- DireWolf11, on 06/29/2009, -0/+29ridiculous that the 85 bears arent in the top 2
- CB810, on 06/29/2009, -1/+30No mention of the Baltimore Ravens... anywhere?
- chicagojack, on 06/30/2009, -2/+23'85 Bears....best defense any sport any year
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -0/+16How can you make a list like this without the Baltimore Ravens?
- mwerb6, on 06/30/2009, -1/+13No 2000 Ravens? Seems only defenses with cool nicknames were included.
- ninerskeet, on 06/30/2009, -1/+13Only teams with nicknames qualify for this list? Where are the 2000 Ravens and the 2002 Bucs?
- wmute, on 06/30/2009, -1/+132000 Ravens won a Super Bowl with Trent Dilfer... THATS a defense.
buried for inaccuracy - lupka, on 06/30/2009, -1/+12This list is a joke for that very reason. The entire 12-13 year history of the franchise has been defined by team defense and star players on that side of the ball, including an absolutely dominant Super Bowl Champion team that set all kinds of records and won with a mediocre offense. To leave them out is absolutely ridiculous.
- jkneis, on 06/29/2009, -0/+10A pretty good list, but slanted toward older teams. I would have liked to see a defense from the past 10 years included somewhere on the list.
- WillisDickfit, on 06/30/2009, -0/+9No late 90's/early 00's Bucs? Those teams had Derrick Brooks, Ronde Barber, John Lynch and Sapp all in their prime (and later on Simeon Rice). They were stifling.
- inactive, on 06/30/2009, -2/+11Something tells me your a little biased...
- JustinSane, on 06/30/2009, -1/+9Wow. No Ravens? Really? Buried for inaccuracy.
- RiMac, on 06/30/2009, -0/+8I hate the bias people have for the old teams. Some people have it stuck in their heads that older is better. The truth is that most of those players back then couldn't even make the team today.
Don't even bring up steroids, because there were probably many cheating back then. - woodsjransom, on 06/30/2009, -2/+10Chicago Bears was the best of them all.
- Synergy65, on 06/30/2009, -0/+7Well this list is one gigantic failure.
- sirswatalot9, on 06/30/2009, -0/+6The Ravens and the Bucs if the late 90's early 2000's both deserve to be on this list. They were both in the top 5 for at least 5 seasons. They have no nickname so I guess they're disqualified?
- sjps220, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5I'd like to see some bucs love please!
- blackgt93, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5What's with all the old teams? 2000 Ravens, 90's Chiefs, and 2002 Bucs could all displace teams on that list.
- Janinco, on 06/29/2009, -3/+8I would have put " The No-Name Defense—Miami Dolphins" in the number one spot, but then, I'm biased as I was at most of those games and it was sure fun watching them!
- duzytata, on 06/30/2009, -0/+5I'm a Packers fan and I agree with him.
- WoWii, on 06/30/2009, -0/+490s Chiefs?
Derrick Thomas, Niel Smith, Albert Lewis, etc - macaca, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4I am a Bears fan and one time in my life I agree with a Packers fan.
- Dealjobber, on 06/30/2009, -2/+5Aren't there only 3 teams that had both the top ranked offense and defense at the same time?
72 Dolphins
96 Packers
And the Patriots did that most recently, I believe, though I forget which year. - then00b, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4Dugg for the Steel Curtain being #1
(spoiler alert) - inactive, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4The Patroits have to be in the conversation. The have been playing great defense consistently under Belechek for years now and have the rings and titles to prove it. While I am not one of their fans- they are simply the team you have to beat and I respect them a great deal.
The 49ers had awesome defences in their glory years. Their secondary could shut people down cold.
I have to agree with the Bears 85 defense and the NY Giants when LT was in his prime. - woodsjransom, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3You got that right, talk about flawless defense *perfect* ^5
- smack1700, on 06/30/2009, -2/+5*Sigh* So used to this, Ravens get no love. But let's look at the numbers:
In the past quarter-century, only one defense has held opponents to fewer than 11 points per game. That team? Ray Lewis' Ravens. In 2000, Baltimore set NFL records for fewest points allowed (165) and fewest yards rushing allowed (970) in a 16-game schedule.
During the regular season, the Ravens shut out four opponents, then got better in the playoffs, allowing a total of only 23 points in four games, including their 34-7 victory over the Giants in the Super Bowl.
Also, ESPN listed 2000 Baltimore Ravens as #3 of all time...
http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/bestNFLdefense.htm ... - armadalol, on 06/30/2009, -0/+3as a football fan this list hurt me. as a ravens fan it insulted me.
- PhilliesBlunt, on 06/30/2009, -2/+5I know the Ravens get no love from the league, but this is just *****. Buried.
- Shadowhawk109, on 06/30/2009, -1/+4Lions?
I kid. :( - momedefome, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2'85 Bears , they had the SUPER BOWL SHUFFLE!!!!!
- MogusMaximus, on 06/30/2009, -0/+2"We knew ... in that huddle ... there was a group ... destined ... to apply the kind of pressure ... that had not been seen before."
I got really sick of that commecial - sketcher67, on 06/30/2009, -3/+5Any top 10 defense list without the Bucs is BS.
- FreddieD, on 06/30/2009, -2/+3Not only did the 2000 Ravens not make the top 10, but I dealt with an annoying delayed div-style popup half way through reading. I hate this article on many levels.
- PhoenixTx, on 07/21/2009, -0/+1I would say that's a fairly accurate list.
- sirswatalot9, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1Those 2 belong on this list no doubt about it. A few of those teams they listed didn't even when a title.
- handman1, on 06/30/2009, -1/+2I hate how people don't look at the time frame when people played. The fact is when these older teams played, they didn't have kids coming into the league that have been groomed to play football from day 1. Nor did they have the medical advancements that keep players on the field today.
- RiMac, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1"Greatest Defensive Teams of All Time," not "Greatest Defensive Teams of Their Time."
- cptcliche, on 06/30/2009, -0/+1I'm not going to deny that the Patriots have had solid defenses for years but I don't believe that they are 'top 10 of all time' caliber. They are great, no doubt, but if the '85 Bears and 2000 Ravens aren't on the list, the Patriots shouldn't either.
- soggydave2113, on 06/30/2009, -2/+2Where are the Saints on this list?! Come on man! The Dome Patrol!...
- chiggeybean, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1The 2000 Ravens were great. No doubt. But if defenses are measured by yards allowed, they weren't even the best defense in their division that year. The gaudy numbers were a product of the abysmal offense of every team in their division.
- toddc612, on 06/30/2009, -1/+1Why? Because that's the one team on this list you ever saw on television? And you're from Chicago?
Sorry, I don't buy it. - AlterLite, on 06/30/2009, -0/+0Looks like an Arizona Cardinals fan decided to comment today...
- TheWix, on 06/30/2009, -1/+0As the person who wrote the article stated the defenses are on the list for being consistently dominating over a three year period. He even mentions that as a reason for no putting the 2000 Ravens up there. I'd say the list is fairly accurate. Most of those defenses have a few hall of famers and were dominant for several years.
Although I'd say a better title would be Defensive Dynasties. Though I am not sure if the defense would have to win Championships/Super Bowls for them to be considered just defensive dynasties. - Twenty, on 06/30/2009, -4/+3I like watching soccer but I can't wait for football season to start.
- NickFrenzy, on 06/30/2009, -4/+3GO PACKERS!!!
- nickycakes, on 06/30/2009, -7/+5this list is a disgrace to football. and ***** the steelers.
- mybad4990, on 06/30/2009, -3/+1No Dome Patrol? FAIL.
