- homer524, on 11/05/2009, -2/+36This sounds like a really cool idea. And with my $120 Monster HDMI cable I got at Best Buy last weekend, I'm all ready for some content streaming to my TV. Thank you Best Buy for having quality merchandise at reasonable prices.
- dk75eclipse, on 11/05/2009, -0/+25It's not only the merchandise, it's their Geek Squad service too! They came to my house, hooked up my PS3 to my tv, and set up the internet on it, for only $129! I don't know how I would've done it without them.
Thank you Best Buy for having quality service at reasonable prices. - TheInformer, on 11/05/2009, -0/+21The Geek Squad can install a new one for only $99. Bless them.
- bobburn1, on 11/05/2009, -0/+21They claim to be the #1 movie download service..yet I've never heard of it and will never use it.
- Fygee, on 11/05/2009, -0/+16You broke my sarcasm meter. I demand a new one.
- sleepy35758, on 11/05/2009, -3/+17Like any other thing at Bestbuy it'll probably be way over priced.
- TheFuzzyOne, on 11/05/2009, -0/+10You got ripped off.
- Maddoktor2, on 11/05/2009, -0/+8Nah, he's just another lame troll with a chip on his shoulder - a quick glance at his comment history bears that out.
- Maddoktor2, on 11/05/2009, -1/+9Problem:
Best Buy is adding as yet unknown and untested proprietary software possibly containing crippling DRM malware to all internet capable devices they sell.
Solution:
Don't purchase flat-panel TVs, Blu-ray players, personal computers or mobile phones from Best Buy.
Problem solved. - Fygee, on 11/05/2009, -0/+8What's worse is that they'll probably charge customers who don't want it a fee to remove it.
They'll call it something like a "Device Optimization Service" or something. - Maddoktor2, on 11/05/2009, -2/+10Ever heard of SONY, moron?
- RidesAPaleHorse, on 11/05/2009, -0/+7So are they ordering special models from the manufacturer with this software preinstalled, or are they opening all of these devices and installing the software at their warehouses or stores? If the latter, I don't think the devices can legally be sold as "new".
The last thing I want to do is buy a laptop that some Geek Squad slob has been using and have to clean the Cheetos dust off the keyboard. - bjornski, on 11/05/2009, -1/+8Sounds like newchap works for Best Buy.
- Fygee, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6No, because I shouldn't have to pay for stupid ***** that the vendor puts on a device that is not manufactured by them.
Let's not forget that retail stores do make money off of mark up, hence the whole reason they make a profit and exist in the first place. It's not like they're giving things away for free or far below cost and then recouping the cost by adding "revenue creating" software and features that impede the general functionality of the device. - Fygee, on 11/05/2009, -0/+6You know, what disturbs me the most is that I used to work at the Geek Squad at store 122 in Vegas for almost three years...and I'd hear customers genuinely talk like that.
I suppose now that you mention it...$99 isn't TOO bad for a sarcasm meter install. - DirtyVicar, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6I followed the link to the Associated Press story. The Associated Press should not be in the business of distributing corporate press releases. And shame on NPR for jumping on the bandwagon.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story ... - palmer, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5This headline immediately reminded me of Circuit City's attempt to rip off consumers with media: DIVX.
- jordanlgta, on 11/05/2009, -2/+7***** BEST BUY
I don't know if it's still $35 to install a stick of memory, but that's ridiculous.
I bought my television recently from Costco. Employees are paid fairly. Good selection. Great CEO. Got a Samsung 46" for $400 less than Best Buy's price, and no it was not lacking any of the technical features that the Best Buy model had...trust me...I did the research. - iPlunder, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5People still use best buy? That's like going to gamestop to trade in used games and get a deal.
- Barackalypse, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5At $3.99 you only have to watch 3 a month for Netflix to come out cheaper, plus you'll have instant access to over something like 15,000 Netflix on demand movies.
- txballer, on 11/05/2009, -4/+9Their store prices have been atrocious since Circuit City went out of business and looks its working wonders for them because the Best Buy I visit to pass time at has more employees than customers now.
Greedy pricks. - dpknc84, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4This is why I'm happy that hhgregg has come into my market recently (Cary/Raleigh/Durham, NC) and are basically planting themselves in all the locations that used to be Circuit City stores.
Granted I do most of my techie shopping through newegg and the like, but it's still nice to be able to grab something when you just can't wait for shipping. - Samadhi007, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4What a scatterbrained, horribly written article. I don't agree with this at all, provided it's true, but I hardly believe Best Buy would be able to accomplish this considering how many different vendors they get their products from. They would have to convince every single vendor to pre-install the software before the unit leaves the factory, or manually do it with every device that comes in to the store. Either way it seems completely unfeasible.
- Barackalypse, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4The real problem is that every single movie here costs $1.99 or more (most of the new releases I see are $3.99), which is overpriced considering I can rent them at any Redbox machine for $1, or for $8.99 a month get Netflix and have them delivered to my door.
- txballer, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5I prefer to call it greed and poor business planning. I'm sure they'll start begging for their own bailout after they've driven off most of their customers to cheaper online retailers.
Speaking of bad business planning, when the economy took a dump Circuit City decided to build/open new stores. ...Idiots. - twiztidsinz, on 11/05/2009, -2/+5You forgot the step with the useless bitching that accomplishes nothing....
Oh wait. You went for a REAL solution.
