- cyrusuncc, on 01/08/2009, -2/+46A playoff/bracket system makes more sense, but there is oo much money in the bowl games that they won't let go of their death grip.
- s0lace, on 01/08/2009, -10/+53Undefeated.
- Gr00ver, on 01/08/2009, -0/+41Everyone is screwed as long as the BCS is still active and in control.
- clemsontiger, on 01/08/2009, -2/+39The BCS is extremely biased. Just look at USC losing to an unranked team and only falling a few spots. Unranked team. It is the same way in basketball too. UNC losses to BC and they only fall a few spots as well. Poll biases are everywhere.
- calebhawk, on 01/08/2009, -3/+36I'm an Alabama fan and I was at the Sugar Bowl... The Utes deserve every right to compete for the National Championship... Out of every team the Crimson Tide has played this year, Utah was by far the most talented (including Florida)
Congrats to Utah for being badass, had fun on Bourbon Street none-the-less - s0lace, on 01/08/2009, -4/+32Cream puffs? They beat 6 bowl teams on their way to an undefeated season. Also, Alabama was more than "decent" they were the #1 team in the nation for 5 weeks straight at one point. Get your facts straight-
- inigomntoya, on 01/08/2009, -0/+25BYU wasn't that great this year (overrated in my opionon) and that BYU game was a blowout - BYU's defense didn't show up and their QB was the best player on the U's team.
But, Utah beat TCU, Oregon State (who beat USC), and Alabama. It wasn't just a bunch of cream puff teams. - Ryanw430, on 01/08/2009, -0/+21BYU? TCU was far better than BYU this year. I guess Utah does need to schedule better competition since they played Michigan at Michigan (yes, the Big Ten is horrible, but Ohio State woulda got in if they went undefeated) and Oregon State after the latter team beat USC. You do realize the MWC destroyed the Pac-10 earlier in the year, don't you? Even UNLV beat Arizona State at Arizona State. So I guess the Pac-10 and Big Ten don't deserve shots at the national title too even if one of their teams goes undefeated, right? Come on.
- snowpunter, on 01/08/2009, -1/+22"If Utah played the exact same schedule and won by the exact same scores, but played their games as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, they'd be No. 1 by a unanimous vote."
Love it. - akaakc, on 01/08/2009, -2/+21@ roddack
Why should that matter? Just because they're in a "lesser" conference, they shouldn't be able to play for a championship?
Compare that to NCAA basketball. Does it matter what conference any of those basketball teams are in? Do they still get a chance to play for a national title, regardless of the conference? As long as they're good enough, they get a seed in the tournament and have just as much chance as any other "big conference" team. So why is it different in NCAA football? It shouldn't be. I'm pretty sure the Utah Utes' basketball team played in a huge tournament game, I can't remember if it was a National Championship or a Final Four, against the big SEC Kentucky Wildcats a few years back. Why should the basketball team get that chance, but not the football team? - UtahApocalyse, on 01/08/2009, -1/+20***** the BCS.
- Springdiggity, on 01/08/2009, -4/+22Get rid of the BCS, and go to a playoff system. It's just that easy.
- nopointinnames, on 01/08/2009, -1/+17Here's what I don't understand, the playoff system, with say 8 teams gives you 7 extra games. Unlike the bowl games where the average fan watches 2-3 games, there would be insane viewership of all 7 games. It would be like college basketball but on an even bigger scale. Turn those 7 games into "bowl" games, the sponsor is still there yet the sponsor is now getting more viewers because people actually give a *****. This would last a total of 3 weeks, teams already have to sit out over a month to play the national championship game so there would be plenty of time. Only 2 teams in the entire nation would have to play 2 more games, guys that are fixing to play on a professional level can handle 2 more games.
