- PaxRomana, on 01/03/2009, -3/+58The Utes didn't just beat Alabama, they destroyed them. Games like these prove that college football desperately needs a playoff system.
- SuperSneaks, on 01/03/2009, -4/+56If the AP wants to give their title to someone other than the Florida - Oklahoma game winner then it should go to Utah. Tonight they looked like the best team in the nation.
- mrfreeziexp, on 01/03/2009, -3/+44BCS needs to die. The Utes are the only undefeated team in the nation, and tonight they proved that it's not just luck. They're arguably one of the top 3 teams, but they're 7th. WTF? 7th?
- Dahby, on 01/03/2009, -2/+41How does the Mountain West not get an automatic BCS bid? They already have two teams that have higher BCS rankings than both the ACC and Big East. If Texas beats OSU like they should, both TCU and Utah should have higher rankings than anyone in the Big Ten.
Great game Utes! I've watched a lot of Utah football and this was by far the greatest victory in Utes history. - virtualcorey, on 01/03/2009, -4/+31Alabama sure got educated in that game. Alabama went into the game saying they belonged in a better bowl and after getting shut down by Utah their coach called it a "building year." Quite a difference.
Well done Utah. - InfamousAtheist, on 01/03/2009, -6/+31Congrats to the Utes on another perfect season! I'm so proud of my alma mater! This has been the best team in school history, and they went out and proved it tonight.
The media hasn't given the Utes or the MWC any respect all year! Nobody gave us any chance to beat Alabama... especially ESPN's analysts. So much for their "expertise." (I'm looking at you, Barry Switzer)
I would really love to see Florida lose to OU and for Utah to finish ahead of them and Urban Meier in the standings.
GO UTES! - inactive, on 01/03/2009, -2/+25Alabama didn't know what to do with Utah when they started off with 3 TD's in less than 10 minutes.
Absolutely AMAZING game! I went to all but one Utah home game this year... I wish I could have made it to the Sugar Bowl. - jkavvy, on 01/04/2009, -1/+20Herein lies one of the problems with the BCS system.
Some teams begin the season with absolutely 0% chance of playing for the title. Utah defeated Michigan, Oregon State (a team that defeated USC), two top 16 conference opponents and #4 Alabama and finished undefeated.....and for the rest of their lives, this Utes team will be wondering 'What If'. - InfamousAtheist, on 01/03/2009, -0/+18The MWC will never get an automatic bid because NCAA football is controlled by big conferences with big money. The MWC is great, but it can't get the media respect or the huge dollars that schools in bigger conferences can put together.
I think it's long past time for Utah and BYU to join the PAC-10 (which would be renamed to PAC-12). It would allow the PAC-12 to have a conference championship game and give that ailing conference a big boost. It would also do wonders for Utah's recruiting efforts (more than it would BYU because of the strict Mormon rules at that school), so Utah fans should be pushing for a change. - swik, on 01/04/2009, -6/+23If the regular season IS the playoff, then how does an undefeated team not win the National Championship? Oh, because the Emperor is wearing no clothing.
- BassMastr, on 01/04/2009, -0/+15As an Oklahoma fan, while I do think my team is better, no one can say Utah doesn't have a legit argument to the NC. (It hurts to admit.)
- bignerd, on 01/04/2009, -1/+16I'm so ***** sick of this, can we have a ***** PLAY-OFF PLEASE!!!!!!
- cle2105, on 01/04/2009, -1/+13Any o-lineman would not have kept Utah from scoring three TDs in the first 10 minutes
- Lith25, on 01/04/2009, -0/+11No, Alabama got destroyed. We only scored one offensive touchdown the whole game. The other was all thanks to Arenas.
- profkong, on 01/04/2009, -1/+10Not only did they win against Alabama, they completely dominated them, offensively and defensively. The game shouldn't have been as close as it was.
Utah deserves a chance to prove themselves against the best teams in the country. - SheaGK, on 01/04/2009, -0/+8Why the ***** does everyone jump on the Big East? Every bowl season the Big Ten gets their asses handed to them over and over again and the Big East, at the very least, holds their own (4-2 this year and I seem to recall them going undefeated last year).
