He's had 10 great years in the past, and beat Alabama 6 times in a row. So he had a bad year, everyone has bad years.

- TheRedNewt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+5That's my thing: I understand being frustrated with some of Tuberville's actions, especially with offensive coordinators, over the past years, but there doesn't seem to be any great coach available to replace him.
Mike Leach's name is getting thrown around a good bit, but he's having one great season. He hasn't shown consistency, and I don't know if he will measure up to the SEC defense week in and week out. He's just untested as far as a high-profile job goes, but he has gotten good recruits.
My biggest concern is that Auburn goes into the coaching merry-go-round that Alabama was stuck in for years. - wicketr, on 12/04/2008, -2/+17We are getting alot of flack in the media for the firing, but this is the culmination of a lot of different things that the national media hasn't really paid attention to. We've had 5 different offensive coordinators since 2001. Only 2 of which worked: Petrino and Borges. All but Petrino were fired. We had the 5th worst offense in the nation at scoring TDs.
Our position coaches are awful but Tuberville will not fire them. None of our WRs have ever known how to run a proper route and every NFL scout has told our players that. Our coach is letting these guys NFL chances fall by the wayside.
Tuberville has been doing less recruiting and more retiring in recent years and it has begun to show on the field. We have no QB on our team that would be in the two deep rotation at any of the SEC schools. Essentially, things have begun to rot from the core, and a 5-7 season was not an apparition.
Auburn is 13th in win percentage of all schools of all time. Auburn deserves better than a coach who wins 1 conference title in 10 seasons given that the biggest rival across the state has been on serious probations for the majority of his tenure.- TheRedNewt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3The offense was definitely the downfall of his tenure. People forget that this offensive problem did not start with the spread experiment this year. To be the type of team Auburn wants to be, they need a coach that will build a much more balanced team.

That being said, I was hoping Auburn would get rid of him. I'm going to relish Auburn's turn doing the 6-7 year "where the hell are the coaches" dance as their program continues to flounder.
Oh by the way, this to the Auburn AD: please hire Mike Leech. Please try to bring in another spread offense. - RyanChappell, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Bad coaching. We have talent at QB and WR, but it is being coached down. A Steve Spurrier could come to Auburn and win 10 games easy next year, the talent is here, offensive coaching is not.
Defensive coaching is perfect I would not change a thing, but an offense that is one dimensional run only will produce very little in the SEC.

Spread offenses will alway put up large points. His system was born in the sec under Hal Mumme dont you know. Not that Kentucky was a powerhouse, but they won a few games there in those years.
The spread is fun to watch, and the good thing about college ball is that you get to watch oddball offenses on occasion. Not that the spread is real oddball, but it is different from the others.

They think they can be a Florida, Ohio State, Texas, etc. They're not. They look at the fact that Tuberville lost 3 times in the SEC championship game. They also look at the fact that he failed to produce a National Championship. They get angry.
It's quite ridiculous really. The athletic department needs to understand that they just aren't there yet. The only way forcing Tuberville would make sense after this season is if some big name coach was available or interested. Otherwise, it's completely boneheaded.

WIKTR's post above describes the reality underneath the numbers. Even great coaches lose their way. As a Dolphins fan it pains me to acknowledge that Shula frankly sucked in his last three years as coach there - but it is true nonetheless - even though he never had a losing season.
As a BAMA fan it also pains me to have to admit that MIKE Shula...sucked as head coach. That last point also is a huge contributor to Auburn's 6-0 record against the Tide until this year. You could easily lay 3 of those squarely on Shula's caoching (recruiting sanctions not withstanding).

Having grown up with REAL football futility (two degrees from Indiana) I am shocked at how myopic and small the money people here are about football. TT's players graduated, they won bunches of football games (5 more points and the record would be 8-4 this year) and they fired this guy. There's no money at the university to pay professors to teach extra classes, Alabama is a state with wide-spread racially based poverty as a dominate theme, the economy is in the toilet, but we can find $5.2 million to make TT go away. Idiots.

At the end of the day, they seem to expect USC numbers, and they are severely disappointed by anything else. There isn't even precedence for Auburn performing at that level, so the expectation boggles my mind. Oh well, I just hope we don't go through 5 coaches in the next few years.

Want a team with mutiple mascots? Bama. Elephants and.... a rise in the ocean's elevation due to the gravitational pull of the moon that happens to be red. How about Tennessee? The Volunteers and they've got Smoky the Dog in addition to their Volunteer mascot. War Eagle is our Battle Cry, and we have two eagles who embody that. Nova, a golden eagle, and Spirit, a bald eagle. One of the pair flies around the stadium before each home game. Not many schools can claim that. Nothing is more more exciting and powerful than cheering WAR as she circles the field, then Eagle as she lands on the 50. No other college pregame has something that pumps up the crowd as much as that.

The university has already been griping about money. Personally I think its just a stupid decision especially when you look around at the economy right now.. and Tubs has accomplished quite a bit! UPDATE: Have been hearing rumors on campus now that Tub is resigning instead of being fired, which would mean no severance pay. Right now i don't think anyone really knows whats going on. Hopefully the university will release something official tomorrow (Friday)!

In all seriousness, though, I really hope Tuberville just retires from coaching altogether. The last thing the NCAA needs is him turning another football program into Chop Block University. He'll probably end up at Miss St., though...and they'll probably beat Auburn next year, hahaha.
