- CMICHPROF, on 12/04/2008, -0/+19Despite my moniker, I'm a professor at Auburn. Having grown up with REAL football futility (two degrees from Indiana) I am shocked at how myopic and small the money people here are about football. TT's players graduated, they won bunches of football games (5 more points and the record would be 8-4 this year) and they fired this guy. There's no money at the university to pay professors to teach extra classes, Alabama is a state with wide-spread racially based poverty as a dominate theme, the economy is in the toilet, but we can find $5.2 million to make TT go away. Idiots.
- wicketr, on 12/04/2008, -2/+17We are getting alot of flack in the media for the firing, but this is the culmination of a lot of different things that the national media hasn't really paid attention to. We've had 5 different offensive coordinators since 2001. Only 2 of which worked: Petrino and Borges. All but Petrino were fired. We had the 5th worst offense in the nation at scoring TDs.
Our position coaches are awful but Tuberville will not fire them. None of our WRs have ever known how to run a proper route and every NFL scout has told our players that. Our coach is letting these guys NFL chances fall by the wayside.
Tuberville has been doing less recruiting and more retiring in recent years and it has begun to show on the field. We have no QB on our team that would be in the two deep rotation at any of the SEC schools. Essentially, things have begun to rot from the core, and a 5-7 season was not an apparition.
Auburn is 13th in win percentage of all schools of all time. Auburn deserves better than a coach who wins 1 conference title in 10 seasons given that the biggest rival across the state has been on serious probations for the majority of his tenure. - inactive, on 12/04/2008, -5/+16Uh, you do realize that Auburn beat Alabama in the previous SIX Ironbowl games, yes?
- seefresh, on 12/04/2008, -2/+13Being from Auburn I can tell you that everyone I know is pissed. They loved Tuberville. And, no, he didn't step down.. he was forced out thanks to money giving influences in the Auburn area.
- Ljay90, on 12/04/2008, -2/+13Tommy Tuberville's accomplishments at Auburn:
Perfect season (2004)
Four SEC West Titles
1 SEC Title
5-3 in Bowl Games
2 Seasons under .500 (Out of 10)
7-3 against Alabama (including a 6 game streak against Alabama up until their loss this year)
AND HE DESERVED TO GET FIRED!!!?!?!!!? - krisstanleyau, on 12/04/2008, -0/+10Does Bo know coaching?.....
- Ljay90, on 12/04/2008, -0/+9and somehow, that fatass Charlie Weis still has his job.
- SimplySteller, on 12/04/2008, -0/+8I am a student at Auburn, i really hate to see Tub go, he's a nice guy and a good coach, it is just time for a change.
- Lith25, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6I go to school at Alabama and am a huge fan of the Crimson Tide. However, I actually liked Tuberville. This move makes absolutely NO sense in my opinion. He's had 10 great years in the past, and beat Alabama 6 times in a row. So he had a bad year, everyone has bad years.
Auburn isn't going to find anyone who can beat Saban now. There's no one available to hire. - tEhKewleSt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+6You should be more carefree
- TheRedNewt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5That's my thing: I understand being frustrated with some of Tuberville's actions, especially with offensive coordinators, over the past years, but there doesn't seem to be any great coach available to replace him.
Mike Leach's name is getting thrown around a good bit, but he's having one great season. He hasn't shown consistency, and I don't know if he will measure up to the SEC defense week in and week out. He's just untested as far as a high-profile job goes, but he has gotten good recruits.
My biggest concern is that Auburn goes into the coaching merry-go-round that Alabama was stuck in for years. They need to hire someone that will stay, and they will want to stay, for years to come. - spazc, on 12/04/2008, -3/+8WAR DAMN EAGLE!!!
- Lynx34, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Tigers = Mascot
War Eagle = Battle Cry
Plainsman = Newspaper?
Want a team with mutiple mascots? Bama. Elephants and.... a rise in the ocean's elevation due to the gravitational pull of the moon that happens to be red. How about Tennessee? The Volunteers and they've got Smoky the Dog in addition to their Volunteer mascot. There's much more mascot confusion in the SEC outside of Auburn. - Ljay90, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5Can't wait to see us against Alabama, and then the winner give the SEC ANOTHER National title.
It's a shame we couldn't beat up on another Big Ten team though. - TechGrrl, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5then you must have a lot of time on your hands to click on a random story you couldn't care less about and submit a comment on it
- TheRedNewt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5It's a case of Auburn wanting to be elite. That's not really elite. They think they can be a Florida, Ohio State, Texas, etc. They're not. They look at the fact that Tuberville lost 3 times in the SEC championship game. They also look at the fact that he failed to produce a National Championship. They get angry.
It's quite ridiculous really. The athletic department needs to understand that they just aren't there yet. The only way forcing Tuberville would make sense after this season is if some big name coach was available or interested. Otherwise, it's completely boneheaded.
I do understand that Tuberville never really got it together on offense, especially in recent years, but again, who out there is better? - Hillbert, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Guess its a end of a era, Fulmer, Tuberville gone, whos next??
- CMICHPROF, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4I didn't say university funds were being used. I'm saying that the people who can write a check for five million bucks could do a lot of good with that money that doesn't involve a boy's game.
- priceev, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4no, you can't.
- maverick999, on 12/04/2008, -0/+4Agreed. Tuberville was the man. This was obviously a rebuilding year, but the AD is obviously way too impatient. It sucks...
- daivos, on 12/04/2008, -2/+5Auburn fans are so spoiled. What a terrible force-out.