Take away the Big Ten's automatic birth. I'm tired of seeing USC beat them around every year. - headlessclown, on 01/04/2009, -1/+9i was at the game. i'm a bama fan. but i'll admit they outplayed us. andre smith's absence was sorely missed. they jumped on us too fast for a comeback. the utes played great football.
- SethEllis, on 01/03/2009, -4/+12Utah was just toying with them there at the end with that lateral pass to Brent Casteel.
- kagebutsu, on 01/04/2009, -0/+7***** the BCS
- BassMastr, on 01/04/2009, -1/+8Fortunelty, it won't just be the Utes...It's Auburn back in the day as well as Texas this year and I'm sure a dozen other teams in between. As long as the BCS is around will will always wonder "what if".
- inactive, on 01/03/2009, -2/+9It would have made little to no difference in the outcome.
- Dougman82, on 01/04/2009, -2/+9Ok, how about this: Alabama got man-handled by Utah.
- Lith25, on 01/04/2009, -2/+8As both a student and fan of Alabama, I have to agree. We got destroyed by Utah. Utah was a big surprise to everybody, and none of us expected it to even be a close game.
I'm not making excuses, but I'm pretty sure that Utah would also destroy Florida in a championship game. They are better than most BCS teams and deserve a shot at the national title next year. - BassMastr, on 01/04/2009, -0/+6As an Oklahoma fan...Boise State taught me anything can happen. While i do think we have a better team. NO ONE can say UTAH doesn't have just a legite argument to NC as ANYONE. (I hate to say it.)
- RyeBrye, on 01/04/2009, -1/+7Alabama looked way worse against Utah than both TCU and BYU did.
Of course, few people know this because the MWC has that retarded arrangement where "The Mountain" gets exclusive TV rights, and "The Mountain" is as national as your local public access channel. - FikusErectus, on 01/04/2009, -11/+16We have a National Champion! It is Utah. I don't care what the 1 loss teams do on January 8th. They are not important or undefeated.
- stickerman, on 01/04/2009, -2/+7Utah was missing two linemen and a linebacker to start the game. They seemed to fill in for them ok. If you actually saw the game, Utah destroyed them. One lineman would have made little difference.
And where was the 3rd ranked defense of Alabama? There was not one area of the game that Utah did not dominate. - suprememilo, on 01/04/2009, -1/+6One of the top 6 teams I'd say you don't know about OSU, Texas, USC, Florida, or Oklahoma.
We need a playoff. - Gizmo688, on 01/04/2009, -0/+5oh it was an awesome atmosphere. too bad im a bama fan :(
- smacksaw, on 01/04/2009, -1/+6I think at this point we're all repeating old arguments, but perhaps we need to repeat them until someone takes them seriously.
I don't care how weak Utah's schedule was. They can't have a better strength of schedule if they can't schedule better opponents. Good teams aren't going to ***** with them in non-conference games. They earn their stars in their conference. They want cakewalks to pad their stats in non-conference games.
Utah can only play in the conference they're in and the people dumb enough to schedule a game with them. We're cheated because we'll never really know how good they are. Boise State, or Hawaii last year - we found out. It was lopsided. But we can't know if there isn't any sort of comparable competition.
It's a circular argument and it's a ***** lie. You can't say they're not the best since they didn't play a tougher schedule. They didn't play a tougher schedule because they're too good and ranked teams are scared.
McCain? You want to legislate sport? Start with this, buddy. - 89vision, on 01/04/2009, -3/+7Oh please, Kruger would have pwned Andre Smith
- 89vision, on 01/04/2009, -4/+8Go Utes!
- chieffan, on 01/04/2009, -2/+6I don't know what more schools like Boise St, Utah, etc need to prove they deserve to be in a title game. Utah twice won BCS games an Boise St beat Oklahoma. Meanwhile the Big 10 sucks more each year.
- Feep, on 01/04/2009, -0/+4You don't really understand Digg, do you?