The "money" excuse the NCAA and BCS throw around is a crock of *****, they could make more money from a playoff system which would be more entertaining and much more fair. - Guy88, on 01/08/2009, -1/+17Actually, their toughest game was against #11 TCU (according to polls), who will be higher after the bowl season. Florida's toughest game was against a clearly overrated Alabama team that the team you're attacking just beat up on. Of course, Florida also lost a game. If Oklahoma wins tonight then I don't see much of a debate since Oklahoma played a killer conference AND tough non-conference schedule (Big East champ Cinci and a soon to be top 10 TCU). If Florida wins I certainly see a major argument to be made for both USC and Utah though.
- mhelal2, on 01/08/2009, -1/+16Tha'ts classy fan from Alabama. Thanks.
- pathouston22, on 01/08/2009, -1/+14How are they suppose to schedule "real" competition when the bigger schools refuse to go on the road for a home and home?
The entire system is flawed. - bsolidgold, on 01/08/2009, -4/+17Utah beat TCU, Oregon State, BYU and Alabama. All ranked in the top 25 all year. Alabama was ranked No.1 for 5 weeks of the season up to their loss against Florida in the SEC championship game.
You're obviously not included as "Every College Football Fan" since you don't know this. Get your facts straight. - jkr801, on 01/08/2009, -0/+12Alabama sucked so bad they were #1 for a number a weeks man that must be a sucky team.
- bsolidgold, on 01/08/2009, -3/+15False. They played 4, count 'em, 4 ranked teams all year.
Utah beat Alabama by a larger margin than Florida did... and Florida barely pulled that one out of their ass.
Oklahoma lost to Texas who lost to Texas Tech... who lost to Ole Miss.
How many games did Utah lose? ZERO - BentCorner, on 01/08/2009, -6/+17I can understand putting importance on the BCS bowl system if you have a bunch of teams 12-1. That isn't the case this year. There's a 1A team that went UNDEFEATED and people are actually pretending that either Florida or Oklahoma is the best team in the country? The best team is the one with the best record.
- prnorm, on 01/08/2009, -2/+12Do you even know who they played?? Check their strength of schedule, check how many top 25 teams they beat. Check how many top 10 teams they beat...
And I'm sure Utah would love to join a major conference. You just let them know which conference has an opening for them, and I'm sure they'll be glad to accept the invite. - trixyfox, on 01/08/2009, -0/+10First in 50 years? They did the exact same thing a few years ago when they beat Pittsburgh in a BCS bowl with Urban Meyer as their head coach.
- bsolidgold, on 01/08/2009, -5/+15I wish I could digg this a million times. I am a hardcore Utah fan... I went to all but one home game. Utah's claim to the national title holds more water than any other team in the nation. Go ahead, stake your claim. I'll prove Utah is more deserving every time.
I'm not saying that I know that Utah would beat Florida, OU or USC... etc. I'm also not saying that they would lose to said teams... I'm just saying based on the criteria they're using, Utah should be No.1. Period. - prnorm, on 01/08/2009, -3/+12They beat 4 ranked teams, 4. TCU, BYU, Oregon State, Alabama.
TCU will probably be in the top 10 in the final polls, so maybe you got confused and were thinking about how many top-10 teams they beat. - Azlen, on 01/08/2009, -1/+10Their first game was against Michigan. While it turned out that Michigan sucked, they couldn't have known that when they scheduled them, so it isn't like they are just scheduling real cream puffs like some BCS teams do.
- diggum85, on 01/08/2009, -1/+10Buried for not listing 13 separate reasons to feel cheated...
- UtahApocalyse, on 01/08/2009, -0/+9Then play us :) Prove it.... who had losses this season?? Oh yeah NOT Utah so BRING IT THE ***** ON!! You wont play us because were not a big school, from the big conference.... yet when we dominate our conference, and EVERY team we play you say its because we didn't play the big teams. See the catch-22 there??? We cannot EVER beat the Big Teams if they REFUSE to play us.....
- prnorm, on 01/08/2009, -2/+10Played 4, count 'em, 4 ranked teams all year. Do some research.
