- heyblue, on 12/03/2008, -1/+76UCLA has agreed to call a timeout to start the game to even it out.
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/allthingstrojan/20 ... - insomniac8400, on 12/03/2008, -6/+42What a stupid punishment. You either deny them the right to walk on the field, or fine them money. You don't alter the game itself by taking away time outs. This is going to end very badly if the game is close and people think those time outs would have changed the outcome.
- ems8, on 12/03/2008, -2/+23as an SC fan, i can't believe i'm saying this: thats cool of ucla :)
- mindpuzzle, on 12/03/2008, -1/+21I was thinking they would play with 10 just to make it fair.
- metapop, on 12/03/2008, -1/+19what a bizarre choice of punishment for such a minor crime... at least UCLA is going to burn their timeouts too.
- scoottie, on 12/03/2008, -3/+20I did a double take when i got to the part about losing a timeout. Its logical but i was expecting a monetary fee.
- diulei, on 12/03/2008, -1/+13Yea all those top 50 schools are just terrible.
/s - pamon, on 12/03/2008, -3/+14it's called tradition in this series. They did it in '82. Should be fun. UCLA's season is a bust so might as well honor tradition in this great rivalry game. GO USC!
- rolf, on 12/03/2008, -2/+12The teams either follow the rules or they don't. They know they're being punished ahead of time and doing it anyway, so they're taking the chance.
Besides, the other team is offering to even it out by calling theirs in the beginning, when it's useless. - theotheragentm, on 12/03/2008, -1/+11So if UCLA wanted to wear USC's home jerseys too, could they do that at the price of a timeout? That might be the only chance we have to win this year, trickery!
- brandar, on 12/03/2008, -1/+10Major D1 schools make a lot of money off of marquee sports like football and basketball. Athletic programs are usually designed to pay for themselves (or wealthy donors foot the bill).
- batman1211, on 12/03/2008, -1/+8There is a "gentleman's" agreement that the other team will immediately take a time out so that it would equal out. It is the price to pay to preserve a tradition like that.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -1/+8Logical? *****. A team should be able to wear whatever the hell it wants, as long as it's distinguishable from the opponent's garb.
- dissolved, on 12/03/2008, -2/+8Very cool of both coaches.
Go Bruins! - AManOfLOP33, on 12/03/2008, -1/+6They actually only lose a timeout during the opening kickoff; not each half. Thank ESPN for stirring up the ZOMG WHAT IF SC TRIES TO KICK A LAST SECOND FG BUT ARE OUT OF TIMEOUTS???? Good move by Coach Neuheisel to call a timeout at the start of the game just to even it out.
- Pzycho, on 12/03/2008, -1/+6Penalty declined?
- imnojezus, on 12/03/2008, -1/+6He's an SC fan, so he was holding back from calling them fUCLA. Consider it a compromise. And yes, it is really cool of them.
FIGHT ON! - nightofbogie, on 12/03/2008, -2/+6I hope Neuheisel shows his colors and keeps the time out. Go Bruins.
- batman1211, on 12/03/2008, -1/+4The non penalized team will then take an immediate time out so that it will equal out. I think it is cool. This has been talked about on many sports boards.
- FoxtrotYankee, on 12/03/2008, -2/+5"FTW" isn't a backward reference to "WTF". It means "for the win".
Welcome to the Internet. - kolop1, on 12/03/2008, -1/+4I have an idea. Lets take something that might be fun for the fans and penalize the team for doing so. I think it's time for the old hats that run these sports leagues to either go away or get with the times.
- rda52, on 12/03/2008, -1/+3I'm pretty sure most Division 1 powerhouses are profitable, I would include USC and UCLA in that group.
- sterni, on 12/03/2008, -3/+5Awesome!.. That's Big Balls Pete for ya!
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2jersey color won't change the fact that USC is going to win, with or without 3 timeouts per half.
- Mark2600, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1***** Atlanta!
- ATLien74, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1***** You!
- gkiltz, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2That is part of the Tradition of College Football!
When I first started watching USC vs UCLA was back in 1966! My trend-hating parents WOULD NOT purchase a color set until we moved to a city where PBS was on UHF and we needed a new set anyway! That was 1970!
If I remember right, There was more than one year when, if you had B&W, it was hard to tell who was who!
