- icexe, on 11/26/2008, -1/+46Things I NEVER skimp on:
- A good mattress. Nothing, and I mean nothing, makes you more alert and productive during the day than a good night's sleep on a good mattress.
- A good monitor. Spend the extra $150 on a really good monitor, it will more than make up for all the migraines and blurry vision you've been suffering with all these years. - Lynx77777, on 11/27/2008, -2/+346. Whores, I skimped on a whore once and can verify it did indeed 'bite me on the ass later'.
- jggube, on 11/26/2008, -1/+16Whoa, nice story. Thanks for the reminder: I need to upgrade my Ram.
- WiretapStudios, on 11/27/2008, -0/+9'A used or refurbished lens is always cheaper than a brand new one.'
Isn't this pretty much true for anything? - ToastPop, on 04/17/2009, -7/+16This whole autoburying MrBabyMan stuff is like some lame teenage girl high school drama where there's the pretty popular girl who is good at everything and all the other girls have to hate her for that reason only. Grow up, children, and do your digging based on the CONTENT. This is a good article and people shouldn't miss out on it because you have this childish grudge.
- inactive, on 11/26/2008, -0/+8Very useful, thanks for sharing. I'm asking for a portable GPS device for Christmas, but hadn't decided which one I want. I had been leaning towarn Magellan, but I think I'll go for the Nuvi.
- csarak, on 11/27/2008, -1/+8Dugg for telling people that they need to spend money on headphones. Especially you ignorant bastards on the bus! I can hear your music from your crappy stock iPod headphones. Get a real pair, please!
- snowballrx7, on 11/26/2008, -0/+6Getting the Shure ear buds for my sister for Christmas, since I know she would never spend the money herself.
- JaysonthePirate, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6Also agree on the monitor. Nothing drives me crazy more than a big monitor with a ***** contrast ratio.
- Defiant001, on 11/27/2008, -0/+6Good list. I like the part about upgrading the laptops graphics card, I always recommend computer noobs do this when they come to me, they will usually end up trying to play some 3d game and wonder why it doesn't run on their "brand new" laptop without understanding the difference between a radeon or geforce and a ***** intel integrated-garbage controller. Its well worth the money IMO.
- Coffeedemon, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5Agree about the camera lenses but remember to check brands like Tamron and Sigma for an alternative. They might not beat the upper most level of the 1st party (Canon, Nikon) brands but many of them will compete quite well.
- RooX, on 11/27/2008, -0/+5Honestly, either the TomTom or the Garmin are leagues better than the magellen. I own a Nuvi 260 and a TomTom 920. Both are great, i prefer the TomTom for a few added features. Both are almost identical in terms of reception, both map systems (although different) are both accurate in 99% of situations. Where one might have old data for a certain area, the other has old data for a different area.
Not sure if Garmin payed them for that plug, but it came off as advertising. Both are great systems, and the only two companies i would recommend for vehicle-gps.
Garmin all the way for handheld, and almost all the way for marine GPS though. - deadapostle, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4I might be the only one in the world who doesn't think of RAM or a video card as gadgets. The first two weren't so much suggestions of not skimping on gadgets as telling you (which damn near anyone on a tech site should already know) that these do more to improve your computer's performance than a better processor.
- Dumbledorito, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4An addendum to the monitor: If you want a dual-display, buy them both at the same time, and make sure they're the same brand & model. Trying to get two monitors that aren't the same model (even from the same company) to display identically is a nigh impossible task.
- Coffeedemon, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4They're not gadgets. They are integral parts of a working computer. How much you spend on them determines how well they will perform but they're not gadgets at all. For that matter, neither are lenses since the camera can't really do anything without one attached.
- Dumbledorito, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4I want a way to save some money on one of those 21" Wacom Cintiq tablets, but I'm not holding my breath...
- computershack, on 11/27/2008, -1/+5Don't. I'm a professional driver and so is my mate. I have the Tomtom, he has the Garmin. He's going to buy a Tomtom because the Garmin quite frankly sucks. Both calculate the routes roughly the same but the Tomtom has a far easier to use interface and better address entry which copes with typos and spelling errors better.
- daviddiaz, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4yeah I'm gonna miss the posturepedic mattress I've been sleeping on at my parents' house when I move out. =[
I'm almost certain that the mattresses provided at the dorms are probably very *****. - JaysonthePirate, on 11/27/2008, -1/+5Don't resist. Your hatred makes him stronger.
- TheScreamer, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4Ok, you got me.. I should have specified... me and my stuffies :) http://www.thinkgeek.com/interests/linux/288e/
- TheScreamer, on 11/27/2008, -0/+4An addendum to the mattress. I totally agree, but would like to add... We bought a relatively firm $3800 mattress & box spring set a few years ago, and while it has been fairly comfortable, we have NEVER slept so well and felt so rested as we have since we added a $200 memory foam topper (from Costco) this summer.
- Ryosen, on 11/28/2008, -0/+36. Condoms
- UbIwerks, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3Hey that's what I'm looking through right now!