- BassMastr, on 01/04/2009, -0/+4As a big 12 fan I have to agree that the SEC is the best conference as of late. I thought this year it might go to the Big 12 but we saw how Texas Tech and OSU played. While I don't think they are heads and shoulders above the rest of the conferences as a lot of SEC fans will have you believe, they are typically the best conference top to bottom. As for any other sport the Florida basketball championship are the SEC's only claim to fame as of late. (Glad Digg is annonymous b/c I would never admit this to the people I work with.)
- SRSco, on 01/03/2009, -1/+5The ACC had a weak year but it can easily recover. The Big East, on the other hand, is a complete joke. I'd love to see the Big East stripped of its automatic BCS berth and have it handed over to the Mountain West (or see Utah and BYU join the PAC.)
Or...can Boise State at least join the Mountain West? - parkskier, on 01/04/2009, -0/+4Every conference has weak teams. The Big Ten had Michigan, Purdue, and Indiana (all who Penn State played). The Big Twelve had Iowa State, Baylor, Texas A&M (the latter two Oklahoma beat). The SEC had Kentucky and Tennessee (who Florida beat)...oh and Florida scheduled the very difficult game with Citadel. And the Pac-10 had Washington, Washington State, and UCLA (who USC beat). So to say that Utah wasted games in their conference (which is unavoidable) just doesn't hold up. Utah scheduled a game with Michigan (which would normally be a difficult out of conference game), but obviously that was not the case.
- Tubal22, on 01/04/2009, -0/+4I don't think Utah would destroy Florida, USC, or Texas, but they would be competitive, and maybe win.
@legendxx: The MWC isn't "such a weak conference". Utah, BYU, and TCU were all ranked in the top 15 at some point this year.
The SEC conference's 4 bottom feeders had 8 conference wins combined. MWC's 4 bottom feeders had 6 conference wins combined. Not much difference. Especially when the SEC is big enough so that the bottom feeders don't always play the heavyweights. You have kind of a weak argument. - ArmandoM, on 01/04/2009, -0/+4Odd that a sports story would be posted in the sports section...
Maybe you should turn that section off if you don't want to see sports stuff?
Just a thought. - elipabst, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3The Big East has one of the strongest conferences this year top to bottom, they just don't have a dominant team. I love how people talk ***** on how bad the Big East is and then praise the merits of the SEC and Big 12, meanwhile the Big East is 3-2 in their last 5 automatic BCS games and beat both the SEC and Big 12 (WVU dropped 30 on heavily favored Georgia in the first half and beat Oklahoma last year by 20).
- RyeBrye, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3Boise State has good football, but all their other sports are absolute crap so the MWC wouldn't want them.
- parkskier, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3Oh, I see your point. Because they had an equal case as Oklahoma to be in the Big Twelve championship game and therefore would have been in Oklahoma's spot.
- JiveRabbit, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3Conferences dont work that way
- swollentiki, on 01/05/2009, -0/+3Undefeated isn't the end-all decision in college football. You have to look at who they played and beat. If you look at most of the 1-loss teams you will see they lost to very good teams. It's easy to go undefeated if you don't play that many tough teams. Utah beat Bama, okay fine, but would they beat Florida? We will never know.
With that said, college football needs a playoff system badly. - parkskier, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3BassMastr, you seem to have forgotten that Texas has yet to beat OSU. If they can pull that off then they can wonder "what if," but until then they can't.
- Ramenhood, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3LSU demolished Georgia Tech, Kentucky beat E. Carolina, Georgia beat Michigan State and Ole Miss beat Texas Tech. 3 of those were "upsets." SEC proved that it is the best conference, but Utah also proved that they ARE a great team.
- bubba9999, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3I'd like to see a play off system that culminates in the College Championship on a Saturday, followed by the NFL Championship on the Sunday. Best Football Weekend Ever!
- rmaddy, on 01/04/2009, -0/+3Lets see Texas (or OK, FL, UT or TX) win all five games and if one of them can, then they can claim to be the national champion.
Oh...wait...that kind of like a playoff....... - brunevm, on 01/04/2009, -2/+5Haha Bammer's, and what do you got to say for the season? Nothing
- RyeBrye, on 01/04/2009, -0/+2I just posted a comment about how your comment linking to your other digg article is retarded.