- AUAviator, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4You aren't kidding. Everyone loved Tubbs! He was classy. I'd rather lose with integrity and grace than win with the behavior of many of the coaches in college football.
Auburn has also allowed what was once one of the best collegiate aviation programs in the nation to start falling apart. Yes, aviation is not very profitable. Since when did money become more important than education in higher learning? - darkcooger, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3They released something official yesterday (Wednesday). He resigned, but he got the $5.1 million buyout anyway. A "good will" gesture, I guess. Fulmer and Croom both resigned and got their buyouts, too.
- TheRedNewt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Agreed. I'm a student at Auburn, and the athletic department and fanbase is shockingly fickle when it comes to football. At the end of the day, they seem to expect USC numbers, and they are severely disappointed by anything else. There isn't even precedence for Auburn performing at that level, so the expectation boggles my mind. Oh well, I just hope we don't go through 5 coaches in the next few years.
- gametavern, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3First of all, the phrase is "I couldn't care less". As in, I could not care less about the fact you live in Alabama, even if I tried really hard.
Secondly. Go Horns! - stukdog, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4I always read "resign" as "re-sign" and it's confusing.
- kamakazitp, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4What Auburn needs to hire a dedicated coach like $aban? If he wins a NC at Alabama, he will immediately become bored with the program and will start to look for another challenge.
- RyanChappell, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3No it is a case of Tuberville's stubbornness finally catching up to him. For years he has played terrible QBs and be too reluctant to replace them. This time his crony assistants kept sabotaging every offensive coordinator, and he refused to replace them so they replace him! Finally!
- dse78759, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4This reminds me of Texas A&M firing Slocum, the guy who constantly had the team in bowls, at the top half of the polls, and kicking the Longhorns butts continuously.
They haven't come close to success since he left.
Welcome to the basement, Auburn. You're going to be there a while. - TheRedNewt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3The offense was definitely the downfall of his tenure. People forget that this offensive problem did not start with the spread experiment this year. To be the type of team Auburn wants to be, they need a coach that will build a much more balanced team.
- spazc, on 12/04/2008, -1/+4Well if you dont care then why bother posting?
- spazc, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3As Lynx34 said, we do have a mascot, Aubie the tiger.
War Eagle is our Battle Cry, and we have two eagles who embody that. Nova, a golden eagle, and Spirit, a bald eagle. One of the pair flies around the stadium before each home game. Not many schools can claim that. Nothing is more more exciting and powerful than cheering WAR as she circles the field, then Eagle as she lands on the 50. No other college pregame has something that pumps up the crowd as much as that.
War Eagle and God Bless - offrdbandit, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Yes, please bury me because I think college football should be about student-athletes getting a degree and contributing to society rather than training camp for the pros...
- RyanChappell, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Bad coaching. We have talent at QB and WR, but it is being coached down. A Steve Spurrier could come to Auburn and win 10 games easy next year, the talent is here, offensive coaching is not.
Defensive coaching is perfect I would not change a thing, but an offense that is one dimensional run only will produce very little in the SEC. - garyrmiller, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Auburn should try and get Bill Cowher
- jordanlgta, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2* could not care less
- RyanChappell, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2He has succeeded multiple times at mediocre schools. That and his impressive offenses is more than enough to qualify him. The question is "Is he the best candidate." Maybe.
- Ljay90, on 12/04/2008, -2/+4I'm sure Miami thought the same thing when the Alabama job opened up
- jordanlgta, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Thank God? Yeah because being undefeated at 12-0 is not the goal of a coach. /sarcasm
You're an idiot. - vanza001, on 12/04/2008, -5/+7War Eagle faithful should be devastated. Tubs didn't resign he was fired. You don't typically get your buyout when you up and quit. Auburn is still Alabama's little sister. They panicked because Alabama is back and they know they're going to also be back... back in mediocrity.
- elo91, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3auburn is like an aspiring actress who gave up her dignity for fame, and bobby lowder is her abusive drunk of a boyfriend. let him go auburn, just let him go. shoot him maybe? claim domestic violence. people will understand.
- brandonfiquett, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3Seems like most people I've talked to (whether internet, facebook, or on campus) are more concerned about the buyout, 5 mil.. come on!! The university has already been griping about money. Personally I think its just a stupid decision especially when you look around at the economy right now.. and Tubs has accomplished quite a bit! BAD DECISION AUBURN!!!! -
UPDATE: Have been hearing rumors on campus now that Tub is resigning instead of being fired, which would mean no severance pay. Right now i don't think anyone really knows whats going on. Hopefully the university will release something official tomorrow (Friday)!
-War Eagle! - gardnmi, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3University funds are not being used for the payout. Also that football team brings in more money in one weekend than you and I will our entire life.
- waketay202, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Bowden from clemson?
- jba68, on 12/04/2008, -1/+3Why the hatred for Leach. he's a quirky kinda guy, marches to his own Drummer. And to get 11 wins at Tech is pretty damn good.
Spread offenses will alway put up large points. His system was born in the sec under Hal Mumme dont you know. Not that Kentucky was a powerhouse, but they won a few games there in those years.
The spread is fun to watch, and the good thing about college ball is that you get to watch oddball offenses on occasion. Not that the spread is real oddball, but it is different from the others.
/not a tech fan - mpfarmer, on 12/04/2008, -4/+5One of the best games I've ever been too. I don't think I've ever heard a Rammer Jammer as loud as that one. Roll Tide!
- RyanChappell, on 12/04/2008, -1/+2Wrong Tuberville was for keeping his assistants that had ruined yet another offensive coordinator. Time for change! Many other hard headed mistakes like keeping bad QBs as starters. . .