I do storyboards/illustration. The amount of time I saved in the first two months paid for it! :) It's a fantastic fantastic gadget. Worth every penny! - Dumbledorito, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3That's what I hear. It's just hard to buy a peripheral will cost more than my entire system.
It'd be nice to huck the ol' Grapphire, though. - supermanly, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3I'm gonna go with power supply if you're building a computer since that can screw with your other components more than a monitor can.
I learned that lesson the hard way. - etx313, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3Pretty much everything excluding hookers.
- Tanze, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3relevant, just bought some RAM last night, on the cheap!
- DeFex, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3Dont use those crappy earplugs use these slightly less crappy earplugs for lots of money.
or use reasonable priced headphones which sound better. - JakeyG14, on 11/27/2008, -0/+3Wow, man...any chance you can score me some too?
- inactive, on 11/28/2008, -2/+4tedhead = babyman's boyfriend
- ultrafez, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2So, so true. Especially since more and more applications involving graphics are hardware-accelerated nowadays (e.g. Photoshop) it really does pay to have a decent graphics card. And with what Nvidia is developing, it seems that soon applications will be able to use graphics cards as secondary processors, too.
- deadapostle, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2Eliot Spitzer may as well have skimped on his whores. It's not like the money was keeping their mouths shut.
- MrSkills, on 11/27/2008, -1/+3We? You're on Digg. There can be no "we" in your bed.
- JaysonthePirate, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2Does this mean I have to stop buying things from Woot?
- paraforce, on 11/27/2008, -4/+6Shure is overrated.
- inactive, on 11/27/2008, -2/+4I don't think its agood idea to buy cheap coffee. Get a cafetiere or at least buy a high end instant.
- TheLoneWolf071, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2I Agree that upgrading the Graphics card is better. On laptops graphics card always suck, and they are built into the MoBo, so you can't upgrade unlike your processor(i know there's a socket difference, but still).
- MrSkills, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2They are accessories for gadgets.
- jesterace, on 11/28/2008, -0/+2Or...you could buy new tips for them.
- LiLi009, on 11/27/2008, -0/+2My husband and I bought the TomTom three years ago and we love it! Although, on overcast days, it does go berserk a little bit. It's easy to use, but I wish it had a Qwerty keyboard instead of alpha one. The model we have can still map where we are going when going under tunnels in cities like L.A. TomTom also offers multiple language and speakers which is a nice option. TomTom has a great customer service! We called the company about losing one of the accessories and they replaced it for us!!
- chriscalifornia, on 03/31/2009, -0/+2You won't regret it, it's exactly the same.
- beauley, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Check this out!
We are told by the Vision Council of America That: The U.S., as of 2006 used vision correction such as eyeglasses or contact lenses, representing over 75 % of the country’s total adult population. That is a lot of lenses that can get dirty and smudged with oils from the eye causing vision impairment. Finally, there is a scratch free solution.

How to Make Your Own Scratchless Eyeglass Cleaner - InsaneOni, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1That's a really good list. It's too bad that so many people buy crap that the market tends to cater in that direction. While some of these things will get outdated (Ram, vid cards especially), a good set of headphones and a set of really nice glass will last you a lifetime.
- joltjake, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Who cares who submitted the story? I don't even look, if it's good I digg it, if it's not, I don't. Simple.
- Zephik, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1Only when it comes to their ridiculously high priced models. But the E2c and the SE110 models are excellent canal earbuds and are priced very well at $60-$70 on Amazon.com. But I don't think most people would notice the difference between those and say Creative's EP-630 model, and at almost a third of the price of the Shure models no less.
- InsaneOni, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1I've got a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770's and I can tell you, it's probably the best $200 I ever spent. I don't like ear buds anyway, they hurt my ears.
- MasterQ, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1I have listened to many high-end on-ear and over-ear headphones and I have to say my Bose in-ear headphones that I got for $100 sound excellent by comparison. They have a very good range and the basses are extremely deep and full.
Bottom line: you get what you pay for. Usually the bigger headphones sound better, but don't knock the earbuds when they are from a reputable company like shure or bose. - WiretapStudios, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1I will keep that in mind!
- gurellia53, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1I don't necessarily agree with buying more ram. Find out what your max load will be (task manager/system monitor) and get more than that. Buying 4 GB in a new computer is pointless for most people.
ex.
I run Mandriva on my eee pc 901 (1GB of RAM). Right now these are the programs I have in my taskbar:
Firefox (7 tabs)
pidgin
openoffice.org (spreadsheet and writer)
nautilus
banshee
MATLAB
system monitor
I'm using about 526 MB of RAM. I don't see any reason to upgrade to 2GB of RAM. Now I know that its different for Vista users, but upgrading RAM has always seemed over rated to me. - JaredXM, on 11/28/2008, -0/+1You can also find them for sometimes $20 (once at target) and $30 (biglots right now). Although I won't claim the quality is the same but I did just buy a $30 full size memory foam brand mattress topper from odd lots.
