don't have to listen to some voice mail which I often have to replay so I can redial a number they are dictating to me.
- MonkeyFit, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3What if he's sending texts to different people? what if these people are in situations where a call would be disruptive but a text would not?
- GiggleStick, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4I'm filing my patent on recessing the battery contacts within the plastic housing slightly and using spring contacts in the device which go into the recessed area and make contact with the battery terminals. I hope nobody has thought of that yet.
- Dylson, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3If you aren't doing that, you're doing it wrong. Lol.
- EtherGnat, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3To further put it in perspective I measured the Droid battery and it's less than half the volume of the (rather typical) ball point pen I had in my pocket.
- EtherGnat, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3Except I'm not aware of a smartphone that has significantly better battery life WITHOUT a swappable battery. It's not like anybody is going to force you to carry an extra battery if you don't want--best of both worlds.
Also comparing your mammoth batteries of yesteryear to a matchbook sized battery is ludicrous.
For comparison's sake:
Droid: 6.4 hour talk time
iPhone 3GS: 5 hour talk time - deadpoetic333, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3I don't want to call 70% of the people I'm texting, I want to keep in contact with them until the next time I see them. And 50 to 75 texts a day isn't that much, when I was dating my ex I would go over my limit of 2,500 texts a month every single time often running out with over a week till they reset. And yes Digg, this was my imaginary girlfriend/hand.
- bluearrow, on 11/09/2009, -3/+5I've had my Droid since Friday and have had to charge it everyday before it died.
- swollentiki, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I was showing my Droid off to an iPhone user and he was impressed. He was going to consider getting one if Verizon wasn't getting the iPhone soon.
- 4rp4n3t, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2had that old sarcasm bypass huh davidlick...
- Lemon, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2How is this worth an article? Seriously?
FTFA: Strohmeyer says, "I can tell you that, so far, this thing consistently dies by 7:00 P.M. if I take it off the charger at 8:00 A.M. It definitely uses some serious battery. It's just a power-hungry phone."
My Magic is better than this, iPhone3Gs and my old G1 are worse than this...
Who cares? Charge your phone! - dagamer34, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2It's not "bad battery life". It's that people are using them for something other than phone calls!
- Arghblarg, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3Wow my Palm V lasts about 2 weeks on a single charge! Then again no one calls me. They can't. Maybe that's a good thing. ;/
