- kavery, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Steve Spurrier #1 eh?
Buried. - simardown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6uh, no jim tressel? read the third comment down on the website to understand why his exclusion is preposterous.
i'm a die hard buckeye, but i can admit that pete carroll is BY FAR the best coach out there today. he took a USC program in shambles and created a near-dynasty of perennial front runners. yea, he has the SoCal weather and women to attract recruits...but, so does every other program in the south - especially Florida. - douggmc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I think the topic is a little broad ("top five college coaches"). It needs to have some further specific criteria .. like winning percentage, # of championships (not conference ... national championships), etc. Just silly to try and put out list such as this. With that said ... Richard Rodriguez and Urban Meyer ... give me a break. And no Jim Tressell after what he did at YSU and now OSU?!
- bitweever, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5My thoughts exactly.
- quacker912, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Dugg for JoePa
- wardsac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Buried as Inaccurate. No Tressell at all, not to mention Spurrier above Carroll or Tressell or Urban Meyer. This article was obviously written by somebody with no knowledge of college football. This looks like a list an 8th grade girl would throw together trying to impress her football-player boyfriend.
- TheBigBad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Charlie Weis? Ummm, no.
- fsumus, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Please! Joe Pa but not Bowden? The #1 winningest coach of all time? That's absurd. Watch out for us this year.
- eLau, on 10/10/2007, -0/+358 - 38.
- TheBigBad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3He should be honored for the great character and morals he bestowed upon Mike and Marcus Vick.
- jzimo, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6I guess winning at least 10 games every season isn't good enough to get Mack Brown on the list.
- TdiFFRob6876, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Mack Brown for rebuilding a solid foundation at UT and keeping it a powerhouse.
- barney74, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3First what defines a great coach. The ability to make a team more than the sum of its parts. For that fact you have to throw out Pete Carrol (great recruiter not so sure about coach) and Urban Meyer (won title with Ron Zook's players which Zook had top 5 classes all the time, at Utah yes he would've made this list)
1. Greg Schiano - Before last year you would've never talked about Rutgers Football. but take a look at what he has done with that program.
2. Gary Patterson - TCU was off the face of the earth in the college football world for a long time. Now it seems that have a program building
3. Kirk Ferentz - Every year his name is mentioned as to be the next Great NFL coach or the person to be taking over a power house program and leave Iowa
4. Jeff Tedford - How many times can a person who is out gunned either beat or scare the crap out of a top 5 program?
5. Mike Leach - The most offensively inventive head coach in college football.
*** Note these are my opinions. I am also a huge ND fan and note that I did not put Charlie Wies on the list. Now that all this is said please give me your ideas, not the ideas that the talking heads at sports news agency want you to think. And not your Homer ideas. - kevinpat, on 07/08/2008, -0/+2what about these guys http://www.collegefootballpicks.com/
- 03FightOn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ummmmmm Pete Carroll? Only one freak beat him running and that's Vince Young....hat's off to UT.
- kaplanfx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Agreed that Schiano is a terrific couch, also agree with the reply that he hasn't brought the program quite far enough to be considered Top 5. It's awesome for all of college football to have a good program at Rutgers. GO Scarlet Knights!!!
P.S. GO BEARS! - where is the love for Tedford??? - kevcowiffle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Greg Schiano took Rutgers from a laughing stock to a top 25 program in four years, and won national coach of the year last year. No love for him?
- FBombAndy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4And Mack Brown outcoached the supposed #5 coach in the game of the century.
- kaplanfx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2As I replied in above comments, I would call Tedford and Schiano the best up and coming coaches. You don't get in the top 5 until you can at least get your team to a BCS game.
-kap - Username222, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I know. This guy is too biased towards Georgia and its rivals. I would be amazed if this guy could even name a dozen coaches west of the Appalachians, even though he picked one coach on the Pacific (granted he had to win four BCS games to do it). Not saying that there are not a lot of talented teams East of the Mississippi, but for crying out loud, I think there are more deserving coaches. Then again, SI has gone downhill ever since they joined CNN. Can't stand them for sports.