If half the people who bitched that "ZOMG WORSTBUY SUX!!!" didn't shop there, they'd probably be making a dent in sales. - TheFounder, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4Anyone know who CinemaNow 's PR guy is? Clearly he can get the AP and NPR to publish press releases for them labeled as news stories. Seriously that is someone I GOT to hire.
I figure next time I want to shaft someone, I can get all the positive press I want, hell.. I can get the news outlets to publish my stories straight up.
-- Bernie Madoff - TheInformer, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4The problem is that the great unwashed masses that were educated in the U.S. public school system will say "uhhhhh dere is a Best Buy store. Dey sell computers. We buy one dere now so we can get home fast to watch American Idol."
- bjornski, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3I bought mine for $.25 on Amazon (yes, 25 cents).
Shipping cost more than the cable did, and it works GREAT. - neverender, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3talking about bloat....could they add any more to that web site? between the ustream feed, twitter conversations, polls, sponsors, linkbacks, digg widget i hardly noticed the linked article. my favorite is that horrible toolbar on the bottom that links everything i just mentioned (and possibly more).
- starscream45, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2I like Sam's better.
- CaptOblivious, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2I once saw 2 guys drag one of those $500+ outdoor kitchens stainless steel grills back into the store. I gotta tell ya, this thing was dis-gust-ing! there was cooked on grease hanging off it in 4 inch stalactites with corresponding stalagmites below them.
I would have been ashamed to have anyone see anything that filthy and ill maintained even vaguely associated with me!
My curiosity got the better of me so I decided that I had forgotten my card and wandered along behind them and go in the customer service line.
So, it turns out the grill was 11 months old and apparently these "gourmands" couldn't get it to light up anymore. It was pretty obvious that the problem was that the igniter was underneath a three inch layer of grease.
However, the person doing the customer service thing was amazingly cool, and gave them a replacement grill, same model no questions asked. No hassle, she didn't even wrinkle her nose at it.
I was stunned, I would have told them to go buy a pressure washer or run it through the high pressure car wash and not be such pigs next time.
You can say whatever you want about the membership thing but the customer service at costco can't be beat.
I asked the rep if that was normal and she said while the grill was pretty ridiculous their full satisfaction or return/refund/exchange policy covers it. She kind of indicated that they would clean it up and use it for the employees so at least it wasn't a total waste.
And ya with the % back on my purchases I get more than my membership fee back every year and the prices on a lot of their stuff is better than anything other than true wholesale. - TonyTheTerrible, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2***** you Best Buy! Die already.
- CaptOblivious, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2monoprice.com and weep.
- drex8, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3And Costco has great return policies too.
- bjornski, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3True. But even lame trolls can work a cash register.
- Maddoktor2, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2If he has that attitude at work, he won't remain employed for very long.
- itinerantspectr, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2I haven't given a dollar to Best Buy in a very long time.
- anttheman101, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2OMG i work at best buy and they try to get me to sell all this crap on top of everything..like the black tie and napster with eevrything, i just give the customer what they want and if they ask me if its lower anywhere else ill tell them the truth...***** YEA..now ill probably get annoyed by managers if theirs not enought cinema w/es sold throughout the day..***** hate workin here
- regeya, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Wow, that sounds really terrible. No thank you!
How about this, providers: Is there any way you could come up with a service that'll work with my MythTV box? If so, I'm all yours. - Jaydo, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1The only way this would work is if the manufactures installed it prior or if it came as an addon to the package for the owner to install or for G.S. to install post transaction.
There's no other feasible way to do it, it's not like they have the resources to install it manually on everything in the store before they sell it. - homer524, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1sarcasm...?
- jordanlgta, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2With the money I save, yes. I know you don't have a membership to Costco and, therefore, you are skeptical, but it is worth it. That's all there is to it. I'm getting 2% back from all of my yearly purchases. It will more than cover the cost of my membership.
- ngmcs8203, on 11/05/2009, -3/+4Capitalism at work.
- rolf, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1So I suppose all the good, cheap businesses (amazon, monoprice, newegg) is Capitalism not at work?
- CaptOblivious, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1@ newchap Your opinion is such as it is.
However, their attitude towards their customers DID result in my being a costco customer for life.
So a two ***** with huge balls cost them a little profit and a thousand reasonable customers (per two ***** more or less) keeps their stores full enough that they actually need 26 checkout stations and they all have lines.
I think they understand their business better than you do.
Perhaps you need to contemplate the fact that "customer service" and "profit margin" are not the same thing and the first can lead to the second but it will never work the other way. - homer524, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Well they only charged me $120 for the first one. The next two I got (for my PS3 and DVR) only cost $110 each, so it was a good deal. Like I said before, Best Buy has all the quality merchandise at reasonable prices.
- pbrooks100, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1If the vendor loads the crapware, it will likely be given a new model number. This makes the Best Buy product different than the one you buy sans crapware at (your favorite store here).
Best Buy normally price-matches if the model number is identical. Smart move, Best Buy! - Ev3nt372, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Keep stacking on that bloatware! For every crappy slow installation of Windows from Dell/Toshiba/Sony is another customer willing to pay me for a complete reformat+ antivirus+ office.
Also, even if you uninstall every piece of bloatware off of Dell for some reason the Vista still ***** up when it gets updated so from now on I am never trusting preinstalled operating system. No matter how fast they load or run apps to begin with there will always be problems down the road so might as well nuke and pave right off the bat. -
