- gamebittk, on 01/14/2009, -2/+38Wow. The interface looks really slick. Between the Pre and the Storm, the iPhone seems to be getting some serious competition! Keep 'em coming... I'm due for a new phone.
- 00dread, on 01/14/2009, -1/+30Pre- is a PREfix. I joined Digg to tell you that.
- jakem1, on 01/14/2009, -3/+30To be fair, that's what did it for the iPhone because it certainly wasn't features.
- googooly, on 01/14/2009, -0/+27I have a storm and believe me its not good. Its nowhere as smooth as iphone.
- SteveMax, on 01/14/2009, -0/+25@freediverx
At least we know that Palm can COPY & paste... - Csaliture, on 01/14/2009, -0/+20Im hope this turns out to be a great and innovative OS. It would be nice to have some real competition for the iphone and make apple fix some of its short comings.
- kashk5, on 01/14/2009, -0/+20I wish the iPhone would switch between horizontal and vertical that quickly. Application switching is also pretty neat. I wish they had shown how you zoom on webpages. With the iPhone there are multi-touch gestures, what does the Pre have?
- CoreyTamas, on 01/14/2009, -0/+19The Storm is no iPhone competitor. Check out these reviews.

But the Pre? I like what I'm seeing there. - freediverx, on 01/14/2009, -5/+21The BB Storm is an absolute joke. Every single review has completely trashed it.
But I really don't get the excitement over the Pre. What is so great about a phone that, finally, two years after the original iPhone's release, ALMOST manages to copy Apple's interface elements and smoothness, in a dull, bulky package, with no decent music/video app, no software support for direct hardware access, and for an expected price between $300-400 vs. the iPhone's $199?
Oh, and I forgot the clincher... while the iPhone is stuck with service from AT&T, with the Palm Pre you're stuck with service from... SPRINT! The company widely known for offering the most infuriatingly terrible customer service in America. LOL - PacoBell, on 01/14/2009, -0/+16It's inductive coupling. Just like how your electric toothbrush works.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+13SCIENCE!
- shuffer, on 01/14/2009, -1/+12It's really nice to see Palm getting it together with this. The iPhone has the best OS at the moment (missing key features aside), but from this short demo you can see that this is slick and responsive.
BUT.
The quick rendering on the scrolling web page is likely due to the page being preloaded. The iPhone only shows that grey chessboard when you take the network by surprise; it too scrolls like this once the entire page is loaded into RAM.
This looks pricey. Palm are making noises about the chips in this thing being on a par with laptop components. This means an Atom-a-like with severe portable GPU and these things are extremely expensive.
Palm has a big bucket and small feet of late and this needs to be released as soon as possible. Apple are likely to change the chipset in the iPhone this year, or release a new model entirely, which could raise the bar even higher.
Having said all that, I could see myself going back to Palm with this. - CoreyTamas, on 01/14/2009, -1/+12I don't know the answers to your questions. I'm just throwing some possibilities out there. I could be wrong.
- Physical keyboard vs. virtual one. A lot of people prefer that.
- Unrestricted use to 3rd party apps.
- More reasonable or flexible mobile contract.
- Palm is traditionally very good at supporting developers.
- The hands-on shows how the Palm interface (arguably) runs smoother than the iPhone's.
- Form factor is very similar to the iPhone, so there's not much difference there.
- It just may support Flash and allow copy & paste.
I've never held or used a Pre, so this is just stuff I'm suggesting might come into play. We'll see, I suppose. - jakem1, on 01/14/2009, -0/+10@freediverx: That's a bold claim considering how the iPhone's main menu is a direct copy of the old Palm OS Programs menu.
I think we can all agree that most phone UIs are likely to be similar. I also think the Pre has its fair share of unique UI features and, according to the video, it seems to have improved on those that the iPhone does well. - specialk2hz, on 01/14/2009, -2/+10I love these people who are drinking the apple kool-aid... they some how have been tricked in to thinking physical keyboards are worse then pretend screen keyboards.....
- Eric1285, on 01/14/2009, -2/+10But you can type on a screen?
- farfromsubtl, on 01/14/2009, -13/+20"Super fast transitions, super smooth scrolling...Palm looks to have a winner here."
LOL, is that all it takes to have a winner in the phone market? - dbbblondon, on 01/14/2009, -1/+7I think we have just seen the first true competitor to the iPhone!
It's been a long time coming - Kelmon, on 01/14/2009, -1/+7One waits to see what the applications are like that you'll be able to buy/download for this phone. As much as I like the idea of easy development with HTML, JavaScript and XML, somehow I don't think that this is going to deliver sophisticated applications such as those that can be written for other platforms. Call me suspicious, but this sounds more like Widgets/Gadgets. Further, it doesn't sound that far different to the web applications that Apple originally touted for the iPhone and who were rightly lambasted.
- infraspace, on 01/14/2009, -0/+6Nope, it's a pinch-out/in multi-touch gesture. It's been shown in a few videos online already.
