- Inceptious, on 11/04/2009, -0/+22The milstone in europe gets pinch zoom, while the droid in the us doesn't. Both still have multitouch. This is probably a PATENT ISSUE with apple.
- RoroCo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+16Is it possible for Gizmodo to do a review without mentioning the iPhone in every paragraph? I - for one - am very underwhelmed by the buttons-on a-black-screen iPhone - and especially AT&T. I would much rather prefer a review based on the merits of the Droid vs how it stacks up with the iPhone in every aspect.
- Inceptious, on 11/04/2009, -0/+13Most of the issue seem software related? As opposed to what? ANDROID IS SOFTWARE. OF COURSE THE ISSUES WITH ANDROID ARE SOFTWARE RELATED.
- xerograde, on 11/03/2009, -0/+10Looks great! Media player is still a shame though. Looking forward to this, that is if it ever comes to my G1. Even if it doesn't officially I'm sure Cyanogen will port it eventually.
- krisrm, on 11/04/2009, -0/+10I don't really agree with the author's need to sync music natively. Do we really need another piece of software to get files from one place to another? I get along just fine with the phone seen as a removable device; all the syncing is handled by WMP; I'm sure iTunes (somewhere) has an option to sync music with a drive, no?
That being said, yeah - the music and video player on the device itself could use a redo :p - dagamer34, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9Actually, completely wrong.
It's $30 for personal accounts and $45 for business accounts. Same as with AT&T.
http://www.gearlog.com/2009/11/personal_droid_data ... - jv2k, on 11/04/2009, -0/+9I agree 100%. Whenever a computer program pops up to sync my photos/music/movies with a device I shut that crap down and just do it myself manually. It's simple drag and drop and it's actually quicker and easier to do.
- darkened, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8Almost every single compliant in this article can be solved by installing a better application from the market. There's a reason the default Android tools are bare-bones because Android development shouldn't be wasted on them.
A few of their major complaints are non existent for users that actually upgrade their phone to Cyanogen. Like getting multi-touch support for the browser, exchange support etc. - dagamer34, on 11/04/2009, -1/+9You do realize that AT&T technically charges $15 a month for Exchange support as well, though I'm sure people skirt that fee and sign up anyway.
- linuxlucas, on 11/04/2009, -1/+8Am I the only one that thought, how many notification icons do you need!?
- Elohir, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6I'm developing an Android app now. It's strange to be programming in Java again but it's do-able and it's fun to see it working and interfacing with all of my existing .Net web services.
- BabySinister, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6why do people think regular users will have trouble with dragging and dropping music on their android phone? its been that way for basically every mp3 player besides the ipod and tbh the main reason i hear people complaining about the ipod is the lack of drag and drop (cause most people i know dont have 16gb max music libraries)
- dagamer34, on 11/04/2009, -1/+7Media features need to be upgraded.
- Mateo2, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6Android has had media music syncing since 1.0. This article is just false, in that respect. Windows Media Player has been able to sync the G1 since day one, and probably the vast majority of music applications can sync it easily. The guy wrote a whole section on a non-problem.
I agree that video should be done better, natively. - Mateo2, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6iTunes doesn't sync anything other than apple products.
- iritegood, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5But you see, this article is about Android. It is not a review of any specific phone. Features can be disabled/enabled accordingly to each phone. The hardware is not the limiting factor, when no specific hardware is mentioned.
- paulsmith288, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5"Want Exchange support on the new Droid? "
NO!
and Im glad its cheaper as a result. - BabySinister, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4can you explain what its downside is? as a european i have no clue when ill be able to get my hands on a Droid but im really loving what ive read so far.
the hardware keyboard is incredibly important to me, so this comment has got me thinking.
i would love to read what leaves you wanting so i can incorporate that information in my decisionmaking. - canthraxp, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4"There is no syncing, no easy way to get your music library onto your phone. How are normal people supposed to figure this out?"
Who the ***** wrote this article? Does he have Steve Job's dick on his mouth as of writing?
My father knows how to copy+paste files into pen drives, and pretty much anything just fine. He recently got an iPhone, he didn't know what iTunes was (I had to install it myself), he didn't knew how to sync with it (I had to do that too). Seriously, it's way more intuitive to have the thing as a mass storage than having to install another software to do that. - 1nhuman, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3In Europe we don't get Google Maps, but some other crappy app instead. Might be the reasson for maps app not supporting it. Not sure.
- darkened, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3AKA Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair.
- dootzky, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3i love my HTC Magic Android.. looking forward to future development, and since I'm a web developer, I just might try and see if I can make some cool Android app or widget, just for the fun of it! :))
GO ANDROID! :)) - krisrm, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3Hmmm; you'd think the "world's leading music software" would sync with simple removable drives... guess not. Maybe Apple should provide some basic functionality with their software, rather than leaving it up to device-manufacturers to develop middle-man software to do the same thing.
- fireashes, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3I have a htc hero and I am pretty much impressed by android features. The multi-tasking and notification is really great. Full multi touch and zoom is also great. I kind of agree that music sync is little bit lacking. And while changing the phone it did not take addressbook from my old phone to the new phone using Bluetooth.
Otherwise I am pretty much happy with it.
Any legal way to do teethering. It can share the wifi with my laptop. But not the 3g - Mateo2, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3it's not probably a patent issue, it IS a patent issue. that's why i don't get why people criticize android for not having it. they aren't allowed to have it. just because other companies violate patents doesn't mean google should/can.
