- Jabrams2, on 10/29/2009, -2/+105This is a really sad/inspirational story at the same time. More so sad though.
- jessemoya, on 10/29/2009, -1/+80It's a sad tale, but what makes it so touching is the integrity and dignity of both of the men. I think it'd be easy to try and place blame and be bitter about the situation, but it takes a real man to show respect like that.
- veggity, on 10/29/2009, -2/+61Sad tale. But what is up with his face in that picture?
- pjhorrex, on 10/29/2009, -4/+59You must be real fun at a party.
- krahzee, on 10/29/2009, -1/+44How is it his fault deliberate or not?
The other player hit him helmet first in the back when he went up to catch the pass, not the other way around.
"So it wasn't surprising that he lowered his helmet and buried it in No. 44's back. Gaines had gone up to catch a pass. The force from behind knocked the ball loose before he hit the ground.
Gaines scrambled to recover it, but the refs called it an incomplete pass. He didn't even notice No. 38 wasn't moving. Before long, the number would literally mean everything to him."
He just had the sad misfortune of being the player this guy hurt himself tackling. Kind of like a train conductor who has someone jump on the tracks in front of him. - Jabrams2, on 10/29/2009, -2/+41Get what they deserve???? Are you serious? They DESERVE to get paralyzed or die because they are playing a sport they love to play?
- endustry, on 10/29/2009, -4/+4120 year ago = a player unintentionally kills another player and it humbles him for life.
Today = Players sucker punch opposing players or smack refs in the face with their helmet on purpose and act like they didn't do anything wrong. - HurricaneDC, on 10/29/2009, -0/+31Seriously. I'm not a big sports fan but hell, if someone's not obsessing over sports they'll obsess over something else like reality TV.
- longbraker, on 10/29/2009, -1/+27FTA:
"Mullins would do anything to win. So it wasn't surprising that he lowered his helmet and buried it in No. 44's back. Gaines had gone up to catch a pass."
So, no, it wasn't his fault. At all. Reading comprehension, learn it. - ace00000, on 10/29/2009, -1/+24It takes a real stand-up guy to keep making that 3 hour drive after 20 years.
- jimmyb3, on 10/29/2009, -2/+24Spoken like a true nerd who got pushed around in high school.
- DankBuddz, on 10/29/2009, -2/+21Man, this comment sucks.
- pathouston22, on 10/29/2009, -1/+20Yeah! ***** escaping from reality to enjoy a football game. I think about starving children dying from AIDs in Africa 24/7...that's how I go through life. ***** being pre-occupied with a football game!
- d0kk3n, on 10/29/2009, -1/+18I was at that game. Sad day
- KahRahTay, on 10/29/2009, -1/+16*20 year(s) ago = a player unintentionally shatters his neck while knowingly trying to tackle another player in an extremely dangerous way (ducking your helmet into the other player as you hit them) and dies. the other player manages to feel guilty about it anyway.
- AmazingSteve, on 10/29/2009, -0/+15Solid guy that Gaines. I don't think he's sick in any way Chippy. I think it's been in pivotal moment in his life that we all eventually have when our own mortality is staring us in the face and grinning. I think he does this as a constant reminder to himself not to take it all for granted and that it could be gone at any time.
- DiggsOnlyJew, on 10/29/2009, -1/+16What have you done with your life that's so good for society?
- robwhite1979, on 10/29/2009, -0/+15You are: an idiot.
- HurricaneDC, on 10/29/2009, -0/+15That must be horrible to live with.
- DankBuddz, on 10/29/2009, -0/+14Assuming you're telling the truth, I find it pretty fascinating that out of so many Digg stories someone comments that they were actually there. One of the few cool things that come from social networking.
- rockytop9808, on 10/29/2009, -1/+14For real. Look at his crappy anime icon, too. Proof enough.
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -1/+14I'm not a football fan, but jesus christ man, get out much?
- Shadic, on 10/29/2009, -0/+13You were wrong. Nice for you to blame a man for basically ruining/ending another man's life without reading the article.
- boecho, on 10/29/2009, -0/+12I live in Oxford (Ole Miss) and this story is legend here. Inspirational and sad are two very good words for it. The only intriguing thing I find is that some people have a hard time understanding the emotion that this man has felt for 20 years. It's a scar on his soul. We all have something that fashions our future. Mr. Gaines has this. If I die today, my grave will be dirty and unkempt in 20 years. Chucky's will always be clean.