UCLA did not put the letters "UCLA" on their helmets in those days. You had to look at which side had the names on the back of the jerseys! A real bitch with the resolution you could get with no outdoor antenna in those days!! - aliasfallen, on 12/03/2008, -2/+3Someone tell the Raiders not to wear home color black at home when it is hot as hell in the beginning of the season and the sun is beating down on the field. =) I guess home colors aren't always the best thing to do.
Great of both UCLA and USC to agree to go back to tradition. Go Bruins! 2006 results again?! =) - insomniac8400, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1No. You fine them hard. A big enough fine would easily get them to wear their normal jersey. Two lost time outs does nothing, but possibly alter the game. It's not enough to encourage them not to do it. But it will piss off the fans if the outcome is changed. If they were threated with a 100 million dollar fine, they would have the correct jersey on real fast.
- scoottie, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1i never said they shouldnt be able to wear what they want but rules are rules. so until the rule gets changed yes its a logical punishment for violating a rule rather than making the University pay money
- mixpix405, on 12/03/2008, -5/+5Go Bruins! Down with USC.
Roll Tide, Roll! - jefbob, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1I agree with willynilly, at the very least, if both coaches are willing to sign off on it (and both seem to be in this case) it shouldn't be an issue.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -2/+2How much of a tradition could it be if they haven't bothered doing it for TWENTY SIX YEARS!
- efice32, on 12/03/2008, -3/+2USC would win this game with 10 players on the field and no time outs. I'd say Pete's not too worried haha.
- brandar, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1Don't yuck my yum.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1While USC and UCLA are profitable, the two comments above me are EXTREMELY ignorant of the situation. The vast majority of NCAA programs do not make a profit. Men's basketball is the sport with the most profitable programs. (Because they have much fewer exxpenses due to smaller rosters, and many more games to make money from.) Men's football stands at something like 15% of D1 schools make a profit. It is like basicaly the MAJOR schools, like the USCs, Alabamas, UCLAs, etc. And Notre Dame who has that ridiculous TV contract that shouldn't even be allowed by the NCAA. But other than ND, if a college is not playing for the championship pretty much EVERY year, chances are they are losing money on the program. Footbal is unprofitable mainly because they ridiculous hand out twice as many scholarships per year than people who actually ever set foot on the field while the clock is actually ticking. Pretty much no other sports makes a dime.
But don't take my word for it...this may come as a shock to most Diggers...but I will actually back up my words with SOURCES!
http://thebigeleventh.blogspot.com/2008/05/number- ...
And while granted that is a blog, it links to a more reputable source. And it IS accurate. - inactive, on 12/03/2008, -6/+5The Men of Troy FTW!
- twiztidsinz, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1It's called an investment.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -2/+1I would like to wear their jerseys each day.
- bowlesman11, on 12/04/2008, -2/+1Go Bruins! You're our last hope of stripping SC from their Rose Bowl bid.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -4/+2"WTF" backward: not funny then, not funny now.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -3/+1That is just the OPPOSITE of a smart comment. Monetary fines don't do a ***** thing to thwart bad behavior at that level . Both with big time colleges like that or professional athletes. If you want to deter rule breaking, you hurt their chances of winning a game.
- TsuruchiBrian, on 12/03/2008, -7/+4I went to UCLA, and I couldn't care less about what color the jerseys are. This is one of the few things even more meaningless than this whole contrived UCLA vs. USC rivalry.
In conclusion, sometimes traditions are totally gay. - inactive, on 12/03/2008, -6/+3It's "UCLA". WTF is ucla?
- brandar, on 12/03/2008, -5/+1It's a little shady that Pete Carroll announced it to the media a week before the game without consulting it and finalizing things with Rick Neuheisel. The coaches had talked about it a few months ago, but all talk had died before Carroll sprung this one on everyone.
- Skurt, on 12/03/2008, -7/+2USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC! USC!
- zwgraham, on 12/03/2008, -7/+2Fine a school??? WTF do you think this is, the NFL? School teams make no money; in fact, sports teams are money pits for schools... even in NCAA 1A. Ticket/merch sales help a little but definitely do not make an NCAA team profitable.
- FiremanJersey, on 12/03/2008, -7/+1Tradition? What tradition? The article states that this hasn't been done since 1982. This "tradition" is over 25 years dead. This is retarded. Just play with the jerseys you are supposed to wear.