Here's a tape of the CES presentation. I'm pretty sure it's in there somewhere:
http://www.palm.com/us/products/phones/pre/palm-pr ... - wastern, on 01/14/2009, -2/+8that swiping is multi-tasking. no closing and app, opening another, closing it, then opening up the first one just to check something quickly
- Jonmad17, on 01/14/2009, -0/+5I've been the biggest iphone fanboy for the longest now. I consider it the best phone on the market at the moment. But the Palm Pre might make me change my mind. I have absolutely LOVED everything i have seen from the phone so far, especially being able to use multiple applications at once. My only quibble with the phone is the way it looks. The iphone is definitely a sexier phone.
- googooly, on 01/14/2009, -2/+6anyone knows how does this wireless charging works ?
- Hamletlere, on 01/14/2009, -1/+5@CoreyTamas:
"- The hands-on shows how the Palm interface (arguably) runs smoother than the iPhone's."
Actually, it looks like there was a slight delay between the start of the movement of the thumb and the start of the movement on the screen. If accurately displayed in the movie, this would irritate me as a user.
The interface shows promise, though. I don't like the look of the phone, personally, and have no desire for a teeny-tiny keyboard, but the interface could definitely be a contender. - jocknerd, on 01/14/2009, -1/+4Thats one of the reasons it has potential. Its not the original outdated Palm OS. Its a brand new OS.
- Linh, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3the storm is an utter joke compared to the iphone. the pre... looks like the first serious blow to the iphone. I just never thought Palm would be able to come up with something out their asses. Now only if we can get this over to verizon too asap...
- minhaferzz, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3Actually it does support Exchange Activesync. It's on Palm's website.
- CoreyTamas, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3Looks really good and whetted my appetite. I would have liked to see more than a minute of fiddling, though. Looking forward to a *really* in-depth hands-on video.
- PacoBell, on 01/14/2009, -5/+8It's the same. I'm not sure how Palm isn't being sued out of existence by now, but yay while it lasts! =)
- Volatile36, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3It looks great, I just hope Palm will finally take care of a few of the lingering issues with their products. The last two Palms I've owned had some sort of electrical issue, not to mention the outdated OS, but it looks like the new OS is going to be great.
Love the full keyboard and the cordless charger, btw. - dochall, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3If this does a full exchange integration - like tasks and being able to schedule a meeting on the device I'll be sorely tempted.
Who knew that Palm would be back. Next comes Psion - freediverx, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3I hope it comes with a regular charger too. Otherwise how are you going to charge this thing in your car or when you're traveling? No advantage to "cordless" charging when you're away form your house.
- freediverx, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3Yes, and it's great to have that competition coming from a company so well known for rapid innovation and software development,
- PacoBell, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3They said it's supposed to intuit your actions, so I suppose it best stands for "precognitive", "predetermination", etc.
- manicleek, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3My touchscreen phone just uses a double tap on the are of the page you want to zoom in on, maybe the same for this?
- freeridstylee, on 01/14/2009, -0/+3I was in Best Buy the other day, they had an EEE w/the atom processor and a gig of ram for $200 w/no subsidies. You'd think Palm could hit that price point with then normal $200 subsidy they get from the phone company. But then again I'm being hopeful. A lot of people need to own "the best" and by the best I mean the most expensive. Palm may capitalize on this.

Nightmare continues for America's worst company:
Now Sprint Nextel laying off 4000 in desperate move
http://communities-dominate.blogs.com/brands/2008/ ... - camiller, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Actually, I think the wireless charger is an option.
- ccaazz, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2agree with everything u said, except that the iphone is sexier! - the palm pre is far better looking, i previously commented on digg saying i would only get an iphone with 32 gigs of storage, but the palm pre looks so good, i'll be willing to trade down to 8 gigs of inbuilt memory XD - unless a 32 gig iphone comes out first in which case, i might not be able to wait ^^
- ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2That's what I just said. And I don't know if developers will be as eager to jump on board with the new Palm OS. The app support is a dealbreaker for me.
- jakem1, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2For once we agree mrBitch.
- inactive, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Well now it's a Phone. Not that it was a suffix in the first place.
- ryantiet, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2It does have flash
- ChildeRoland420, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2I pay $34/month (after taxes/fees) for 500 minutes, unlimited texts/picture-mail, unlimited nights/weekends starting a 7, and unlimited 3g internet surfing.
Sprint's not so bad for/to me. - Baryn, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2The ultimate smartphone...
- Joffroi, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Yes it does
- enivid, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2Even worst.pineappleosaurus.ever?
- camiller, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2well, my aging Palm TX doesn't require me to use the Palm Desktop since I've set it up to sync with outlook. I haven't launched the palm desktop in around eleven months.
My understanding is that from the start the pre is designed to sync with your online sources, contacts in various places like gmail or social media sites, various mail and IM sources etc. I'm not sure if it even syncs with the desktop at all. - jakem1, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3I'm not precious about this but I think it's funny that I can be dugg down for asking an honest question and I still haven't received an answer.
- SteveMax, on 01/14/2009, -1/+3"with the Palm Pre you're stuck with service from... SPRINT!"
That means nothing at all to me. It will be availabe here as an unlocked GSM phone (I never bought a locked phone, and don't intend to) that can be used on all four networks here in Brazil (five if you count Aeiou, which is only in São Paulo city). The fact that a phone is only available in Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile or whatever in the USA means nothing at all to the remaining 6 billion people in the world (as long as it's available in GSM) -