- ericwindham, on 10/29/2009, -0/+11Can't remember if I was at that game, I was young. But I've met both Chucky and Gaines. My fraternity sponsored the Chucky Mullins Courage Award while I was at Ole Miss, and Gaines always came and spoke at the banquet. Both are great men.
- lukas88, on 10/29/2009, -0/+11People have a difficult time predicting what their facial expression looks like unless they practice in a mirror. I thought I was a smiley person, turns out I am just staring everyone down.
- CrazedLeper, on 10/29/2009, -0/+9Deep. Everyone should learn to love and value life so. Self included.
- sgtbutterscotch, on 10/29/2009, -0/+9Anyone will acknowledge that there are more important things than sports, even they very athletes that participate in them.
"People obsessing over filling their brains with pointless sports statistics and ignoring the society that's melting around them."
I hope some time you realize this thought is not original and that there have always been people needlessly whining that society is going to hell in their own generation. Get off you doomsday soapbox and go do something about it yourself if it's something you believe in so much. - CaviMike, on 10/29/2009, -0/+8That's what a bad-ass mofo looks like when he's sad.
- Aryman104, on 10/29/2009, -0/+8I wish I could hate you forever.
- longbraker, on 10/29/2009, -0/+8Reading comprehension has nothing to do with my (excusably) poor timing in this instance.
- inactive, on 10/29/2009, -0/+8He has survivors guilt.
- kevro, on 10/29/2009, -0/+8At first I though that Gains had Tacked him so hard that he left him broken but it was Mullins who tackled gains improperly and shattered his neck. I think There's two tragedies hear. One leaving a man badly hurt to die two years later and one leaving a man guilt ridden for the rest of his life.
- PointGiven, on 10/29/2009, -1/+8Because you're working with Doctors without Borders or UNICEF, right?
- smacksaw, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6Dude you wanna join my fantasy league?
- soonermandan, on 10/29/2009, -1/+7i dono man. Not many people can say they inadvertently killed someone playing a game. sad story
- SpruceCaboose, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6http://www.rivals.com/uploads/1036/97567.jpg
Sure doesn't look like a spear to me. Seems like a great hit that went horribly wrong. - Turious, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6Well said.
- lukas88, on 10/29/2009, -0/+6It sounds like Mullins collided with Gaines' back, head first. Gaines didn't actually hit him, so I am not sure he feels responsible for what happened (nor should he). It sounds like he feels a connection not out of remorse but out of compassion.
- Tubal22, on 10/30/2009, -0/+5Another idiot.
The one that lived is the one that was up in the air trying to get the ball.
The one that died is the one that was trying to tackle him. - walshgopher, on 10/30/2009, -0/+5Mullins drove himself headfirst into Gaines' back while Gaines was making a catch. It was an accident.
- KahRahTay, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5it's an awful and sad story, but all Gaines did was have a back strong enough to shatter a smaller kid's neck when the other kid intentionally buried his head during a tackle. it'd be like making a yearly pilgrimage to the grave site of someone who died of a heart attack while he tried to punch you.
- SooperSonic, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5FTA: "There have been times I have had to hitchhike because I ran out of gas, had blown out tires, my car's broken down," Gaines said. "But I always make it."
I think there would be plenty of people who would be more than happy to give him a ride. - apetrie, on 10/29/2009, -1/+6I really don't like football. That being said, you are being a total douche. Your rant about people caring too much about statistics has nothing to do with how this kid hurt himself playing either. Yeesh.
- boecho, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5I am from oxford (Ole Miss). I wasn't there, but damn near my entire family was.
- dhartin, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5can someone explain to me the purpose of filling these threads with spam?
- CaviMike, on 10/29/2009, -0/+5He tries to explain it but if the person needs an explanation, they obviously have none of what the answer is. It's called respect.
- EverTheCynic, on 10/29/2009, -0/+4A very sad story and an interesting counterpoint to the Pop Warner submission:
http://digg.com/football/The_Hardest_Pop_Warner_Hi ...
Especially since most of the comments for that submission are along the lines of "quit crying, you little baby," whereas most of the comments here are respectful and solemn. I guess the lesson is that you only deserve sympathy if you die? - PatrickFlorida, on 10/29/2009, -1/+5That hit me where it hurts.
- AmazingSteve, on 10/29/2009, -1/+5Not as much as Nickelback though.