- pathouston22, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8You are flawed comparing Ohio State going to USC, compared to a school of their caliber traveling to BYU.
- inigomntoya, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8Agreed - And then the actual winner is determined by the PRESS!
- oldhick, on 01/08/2009, -0/+8That's complete and total crap. "Handed success", right.
I'm sure your failures seem less like your own fault with that mind set though! - wadd, on 01/08/2009, -2/+9Got it. You want to leave the undefeated teams out of luck.
- coreyb, on 01/08/2009, -5/+12I'm Mormon, ya got something to say?
I am not really into the bowl games or a fan of the U, but I am so sick and tired of people who don't know a thing about us spouting crap... If you have something to say, then say it! But make sure you at least know a Mormon before you open your mouth. - nirv117, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8I keep hearing that utah should join a major conference .....
Does that mean the SEC is now inviting Utah to join?
Didn't think so. It is easy to say go join a conference, but the cartel isn't inviting teams to join. I'm sure utah would join the big 12 or pac 10 if invited, but they can't just show up and say oh we are members of your conference now. - FyreGoddess, on 01/08/2009, -0/+7I'm astounded that anyone would dig up a comment about being "handed success without effort" or getting screwed.
I mean, ok, that's true for a handful of people on both sides, but really? Everyone?
You know, you don't *have* to be a cubicle drone forever. You can find a different job or start your own business and do something you love. Sometimes that means going back to school, sometimes it's just means growing a pair.
But, hey, if success isn't handed to you, I guess it's just your tough luck, despite everything else... - inigomntoya, on 01/08/2009, -1/+8A record doesn't necessarily determine the best team. But because the system is broken, it is impossible to determine the best team. So, we are stuck with biased polls and "elites" to tell us who we should crown as #1.
- snowpunter, on 01/08/2009, -3/+9So if I find a team with better stats than those two then you'll agree that its superior to UF and OU???
How about this:
Utah 31 Alabama 17
Florida 31 Alabama 20 - jkr801, on 01/08/2009, -2/+8You are a moron go pull up the schedule
- camino262, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7The BCS system is designed so certian schools will make money. It is not designed to produce the best football team in the country. As an Auburn fan and graduate, I feel Utah's pain. In 2004 Auburn went undefeated and did not get a chance to play in the NC game. USC spanked Oklahoma that year (55-19). Auburn may have played better than Oklahoma that year - but we will never know. Thanks BCS.
- bsolidgold, on 01/08/2009, -3/+9I love how everyone thinks it's their choice to be in the MWC conference. The whole point of this argument is that the BCS is made up of a Good ol' boys network from all the so-called 'Big Schools' they only let their buddies in so they can each scratch each others backs year after year. Get your facts straight.
- dylbrwn2, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7As another Alabama fan, I completely agree with you.
- deweyhewson, on 01/08/2009, -1/+7Utah isn't a Mormon school, and the majority of Salt Lake City residents aren't Mormon, either.
- jkr801, on 01/08/2009, -2/+8Uh we beat our bowl opponent..Hawaii did not so it does mean something
- UtahApocalyse, on 01/08/2009, -4/+9Thank You!! as a proud of our 2008 National Champion Utes I must say its nice to find a opponent giving respect rather then excuses.
- bsolidgold, on 01/08/2009, -2/+7If your'e calling TCU, Oregon State, BYU and Alabama 'Cupcakes' then you have no idea what you're talking about.
- jkr801, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6http://sports.espn.go.com/espnmag/story?id=3815656
- inigomntoya, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6So the stakes are lower in a bowl game?
- fadetoone, on 01/08/2009, -1/+6They could still keep the major bowl games by making them the final games... 2 semifinals, 1 championship, 1 consolation championship (for the semifinal losers)... Hell, they could make every other playoff game a minor bowl.
- jkr801, on 01/08/2009, -0/+5Why do we need to when we can beat everyone outside of it haha