- ThirdPrize, on 11/04/2009, -1/+3iPhone is a phone. Android is an OS. An iPhone will look and feel like an iPhone and probably be pretty compatible from now till it is replaced. Each Android phone will look and feel different. Differing screen and capabilities will make the devs life a bit harder. Just wait till AT&T decides to start preinstalling crapware on it to make some money back.
- puzzud, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2The way the article shows two screenshots side by side definitely makes the notifications bar side by side. But looking at it and being one who owns an Android phone, they are all pretty useful. However, the ones on the left are always like wack-a-mole... you try to get rid of them as much as possible (they are pretty temporary).
- smoger, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2so just a few months after Google released their icon guidelines to developers, they're pulling them out from under our feet? ugh.
- jv2k, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2They promised us flash and it seems to be heavily integrated into 2.0 so it will probably make it's way to us.
- supersonicjim, on 11/04/2009, -1/+3The development tools are rather good, shame it is in Java though.
- BabySinister, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2notificiation icons are the single most important thing on a phone since most of the time youll be pulling it out of your pocket to check whether you missed calls or messages.
- jcaino, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2The hardware keyboard is super flat and there's nearly no distinction between keys. I've dealt with small buttons before (Samsung u740) and think they would have done well to include a ridge or even a bit of a gap between keys. Would provide a better tactile feedback for the physical keyboard.
And no, jv2k, they probably would have been better served to just leave the physical keyboard off. The on-screen keyboard (in portrait and landscape mode) is actually quite nice.
The other bother is that the home screen won't display in landscape mode without the keyboard being open. Extremely annoying, especially when you are working in another app in landscape mode and want to open something else up. - plague, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2I run CyanogenMod on my phone, and while I agree that it's better, the average user will look at you with a blank stare if you try to explain what it is and how to install it. Any complaint that is fixed only by rooting is very relevant because most consumers expect it to work right out of the box.
"I can't say Android 2.0 is ready for your mom yet, but it's definitely ready for anybody reading this." This is a perfect summary of Android right now. - jv2k, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2Better than no keyboard at all.
- inagoodcause, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2Android counters the great gaming advantage that iPhone enjoyed.
- plaguester, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Absolutely correct. Any decent music application (i.e. not iTunes) can sync with a standard mass storage device. See DoubleTwist, Windows Media Player, Winamp, Banshee, Rythmbox, Amarok... etc. Even if you don't use an actual music program on your computer, you can still have any OS sync a folder on your PC with a folder on your device.
- jv2k, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1I don't get it, what's the appeal of music syncing? It isn't any easier than just dragging all your music from one folder to another.
I hate it when I plug a camera or mp3 player into windows and these annoying programs pop up. In the time it takes for this crap to locate and scan all my media I can just drag it into the device manually. - BabySinister, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1no but you see iphone! we are all lazy sobs that cant be assed to actually make a phone our own! it better work right out of the box so that when a bud comes over with the same phone it doesnt matter if i accidentally take his instead of my own.
- jv2k, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Yea they just left a lot of crap unchecked. You can easily clear all of them.
I like that the notification icons are there when I miss calls and whatnot. - jv2k, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Neither the video nor the music player are crappy. He called them "ugly" which is an odd criticism for a seek bar with play/pause and forward/back button.
- BabySinister, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2since the iPhone is setting the standard in smartphones nowadays (whether we like it or not we have to acknowledge this) it makes perfect sense to compare it to the iPhone.
note how i havent even started to mention it being offered as an "iPhonekiller" - jv2k, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1True but it's not like people would be unfamiliar with downloading a new program to handle movies. Meridian and nsw player are pretty easy to find.
- jv2k, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1AT&T? what the hell are you going on about.
Also the different hardware requirements are these huge problems that you are making them out to be. It's not hard to program for different resolutions and the hardware isn't that far off yet. - Lemon, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1How many notification icons do you need? As many as you leave turned on!
- AndrewDB, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Man they need to release the HTC Developer version of 2.0 EARLY so we can see if it fixes one of the known issues with 1.5 and 1.6 :(
- BruceCLin, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1"Any legal way to do teethering."
aNetShare - plaguester, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1The best part about using a non-Apple MP3 player (besides the superior sound quality) is being forced to use something other than iTunes. It is one of the most bloated music apps I've ever seen. I want my music to be played in the background without being a resource hog.
As long as the devices are seen as standard removable devices, any decent music application will sync without a problem. I use Banshee on Ubuntu 9.10 and it syncs perfectly with my G1. - BabySinister, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1jcaino, thanks for the information.
i currently have a HTC TyTn (old lol) and the keyboard works great. the keys are somewhat rounded at the top so they have a good tactile feel.
how odd that you cant display in landscape without the keyboard, doesnt it have a gyroscope?
i guess im going to have to wait for it to hit europe and make sure ill try before i buy. - dpcdomino, on 11/03/2009, -3/+4Interesting take. Most of the issues seem software related. I am sure the blogsphere croud will be able to "tweak" these issues and make them work like the multi-touch. I do wonder if these issue, especially the music synch and the movie playback missing features, will deter the general public from embracing the phone.
...less units out there means less development... - fandyllic, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1I don't see how you can say Android 2.0 is way more usable with a "Crappy music and video player". There is definitely alot of fanboy in this article.