- 03FightOn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Put that game (and season) squarely on Vince's shoulders! Brown's coaching prowess was "get out of vinces way".
- scoffey, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Quick find me a comment about Stoops so I can dig it... he finds ways to win even when he loses key players
- gl77, on 03/31/2008, -1/+3apparently sir, you cannot read. i did not say "anything" i said "#6....who gives a *****?"
- Beestie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Beamer's 0-7 against Florida State.
- DaneTrain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3College football coaching is contingent on recruiting, and in that department no one is even close to Pete Carroll. He also happens to be a great defensive coach, with excellent offensive minds to back him up. Look at what he's done in the years he has been at USC... How you can put him anywhere below #1 on a list like this is beyond me.
- DaneTrain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I'd say Vince Young had MUCH more to do with that than any coaching. That was just plain the best individual college football performance in history. That said, Mack Brown should be on the list, no doubt about it. He's a great coach who knows how to recruit great teams, and position them to win.
- gharding, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3PENN STATE!!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4They should all be SEC coaches as it's the most competitive year after year. Not to mention recruiting is nothing compared to USC, who else would you choose on the west coast, compared to trying to recruit someone while Tenn, Georgia , Alabama, Florida, etc are all knocking on the door.
- OUChevelleSS, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3You mean except for OU killing them so many times?
- dupeduperson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This is fake. Its from Reno 911. Who would really consider hiring JoPa - he is really old. (like yoda-old).
- H3BR3W, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How would the fact that he's transcended this plane of existence(to coach God's personal gridiron warriors) matter regarding his coaching abilities? The answer is it wouldn't. He was the best! He is the best! Long live the Bear! Roll Tide, emmer effers!
- Aurra, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I thought USC won that game, that's what the commercials for NCAA '08 said...
- NJHiker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Greg Schiano shouldn't be considered one of the Top 5 coaches just yet (lets see if the success continues this year), but I'd say he is definately in the top 10. He has done a remarkable job with Rutgers, and as a fan, I hope he continues to do well (Big East Champions this year, I hope!).
- TheBigBad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Any list that doesn't include Rodriguez isn't valid.
- jpop, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Good thing the writer's talking about COLLEGE football coaches then, huh?
- Wesside, on 10/10/2007, -1/+234 diggs and its over CPU usage, thats kinda sad.
- adam07, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2No Bobby Bowden, no digg. Buried as inaccurate.
- concretepoet, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Stoops should be in there.
- fiveprime, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Here's a little known fact that the Alabama faithful don't want you to know about - Bear Bryant has been dead, and therefore not able to coach football, for at least 20 years. He's been dead longer than a lot of digg users have been alive. That's why he's not on the list.
But feel free to nominate Nick "SaBear" Saban as a top 5 coach. He filled Alabama's 92,000+ seat stadium for the spring practice game. So surely he should be in the top 5, right? - bitweever, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Check the second comment....
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Weis? C'mon. When he coaches a team that wins a conference title...hell, when he coaches a team that's IN a conference and doesn't play all three service academies every year then he might be considered something.
Also, what bowl games has he won? - TheBigBad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Who'll stop the run? No one.
- H3BR3W, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No Paul "Bear" Bryant? Are you joking?!
- holyspamcans, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2GO DAWGS! digg me down, but I had to get one in there before we fall on our faces this season...
- jpop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Agreed. Maybe after a few more seasons at ND.
- FlaG8r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Tressell's had a lot of success, but he looked like a panicky moron in January.
- FlaG8r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I guess Zook was probably #6.
- lukewarmfusion, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The Super Bowl. Three times.
- ThatGeek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2even if OSU is on a downward slide, which they arent, they still would be better than most ever other team in the NCAA
