- BillDoE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+74Yeah I'm sure it was YouTube, and had nothing to do with the fact that it was on every major news broadcast. Yes I'm almost positive now that the TV, and school officials didn't record the game. They review it on YouTube.

how about just the youtube. - e03179, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37The guy would have been fired even if YouTube was not around.
- kevincole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Lame title, YouTube had absolutly nothing to do with it. But I am glad he was fired, I was hoping he would be while I was watching it. *Of course BillDoE beat me to it.*
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25It just goes to show, once a thug, always a thug. Dressing him up in a suit and giving him a microphone doesn't change anything.
He deserved to get fired. - canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21and definately not the 100 times they ran in on espn and then talked about on around the horn and pti and mike and mike. youtube is the only thing anyone in the sports world pays attention to.
screw "the u!" - ucbrave92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19it was totally unprofessional. i am surprised it took this long to fire him, if i were his boss he wouldn't have had a job when he left the stadium.
- Ignitedude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Thank God this guy got fired.
He sounded like a complete moron, not a professional sporting commentator. - orenthal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14i wouldnt say youtube got lamar thomas fired, i would say being an idiot got lamar thomas fired.
he still hasnt mentally recovered from when george teague ran him down from behind and took the ball away from him in the 1992 sugar bowl. - orenthal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13lamar thomas's 2nd most embarrassing moment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SkoT0T4vWk - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14when keeping it real goes wrong..
- SharkJumper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Yeah right. They don't hire the fresh-out-of-the game football players as color commentators because they want unbiased reporting full of journalistic integrity in a gravitas-laden voice. He may have pushed the line that the network was comfortable with, but he was doing what they hired him to do.
- Van3ck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Marked as lame by me as well.
Millions of people saw this LIVE on Television, and heard it on the radio.
Following that, ESPN and every news channel played the footage over and over that night to show "the big fight" and included his commentary.
The video may have been popular on Youtube *after* the fact... but it was not the youtube audiences that had anything to do with him getting fired... there is absolutely no data to back up that claim. - snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8yet another post that just goes on and on periods are optional commas are fun now lets talk about something else did you see the game last night i like apples, do midgets really hate it when you pick them up its not easy being green i think lesbians should have a perfume called piss off mister how many paperclips can i string together before my boss finds out im not really working i dont like the rain or that song by garth my hovercraft is full of eels bouncy bouncy these comment am for everybody to see to and something doesnt matter.
- canewediggit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10the ignorant racist out of the south?
- wilkeson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Yeah, I mean, who cares if a doctor can't tell the difference between an ass and an elbow?
Idiocy isn't a fireable offense? I guess that explains how you're employed. - LibertyVista, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Older youtube highlights of Lamar Thomas include him getting run down and stripped by Bama's George Teague in the 1993 national championship game...
http://youtube.com/watch?v=7SkoT0T4vWk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AERD9x3yMcI&NR
Miami kept the ball because a Bama lineman jumped offsides, but Teague's efforts prevented what would have been a 90 yard touchdown. - Gondar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"You don't come into the O.B. talkin smack!" LOL, Apparently you don't leave "The U" educated enough to be in the public spotlight either.
- fazed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He got himself fired, not youtube. Don't take the blame away from this ***** idiot just because you are aspiring to be one
- Rethcir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can we somehow parlay this into getting Joe Buck and Tim McCarver fired?
- baaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And the true colors just shine..dont they..good riddance pal!
- feylanks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5my ctrl-f function must be broken, i couldn't find any mention of youtube in that article.
- SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Thomas shouldn't have been egging them on like that though really. His job is to be an impartial play-by-play giver. I would not have minded if he was just giving the blow by blow of what was happening.
- BAMAToNE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Haha, helllll yeah! It's on every Bama highlight reel I've ever seen. Most people don't know that yes, Miami kept the ball because of an offsides call. But damn, it sure deflated the Hurricanes. Their Heisman winning QB threw for 278 yards, but also threw three interceptions and managed only 13 points (two field goals and a punt return for TD).

