12 interesting facts about Nokia you may not know...
techscraper.com — Trawling around, looking for something else entirely, I stumbled across this bunch of trivia facts about the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world - Nokia. For example, did you know the “Special” tone available to users of Nokia phones when receiving SMS (text messages) is actually Morse code for “SMS”?

Who knew?! - pHr34kY, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Yeah, I noticed it was morse code the first time I heard it.
Apparently the 'other' beeping tone (the one that goes for ages) is morse for 'connecting people'. - testprojects, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0Nokia is Great
- testprojects, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0This is my second comment
- xile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah... it drives me crazy every time I hear it knowing that I'm the only person in the room who thought anything of the message behind the beep.
- TheSaladMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2013: Nokia started as a paper company
(Did a work placement there last year) :P- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -17/+414. The Nokia 8890 was the last decent phone (useable in the states) ever made by any company.
- aptiva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They used to make boots too afaik.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4"Unlike other modern day handsets, Nokia phones do not automatically start the call timer when the call is connected, but start it when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets like the Nokia 6600)"
ummm, all handsets do this. not special.
What a boring article. - omenmedia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Interesting, but that morse code thing, man I figured that out not too long after first hearing it and I don't even know much morse code... the way I guessed it was that it sounded a little like the morse code for "S.O.S" which is ...---... so I assumed that with two dashes it was morse for SMS
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3...--... not ...---...
- omenmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8read it again:
"the morse code for "S.O.S" which is ...---..." - nazsco, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8#171 nokia criples every phone to appeal operators rather then users.
- TrInIdUdE, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1I have a motorola V620.

- ThomasTuttle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18This is almost entirely copied from the Nokia article at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia . (It does link to the Wikipedia article, though). Plagiarism is stupid. (Yes, I know WP's CC license allows it, but it's immoral to just swipe it like that.)
- Arch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15To copy from someone is called plagiarism, to copy from many is called research.
- EdThomson, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Wikipedia is not under a CC license but the GNU Free Documentation License and the license does not allow them to freely copy the information. - ThomasTuttle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4EdThomson: You are right. Thanks for catching my mistake. So it's even worse.

- telconamja, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Number 11 is not true.
Also what was number 10 trying to state? Other companies are not in direct competition with Nokia? That one was the worse.
How did this get to the front page it was pretty boring. - templest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Any word on where to get the font?
"AgfaMonotype Nokia Sans"- Slayback, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5While not complete, this fontset is darn close:

- Tuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nokia also makes some of the best firewall/IPS devices around. Often regarded as the best by many security professionals. I have no personal experience with them, just what I have heard.
- mattb5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7All that trivia and they don't even mention that Nokia started out as a boot manfacturer.
http://tecfa.unige.ch/perso/staf/nova/blog/2005/05/26/nokia-rubber-boots/- vuzman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I owned a couple of Nokia boots when I was a kid. Actually they're probably still at my parents house somewhere, they never throw anything away. We also had a Nokia TV at one time.
- alej744, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7"Nokia is currently the world’s largest digital camera manufacturer, as the sales of its camera-equipped mobile phones have exceeded those of any conventional camera manufacturer."
*****.- KeiichiMorisato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It did seem surprising.. but think about it. They do crank out a lot of cell phones with these cheap (ie., low-quality VGA cameras).
Heck, my 8801 has one--which I rarely use and would've preferred my phone without one--so it does make sense that they'd be high on the list of digi camera manufacturers.

- thelionheart, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6- Morse code for SMS and Connecting people does not sound like the ringtone at all. Try to do this yourself.

- Nokia is competing with Motorola and Sony Ericsson? Wake up, America, Nokia has over 35% of cellphone market share, while Motorola just passed 20%, and Samsung is like 10%. Americans happen to use the most ugly phones in the world. You guys are even using Palm, which I could not even give away in Asia like 5 years ago. And look at the devices you are so proud of, Blackberry, it is soooo ugly and bulky.- dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Actually, in Asia I believe it is a "Brackberry".
- nads, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SMS does.
- cazabam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The SMS one certainly does sound like the tone. Also, I think you're missing the point of the word 'competing'. Sure, they have a higher market share, but they're not ubiquitous, nor do they have a monopoly. Competing is exactly the right word to use. Or were you just on an anti-US rant?
- amigiac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Or were you just on an anti-US rant?"
You guys are so defensive.
I guess the guys across the pond just aren't used to mobiles, they had a ***** billing system (would you pay to receive a call) for a long time and have only just gained access to the kind of phones we have seen as normal for years. They still get bad reception but maybe one day they will catch up with Europe and the Middle East. - thelionheart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Of coz i know what competition is. It is just odd that this is something in one of the "unknown" facts.
am i anti-US? I am anti-US phones, and the ridiculous taste. Funny I was in a cab the other day, and the driver used a Razr. Cannot believe it is still the hottest selling item in the US and considered a fashion phone on your nick of the wood while Beijing taxi driver (salary is like US 250 a month) is using it.
by the way, if "ranting" on US phones is now considered anti-US, i have the feeling that you guys are going thru a Culture Revolution w/o even knowing it.
- theSteve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Arrrgh! Darn the invasion of the crafty Finns!
You can of course modify the wikipedia article if you have something to add or correct. - testprojects, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0Hello i myself own Nokia 3310.
