- robrohan, on 06/10/2009, -4/+227I can't see the Nike+Integration thing really swaying people. It's a nice feature, but I don't think it's fits in with the other top level items.
"I would get a Pre but it doesn't have Nike+Integration" ... yeah ...
$0.02. - mmittimm, on 06/10/2009, -8/+170Nike+? Really? It's that important?
I can see them behind the scenes:
"Hey, Apple doesn't have enough positives on this list!"
"Ehh... just throw in something irrelevant that the other two don't have and publish it." - AFelsinger, on 06/10/2009, -11/+95$5 says Palm updates the Pre with video recording before June 19th.
- salmanjafri, on 06/10/2009, -18/+87Proud Android owner over here! I love my phone.
- TheCash, on 06/10/2009, -5/+69Interesting, but they leave out the 32 gig iPhone 3G s under "capacity," and the chart assumes you're going to go the Unlimited Everything route. I have the 450 minute a month plan, with unlimited data and the thousand-something text message plan, so with an 85 dollar a month bill including taxes and fees, times 24, my total (including purchase cost) is $2,339.00.
Then again, I won't really nitpick, because it would be a pretty damn large and complicated comparison table if they included every possible configuration for each phone/plan. - Skurt, on 06/10/2009, -1/+59There's an App for that!
- capyoda, on 06/10/2009, -57/+115Grab the Palm Pre, save $1,200 over two years, and use the money to buy yourself 2-3 unlocked/jailbroken iPhone 3G S. Done.
- MerchantofPanic, on 06/10/2009, -1/+58It auto updates the number of child labourers making nike shoes at any given time.
- Darthyoshiboy, on 06/10/2009, -2/+57I might be crazy, but the G1 has a compass, no? If it doesn't I'd like to know by what witchcraft the variety of compass apps work through.
- opitica, on 06/10/2009, -11/+63ohhhhhh ahhhhh digital compass!
o wait http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZrVky-HN60
nike+ integration? i can't bury this article fast enough - Link459, on 06/10/2009, -5/+53I'll stick with my crappy little non-smart phone, thanks. $30 a month works for me.
- hnilsen, on 06/10/2009, -13/+61Nike integration?? Yeah, please mention a frickin shoe implant, don't take any notice to the open software OS on the Android.
Another point that should go on the list: "Does Jobs decide what you can do with this phone? YES NO NO"
Lame. - quomen, on 06/10/2009, -7/+51Why is Nike+ integration included? I would think something like multitasking is a more important feature to consider.
Another more important point of comparison would be # of apps available. iPhone is superior.
Full disclosure: I bought a Pre and love it! - deff, on 06/10/2009, -1/+41I'm switching from my iPhone 3g to a G1 tomorrow. The iPhone is great and all, but AT&T can lick my balls.
- kspanks04, on 06/10/2009, -3/+40Adding "Nike +" to that list is like adding "Apple logo".
- dborgir, on 06/10/2009, -2/+36Excuse my ignorance but what is Nike Integration and why would I care?
- GreenDots, on 06/10/2009, -4/+34Buried for being complete nonsense.
G1 takes SD cards so 1gb storage is a sham statistic.
Also digital compass is available for G1.
And why not compare with the HTC magic (G2?) instead of G1?
And what the hell is nike+ ? - robdiggity, on 06/10/2009, -3/+33IMHO > $1000 over the life of the device is not a small advantage. Qualifying a nearly 40% markup in TCO as small seems like quite a rationalization.
And there were *zero* apps available for the iPhone when it launched. I am curious to see how well the Palm emulator really works, and if other emulators might also be in the Pre's future. - Ford_Prefect2nd, on 06/10/2009, -3/+30Yeah, they mention nike, but not the physical keyboard, seemed a bit bias. I got a Blackberry, specifically for the physical keyboard. 42 words a minute, vs my iPod Touch 20, its a great touch screen keyboard, but its still not as good as a real one and that didn't make the comparison list?
- vagrantwade, on 06/10/2009, -5/+29Except I would never buy the plan they are using for the iPhone in that comparison...