http://www.rolltide.com/fls/8000/files/football/1992/GameRecaps/92recapMIAMI.pdf?DB_OEM_ID=8000 - Dingo128, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lamar Thomas is a loser, and he deserved to get fired. It is that simple. If it was anyone else, it would not have even taken that long to get fired.
- rhrrs2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're kidding right? Try listining to this from the angle of a HS football player, or any other youngster watching the game. Talk about an 'open' mind. Is this the College football what we want to show them? Real sportsmanlike conduct! Maybe he (and you) thought it was funny, but it wasn't. It just wasn't.
- KChambers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great, Over 13 years after Lamar Thomas should have learned to keep his mouth shut after running it all month long before the 1992 National Championship, he still can't. This is the same Lamar Thomas that talked about destroying Alabama and now has a prime-time spot in the Alabama football pre-game video getting chased down and having the ball stripped by George Teague while his "U" was destroyed 34-13. RTR!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U5q-iKx3Co&mode=related&search= - GuyHitByTruck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Even after Katrina, the governer of Louisiana is still in office, and the mayor of New Orleans was re-elected. Idiocy is appearently NOT fireable offence.
- nicheplayer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You know, I was originally in the "thank God this idiot got fired" camp, but you know, now I'm leaning more toward the "he was doing what he was hired to do" camp. Granted, Thomas lacked any professionalism and was just plain stupid, but don't you think they knew that when he was hired? You think he walked into the interview room in a three-piece and spent the hour discussing Proust? No. Yes, he should've been fired, but the real morons here are the people who hired him in the first place.
- gettarat, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1He sounded like a complete moron, not a professional sporting commentator.
http://footballbettingtips.net/ - IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The article said the video was online but I highly, highly doubt, that officials from the school heard about his commentary from YouTube. Isn't it possible that his words were heard...um... during the game..? YouTube may be owned by the Google-plex now, but they aren't getting bush league TV Analysts fired.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Flag down on the play, let's see what the call is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sorry if this is a dupe comment, just didn't have a chance to read them all. Isn't it funny that they are going to edit out his comments, but are going to make damn well sure they leave the fight in the re-broadcast. They don't condone the fighting or the comments, but the one that would kill the number of people who watch the replay would plummet if they cut the fight out. Hypocrisy.
- sarge96, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great! When can they start on John Madden!
- daimposter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1buried as inaccurate. Youtube had nothing to do with the firing. If anybody outside of Lamar Thomas are to blame, it was ESPN or other outlets. Not Youtube.
obviously the person who submitted this thought that including Youtube and Gets someone fired in the same sentence would get people to digg. We fell for his ploy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3He isn't play-by-play, the other guy was. Typically sports journalist/communications majors are the PbP and the former athletes are there for color commentary (and no, no pun or racism intended whatsover).
- hyzdufan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is what happens when you throw any old jock into the booth as a commentator.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spotlight? I would probably never have heard of who this guy was if this never happened.
