I had to go through two of those ***** phones (don't ask) before I finally bought my jesus phone in December. Best $400 bucks I could spend.

Hit or miss, I guess...my Razr went through a full wash and is still going.

...plus a Li-ion battery dying after 3 years isn't unique to a Razr.

I remember thinking the Razr was the coolest phone ever when it came out. How quickly things can change in three years...

The old razr isnt so good.... The new Razr V3xx (better battery, camera and speaker) and the razr V9 aren't too bad although the V9 is way over priced.

I guess the only thing left to do is buy an iPhone.

Why don't we all have computers built into our brains yet? This would eliminate the need for feeble cellular devices.

i remember when that thing came out back in 2005 it was like $600 then a few months later it was down to $200 and recently you could get it for free with a service plan, anyways iPhone FTW!

I think I have the V3C and I get MAYBE 20 minutes of talk time. Other than that, it fits in my pocket nicely.

My Razr is doing just fine. Maybe I just take care of my stuff. Although, I don't expect somebody from Gizmodo to care about anything that isn't made by Apple.

Maybe its the carrier version of the RAZR she had. I had a cingular version for over two years and loved it, never had a problem, until I beat it up enough to kill the headset speaker.

I've had a RAZR for about, 2 and a half years, and frankly, I'm sick of it. The only thing stopping from from getting a replacement is the 3G iPhone. Just though I'd add my two cents.

Haven't used a RAZR myself. Before it was released, I had already vowed never to get another Motorola phone again. One example of Motorola stupidity: When you turn the phone to silent mode, it makes a loud, annoying beep! Gee, when might somebody want to silence their phone? Maybe when they're in a movie theater or a meeting? It's these sort of shenanigans that make me question of they do any usability testing at all with their products.

Years ago a friend of mine would have this little envy competition. I had a brand new HTC 8125, packed with tons of games and even Tom Tom via bluetooth GPS. My friend had a (by far inferior) RAZR. Every single person that we'd run into would be like "WHOA YOU HAVE A RAZR?!? NICE!"...while I'd watch Youtube on my slide out HTC and wonder why the hell people were drooling over his rather simple device.
Well, justice is mine.
...Oh wait, maybe not...now my friend has an iPhone and now I have the new (and by far superior) HTC Tilt. Sigh.
Moral to story: If you want to impress, buy the phone with the strongest ad campaign.

I've had a Razr for ages and it's honestly not that bad. However, it did take me 2 years to bother turning off that ridiculously annoying BEEP that it makes when it's running out of batteries. I used to beep once every 10 minutes for 2 years. I really don't understand how telling the user that the battery is running low by using more battery by generating an enormous BEEP every 10 minutes is a good idea. Do all Motorola phones do that?

the best thing about the razr is how thin it is. fits right in my jeans pocket with no problems.

but at the moment the phone is suffering from extreme battery problems. works fine as a phone though. i'm likely to replace it with an iphone or a blackberry at some point in the next few months.

Until Motorola removes that ridiculous beep-of-death, or makes it a software option (not something I have to hack to disable), I will never touch another Motorola now that I have my W580i.

I got a RAZR V3xx last summer. It's solid, thin, takes great pictures, and has a decent mobile browser. RAZR's are actually good phones.

The interface is a can of ass, too. Took me forever to remember that the calculator was found under "Settings." WTF? My old phone was a...I dunno...a Samsung or something...that had a really nice alarm clock function that took about a second to program when I was traveling and woke me up every time. The RAZR will sit there feebly alarming for half an hour before I hear it sometimes and it's a PITA to program quickly when I'm too sleepy to do anything but sleep.

I'll probably opt for a 3G iPhone, as well. For all that I find annoying about them (the size, the fragility, the cult, etc), I love the interface. Everything is easy to find and organized logically. And they seem to be very quick and responsive.

1. When the battery is dying it either:
A) (ringer on) Beeps obnoxiously every 2 minutes so you sound like a jackass and/or can't sleep. This only drains the battery faster.
B) (vibrate) Vibrates obnoxiously every 2 minutes for full 5 second intervals. I bet this really helps conserve your remaining battery!
C) (ringer off) Allows you to miss every call you get.

2. The software is written by a *****.
-You have a missed call, you would think hitting send might actually dial that ***** number.
-You missed a call, let's beep every 2 seconds cuz you're an asshole!
-Your phone has a video feature, good ***** luck finding it!
-You accidentally created a voice recording somehow, don't worry, it's impossible to delete and will forever eat up memory.
-Wanna send a text message with 1 or 2 numbers in it. You can hold down a number but it won't do *****. ***** you! Switch to number mode, hit the one number, switch to text mode, that was easy!
-You changed the ringer to full volume so you don't miss a call? Well it changed itself to off. ***** you!
-Your ringer is going off in a bad situation. You jam every button accessible on the outside of the phone to make it shut up but you missed the volume control. ***** you! It's still ringing.
-Wanna customize your menu quick-keys (what the 4 directional arrows do?). ***** you! We know better than you.
-I could continue... but you get the point.

3. It's weak as *****. Hope you don't have over 5 contacts or it's taking you 10 seconds to get your address book open.

... So with that said... I want a new phone. I want a cool internet phone but I'm not switching to AT&T. ***** me.

Poor guy, tried to make a post on my phone recommendation, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be showing up on Gizmodo and no error message. Either it's under approval or poor usability. Since I took the time to write it up, I'll post it here. I hate my effort going to waste...

I very much pity you, I could smell a bad phone a mile away and that's why I never got the Razr myself. Also having owned a T68(i), if you want a phone that can do what that can do, but better, I'd recommend to you the Motorola Ming A1200 (yes, it's a Motorola). You'll have a hard time getting your hands on it outside of China, it was designed by their China team and is truly an awesome phone.

Can copy & paste, runs on Linux... crashed less than a handful of times in nearly 2 years.

My Ming is now nearly 2 years old, after so many drops, it still looks very close to new.

The candybar version of the Ming is the Motorola E6. I have heard they are coming out with a Ming descendant in late this year or next. The iPhone might be a good option in a generation or two, but so far it's not suitable for my purposes.