- Chakat, on 06/10/2009, -0/+24Yes, it does have a compass.
- costumemaker, on 06/10/2009, -1/+25you arent a consumer whore? terrorist!!!
- Rapax, on 06/10/2009, -3/+25Judging from that chart...G1 looks like the obvious choice. Superior storage for one, and the open source community are the winning points. Unless of course you really need Nike+.
Beside, no mention of the physical keyboard, which is maybe THE most important feature on a real smartphone IMHO. And btw, where's the Touch HD or the Nokia N97? - nmezib, on 06/10/2009, -0/+20Well, they're trying to weigh sprint's excellent "simply everytyhing" plan with a similar comparison across the markets. sure, you could downgrade your iPhone's plan and pay less than or equal to Sprint's $99 simply everything... but then Sprint has ANOTHER plan that's unlimited data/texts/messaging/internets and 450 talk time minutes (the one that I have) for $70, a good deal across the board.
Yes, I admit, I am a bit of a Sprint fanboy. I know their coverage isn't as large as their competitors, but if it works well where you are (and they don't charge for roaming), does it really make a difference? that said, the iPhone 3Gs is pretty damn sexy and I would switch in a heartbeat if I wouldn't be paying so much extra... - mrfreeziexp, on 06/10/2009, -7/+26Sprint has a $99 plan that includes unlimited voice, data, and messaging? Wow. I'm not going to lie, the Palm Pre makes me regret my iPhone purchase.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 06/10/2009, -0/+15You do realize that this is a PHONE, right?
- judicar, on 06/10/2009, -6/+21Why do these articles always quote the unlimited plans? Hardly anyone uses them, especially since you get unlimited mobile-to-mobile with all the plans.
- lotec, on 06/10/2009, -1/+16So they include the 'bonus' of the Nike integration, however leave out the extra price of the chip for your shoe when tallying at the end.
Nice work! :-S - Makave22, on 06/10/2009, -1/+15I got a G1 and I pay $35.00 for unlimited Internet + Messaging, plus $40.00 for 300 minutes.
That $75 plus taxes is $8 that $83 plus insurance for just in case $88. - mac888, on 06/10/2009, -18/+31The iPhone's got the lower upfront cost with no rebate required. Although the Pre has a small TCO advantage, most folks won't think that deeply about it. Moreover, smartphones are all about the apps of which Palm has essentially none...
- wastern, on 06/10/2009, -0/+13They did highlight the open-sourceness of Android
- S4MF1SHER, on 06/10/2009, -0/+13I like this comparison chart. The thing that steers me away from AT&T and subsequently, the IPhone, is AT&Ts ridiculous prices for plans. It would cost me $20 more per month just for unlimited text. Sprint offers Everything Plans for $69.99 and $99.99 respectively. Over the long run, it just makes more sense for me to stay with Sprint and get a Pre. If AT&T does in fact adjust their pricing on things like data, text, etc, I think they will put themselves in a much better position to get more subscribers.
Another thing I think the Apple vs. Palm fanboys are missing is that the Pre is a great way to create competition, then innovation for other companies to step up, Apple included. Pre doesn't have the Apps that the IPhone has and may not ever come close, but I like all 3 of these phones and I hope they lead to further innovations and features so that all of us benefit in the long run.
/steps off soapbox - buddyman, on 06/10/2009, -2/+15Heh, i see what you did there. This year, my ifriend, this year. Have'nt you seen the WebOs ROM leak? It has video recording written all over Eos, which means in the following OTA updates, video capture will be unlocked for WebOs devices. Also has things like Pidgin, which gives you messaging on:
* Facebook
* AIM
* Bonjour
* Gadu-Gadu
* Google Talk
* Groupwise
* ICQ
* IRC
* MSN
* MySpaceIM
* QQ
* SILC
* SIMPLE
* Sametime
* XMPP
* Yahoo!
* Zephyr
- mediaphile, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12@buddyman:
Your point is valid, but you sound like a moron when you say things like "iTeenGirl" and "iCry." - heyimfromreddit, on 06/10/2009, -0/+12Uhh people with friends and/or a job?