- RamanujanRedux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here is his supposed response, courtesy Deadspin: http://mb16.scout.com/fwakeforestfrm1.showMessage?topicID=79937.topic
"first of all anyone who has ever met me knows my passion for the program. The University of Miami made me the person that i am today. I have NEVER shied away from speaking my opinion. Yesterday I saw a struggling miami football group become a TEAM. This is my second year working for Comcast Sports Southeast, and I really enjoy it. Recently this year I was pulled aside and told I needed to be more pro UM, because i was being to hard on the KIDS. Yesterday I watched our KIDS play a team that came into the OB for one reason, to make a name for its program. FIU WAS NOT GOING TO GO DOWN WITHOUT A FIGHT. AT first they were very physical, and that was to be expected because 90 percent of FIU's KIDS had dreams of being a Cane. But then their frustration set in, after James Bryant turned up the heat with his physical play. Cheap shots then pursued. I WAS PROUD OF THOSE KIDS FOR STANDING UP FOR THEIR BROTHERS. I do not agree with the swinging of the helmets. Nor the media only pointing out our KIDS. But if you know anything about this program, WE ARE THE TEAM THAT EVERYONE HATES. ON to what i said, I was so hyped in the booth I let my emotions take over. Do I have to apologize for sayin what I said? HELL 2 DA NAW ! Im going to make this simple, FIU tried to push us around and we fought back. From that point on for first time this year, WE look like A team trying to Destroy the opposition. I said i wanted to get on the elevator and go down to the field. LOL, I'm 36 years old what hell would i have accomplished. I did say you cant come into our house and try to slap us and not get slapped back. which is true so............. I'm not a coach ! My job is to talk. For our broadcasts which are made for U of M fans, I'm supposed to add insight. And by golly I gave it, because if that was during my tenure we would have invited FIU to Tamiami Park to get it on(FRIENDLY GAME OF SANDLOT FOOTBALL,OF COURSE) LOL. As you notice, I've called them KIDS. Lets not forget that. For most of these KIDS, The U is their FAMILY. Some people spoke of my lack of professionalism, but this wasnt ESPN, ABC, TBS or PBS. Im not supposed to be neutral. Folks that watch this want to hear about the U, past and present. Listen If You wanna say I wouldnt Be a good coach because of my passion, Go ahead, thats your opinion. Maybe later on in life i will finally send in my resume. But right now I'm having too much fun running my mouth. OH yea I also enjoy chatting with our True fans. And for the ones who love to be very critical of me and the team. so be it . KEEP ON KEEPIN ON ITS YOUR OPINION. GOD BLESS AMERICA ITS ALL THE ABOUT U, BABY!I LOVE TO TALK YA!" - myborgdrone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm not really a football fan but I watched the clip to see what all the hoopla was about. Nobody thought it was funny what he was saying? He wasn't pushing the players to fight. They couldn't hear him. He was just talking smack riding on the adrenaline wave. Even the other commentator was laughing and kind of pushed the guy to make another remark. Listen to it again with an open mind. The guy was just being funny. Maybe since I'm not really a football fan, I see it differently. Maybe if it was Dennis Miller, other people would see the comedy as well.
- redbaron122, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol what a dumbass but i guess this story is inaccurate it is supposed to say google get commentator fired
- joaob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lame.
ESPN Radio replayed the clip at least a dozen times a day calling for this guy's head. - persaltier, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Marked as inaccurate. I'd mark it as 'stupid commentator' as well, but that option wasn't provided.
- Dingo128, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That is a good point. When he got hired, they should have known that he was a loose cannon, a glorified thug. Though I think that the network was giving him a second chance. Then again, what do you expect from someone with a checked past?
- tocksin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2encouraging unsportsmanlike conduct is not becoming of anyone. i'm not surprised the network wouldn't want someone speaking for them who does.
- midmarky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I totally agree. He should lose his job. Along with some administraters from both schools. You CANNOT let a team have this kind of attitude out on the field. It is a huge blemish on college football and there needs to be some major modifications to both programs.
- bcope16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just inaccurate. youTube in no way got this man fired. His inane comments did, period.
- RazorCrusade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If only this comment could be posted on youtube and get you fired from digg.
- RoboPimp3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hate when people refer to 6 foot tall, 200+ pound men in their twenties as kids.
- RedState, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How stupid is it to attack a guy who is fully covered from head to toe in pads?
It would be different I guess if one of the guys wasn't wearing pads.
One more thing: if I am in a football game and fights break out, the 1 thing I'm definitely keeping on is my helmet! Anyone who took it off ought to be suspended just for being dumb.
On the topic: I think it was more than YouTube that got the dope fired. It was that he said it live, on air! Not only were Miamians watching, but so were FIU fans & family! Can you imagine an announcer carrying on about it being good that FIU is getting their butts kicked and it is YOUR SON trying to break it up, getting hit, tackled, attacked and so on. Then that announcer celebrates as Maimi celebrates the fight. That is definitely enough to get you fired.
Also, I think all of Miami should be suspended for the rest of the year. It is more than a few players. It is a culture. Forfeit the season or put all the benchers on! -
