- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+73good for him; he can buy dad, new fishing gear for father's day.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+57my feelings exactly...
If only more people spent time with family traditions.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47Why does he really need to be there? His appetizer-eating skills in the green room going to help him move up or down the draft boards? More power to him for waiting until he actually is under contract before he starts earning money for the league by showing his face on TV for their events.
- nuclearpenguins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45I too do this every year with my father. I understand this guy completely. Being adults now ourselves, we come to realize that our fathers are older and we only have a limited amount of time with them left. So we have to cherish these special times with them while we can.
That and last year he caught more than I did and I have to show him up this year! - canselmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+42I commend this guy!! It is refreshing that an athlete of that caliber would chose to spend time with his family rather than be involved with the hype surrounding draft day.
- jobenly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36He should send them a cardboard cutout of himself posing like he's holding up a jersey. Then they can just staple a jersey up and do the photo op. That's the only reason players really need to be at the draft.
- Feeedbaack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Kudos to someone who has their priorities straight.
- CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I don't think publicity has anything to do with it [not sarcasm]. The guy just wants to go fishing with his dad instead of sitting around in a suit acting surprised when his name gets called in the top 5. Sounds like a normal guy to me.
- DuraznosTJ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Family is more important than any job. Period.
- listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16As a Badger grad student, I got to meet him in the locker room this fall after a game. The first thing I noticed was: whoa. this guy is huge.
Then I noticed his attitude. The guy is the complete opposite of the stereotypical jock. He took the time to shoot the ***** with my little brother, who was trying to walk on to the team. Joe is even spending this Spring on the Track and Field team. He knows he's going to go top 5 in the draft, and he still wants to contribute to an unrelated sport. Joe Thomas is scary good... in more than one sense of the word. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Redline, the way I see it, this guy is demonstrating nothing but commitment.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Finally a football story worth digging.
- bjkrautk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15As a Badger alum, some team is going to be very happy drafting Joe Thomas.
- Wolfie351, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I skip work to go fishing with my dad all the time, no one ever writes a news article about me.
- CNAIF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Bravo is all I can say, a small measure of sanity in the sports world.
- jobenly, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18It's probably not his motive, but this really isn't a bad publicity stunt. I can't see how this would hurt his draft position. In fact, I can see some "good ole boy" coaches liking him more for it, as long as he doesn't apply the same logic to practices.
- TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9With all the "bad boy" problems in the press regarding greedy prima donna athletes, I would think that top caliber talent who would rather go fishing with his dad than be pranced around for photo ops would endear him to his potential new employer and their local fan base.
- fober, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This is football, not speed-dating.
- viet10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9you fool, he's not playing hard to get. he's still getting drafted, he's just not attending the draft presentation. regardless he's going top 5.
- devobergso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I'm proud of Joe and proud to be from the University of Wisconsin. He is definately one of the more humble players. Plus he was a business major here at the UW, not some slacker major like Agriculture Journalism along with the rest of the football players.
- buffyoda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Ron Mexico is no longer my favorite player.
- octico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Me being a father I would be SO proud of my son to do something like that.
- FikusErectus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, this guy has already impressed me. Spending time fishing with his father is more important.
- SillyRabbits, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's probably the last bit of free time he will have until the upcoming season ends.
- mletto157, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Of course he did. He's from Wisconsin. He doesn't care about the huge publicity or anything like that. He just loves the game of football - but not as much as he loves his father.
- ophilye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5digging down the comment because it doesn't look like a publicity stunt... I think he's right to honestly rather go fishing with his dad than let an optional "festivity" get in the way. There's going to be enough times later in his life when he won't be able to go fishing .. I say keep with your values. They'll take you farther in life.
- Puttzy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wonder if there will be some film crew interrupting his quality time at the lake. I hope for his sake people respect his wise decision and don't motor a boat into his peaceful little cove to ask him what he think about being drafted by his new team. That would be disgusting.
What a refreshing story in this day and age. - haggie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i thought new NFL draftees were contractually obligated to spend draft day with prostitutes (or groupies), drugs, krystal, and illegal firearms? did his dad sign a permission slip to excuse his absence?
- chucksmooth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4a drop in the ocean but still nice to hear
- owais, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4they could have at least taken a better picture and not him scratching his nuts.
- wgpubs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4that is awesome ... a guy that actually puts his family first!
- pooper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thats cool, cause I'm gonna go coho salmon fishing on Lake Michigan fishing next month... I totally understand him, cause it's really fun, lots of action, every cast...
- extreamgodofwar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That is awsome Family is way more important
- polyGone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They pay big money for the nut shots man
- imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"They'll take you farther in life."
For some reason I read that as "they'll take your father in life." - MatthewDuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm going to be proud to call him a Cleveland Brown...
- Joel32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I hope he takes plenty of Vitamin Water w/him on his trip.
- mediahooker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good for him! Maybe Urlacher will provide a vitaminwater hat for the annual event. Avoid the fine before he signs the contract.
- Boing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good for him and his dad.
- cardinalb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Never mind that where did they get the picture of him scratching his groin, could they not have got a better picture!
- Valleye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am gonna retire my Batch jersey and get his if the Lions sign, DAY ONE!
- tehnico, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Judging by his strength of character, I'm certain he hopes to go in round 1 or 2 based on his game performance, not his marketability.
- Cdog923, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You obviously don't know how hard NFL players work, year round.
- grendelwraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then you obviously have never met the guy.
And therefore have no valid way of characterizing his decision. - grendelwraith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm business is a part of life.
But for many people it is not their life.
I am glad to see someone who is willing to do what they want with their life.
Rather than being told what to do by others.
Makes you so much more of a person. - ajs508, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hes got nothing to worry about
http://www.fumbled.org - niko8778, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice to see an athlete who, loves his father to the point of skipping the party where he'll basically be getting guranteed millions
bravo - 4183612, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice naive thought but...... Thomas wasn't putting anyone but himself ahead in this deal. I thought that he had done the "right" thing too, but then he went and put a camera crew on his boat, a shrewd move to simply to increase his popularity with a gullible America. He got more exposure with this than anything he could have done in New York.