- MxM111, on 06/10/2009, -2/+14Most of the people will not use unlimited voice plan from att. With roll overs, free nights, weekend, mobile to mobile and 450 anytime minutes with unlimited internet you pay only $69 per month. Comparing the phones by unlimited voice plan is stupid becasue very few people uses that.
But yeah, it would be nice if text messaging is included into ATT plans. - ifallen, on 06/10/2009, -1/+12it's the latest-and-greatest-thing-you-didn't-know-you-needed-till-yah-found it!

i dunno why they would make that big of a deal about it. I'm not that concerned with how many steps i've taken today...
if i get fat, i'll know. - sildude, on 06/10/2009, -5/+16Some people don't need their phone to be the latest achievement of modern portable technology. They choose to spend the leftover money on something that they find more important. I'm sorry I even have to point this out to your retarded dumbass.
- JigoroKano, on 06/10/2009, -1/+12Tell them to buy a pedometer watch.
- mmittimm, on 06/10/2009, -2/+12Unlimited plans are extremely popular. When I worked in electronics retail they were by far the most popular plans. I'm not sure where you got your "hardly anyone" figure...
- metaliq, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10I have a G1. I got it for $97 from walmart with a two year upgrade.
I activated the data in order to unlock the phone and then canceled it. I use the wifi (I have wifi at most places I go) without paying anything for data.
I really like the G1. Happy owner.

Good site for android stuff. Good forum, too. - twon, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10Man, I had a 1st gen iphone (hacked on Tmo) and switched to a G1.
I wish Google wouldn't buy into this notion that physical keyboards are becoming obsolete. I type 3-4 times as fast on my physical keyboard. Maybe for the casual typer, but i spend a large chunk of time chatting, texting, browsing and emailing from my phone and onscreen keyboards are just painful.
Maybe in a few years... - darkened, on 06/10/2009, -4/+14I have a G1 and with the 1.5 update it's basically a brand new phone. The only thing that still shocks me is the fact that applications still aren't installed to the SD card, however there is work being done on a 3rd party application that allows it. Gogogo open phone (kinda, you still need to root it for the application, but atleast you don't have your phone maker trying to brick your phone like Apple does)
- LLLSecretChimp, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10That's what they want you to think.
- yocouchdigga, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10This phone's so ***** amazing. Half the people I've met that own it, have no idea what it's capable of or have any idea what it will be capable of.
Cupcake was/is badass, the next upgrade should be really exciting. - TheFinaleofSeem, on 06/10/2009, -1/+11Probably because it's silly to compare unlimited plans across the board without including the cheapest rates as well. I've got the cheapest family plan on AT&T right now (wife has the other line) and we have over 2500 rollover minutes. We tossed in a whopping extra $5 to cover texts. Costs a bit over $100 a month.
- wastern, on 06/10/2009, -6/+16only 13 year old girls text enough to make that worth it
- rohit275, on 06/10/2009, -0/+10Everyone else has not moved on from the G1 as far as I know. If I'm not mistaken, it's still the only current Android phone available on the market in the US. I'd hardly call it outdated.
For the record, I am a G1 owner. - Gareth321, on 06/10/2009, -2/+11A ridiculously over-complicated and expensive form of a pedometer.
- SupaFlyTNT, on 06/10/2009, -5/+14You guys probably haven't used it; a pedometer counts steps taken (And is not for runners) and is fairly inaccurate (up to 50% off) and the Nike+ allows you to tweak your settings to make sure your getting fairly accurate numbers. It also allows you to track your runs and keeps track of your pace, calories and distances and keeps all of your runs on your personal webspace (A GPS device is a lot better (I have one) but costs 10X as much even with replacement sensors taken into account). You can also setup goals for yourself that are monitored by the Nike+ program so when you make them out in the real world you get a prompt letting you know which also adds some added incentive to run.
It's not earth shattering but if you are a casual regular runner it helps with the motivation and keeps it fun; the same as any other apple accessory. -
