- postal21, on 04/29/2009, -1/+38They could probably beat the Lions...
- Trekhawk, on 04/29/2009, -0/+23Not to mention Chase Daniels. There were 2 Heisman front-runners who didn't get drafted. Goes to show that great college QB /= great NFL QB.
- ktriskett, on 04/28/2009, -1/+18Not a terrible list, but the authors disregard legitimate reasons why players weren't drafted. Case in point, Alex Boone has an NFL body and NFL talent, but he can't keep his drinking under control.
- wendelgee2, on 04/29/2009, -0/+12I can't believe noone took Quan Cosby...especially after they had him with Bill Cosby on draft day. So sad.
- mizuhri, on 04/29/2009, -2/+13The draft is hit or miss, no matter what round you are drafted in. This is a good list and I was really surprised Graham Harrell didn't get drafted. I mean would it of been a stretch to atleast draft him in the 7th or even as Mr. Irrelevant?
- ell0bo, on 04/29/2009, -1/+12The TT QB was shocking, but I was amazed no one picked up Jordan Norwood from PSU. He had the more reliable hands amongst the three senior PSU WRs this year, and the other two got drafted in the 3rd round I do believe.
At least he's a free agent in the Browns now. - BarlowBRob, on 04/29/2009, -3/+13Graham Harrell should have been drafted. He is a damn fine QB (coming from an OU fan) and I compare him to a young Drew Brees. Someone needs to give this guy a shot. Maybe the 49ers??? Reunite Harrell and Crabtree?
- mlvassallo, on 04/29/2009, -0/+9Quan Cosby going undrafted was a crime. This young man is going to make the fans in Cincy very happy. I'd love to have him on my team.
- daivos, on 04/29/2009, -0/+9I'd rather see a list of the best players actually in the NFL that were undrafted.
Defensive player of the year, James Harrison and likely HOF QB Kurt Warner would be on that list. Along with Jason Peters, Bart Scott, etc.
QB: Kurt Warner
RB: Willie Parker
WR: Nate Washington
TE: Antonio Gates - blah247, on 04/29/2009, -4/+10Ah yes, because the NFL really does a great job of keeping the players off booze and drugs..
- scheibs14, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5Pretty much all of these guys are signed as undrafted free agents now and will get their chances as most teams hold rookie mini-camps this weekend:
http://www.nepatriotsdraft.com/2009/04/2009-undraf ... - BedPost, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5I hate it when people say things like this. It's a very ignorant thing to say. The percentage of college players that go on to play in the pros is so small, and the step up is so huge. Even the worst team in the league, my Lions, would crush any college team. They're the worst of the best - but that's still infinitely better than the best of the decent.
- dlsmith2, on 04/29/2009, -0/+5thats not the point blah, its one thing if one of your employees develops a substance abuse problem over time but to hire someone who has a pre-existing problem, probably not a good management decision.
- robds, on 04/29/2009, -0/+4All-Undrafted? heck, those defensive players could make the 'All-Reefer" team. No team in their right mind in the post-Michael Vick "character" era will waste a draft pick on a player with multiple pot arrests (Maurice Evans, Terrill Byrd, Derek Pegues). One positive test for pot and they're out for a quarter of the season!
Most of the players on the list either had nagging injuries, very poor workouts (a surprising number showed up overweight) , bad attitudes (Arian Foster) or are carrying a significant amount of off-the-field baggage. - wendelgee2, on 04/29/2009, -0/+4I agree, I'm shocked. Apparently he didn't have good footwork coming out from under center. Seriously?? That's not something you can work on in practice???
The idea that the Pats signed Brian Hoyer of MSU (undrafted) over Graham Harrell seems ridiculous to me (and I'm an MSU fan). Spread offense or not, Harrell had a great arm, and made good decisions (Hoyer can say neither of those things). And who says that just becaus they run the spread offense that he's all the sudden a bad QB; the spread can be hard to run. You have 4 or 5 or 6 passing options on nearly every play. To negotiate that and read secondaries as well as he did says something. Also, are there not passing teams in the NFL lining up 4-5 wide outs regularly?? - Trekhawk, on 04/29/2009, -0/+4Sorry.
- minorthreat, on 04/29/2009, -0/+4what happened to the good ole days where you had fun, drank a few before you stepped on the field? Or quite a bit in Babe Ruth's case..
- TruckStuff, on 04/29/2009, -0/+4Harrell's biggest problem was that he couldn't throw the quick 10-yard out. NFL scouts view this pass as the most critical when scouting because it really shows a QBs arm strength and quickness. At the combine Harrell was consistently throwing them at the reciever's feet.
And his stats are bogus. He's the biggest system quarterback in the draft since Andre Ware. - engelb15, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3Wess Welker can only be successful in the Texas Tech system too... oh wait
- Barbarino, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3Looking back I think it came down to the spread offense they were running. Some team will give him a shot at a roster spot eventually.
- wendelgee2, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3Absolutely. Having a "habit" on a non-addictive substance shows a real lack of character.
- hawksfan03, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3chase patton (the backup this year to daniel) will be a better pro QB than daniel. He was in a situation similar to what Cassell had at USC
- hawksfan03, on 04/29/2009, -0/+3thank you
- hawksfan03, on 04/29/2009, -2/+5not a chance they would beat the lions. not even usc could beat the lions. I know the lions are bad but the pro game is so much better than the college game. the game wouldn't even be close
- DontPunchBabies, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2Otis, my man!!!!!!!
- WillWork4Food, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2Keep an eye on nose tackle Chris Baker, signed as an UFA by the Broncos.
Started as a sophomore at Penn St., but got in an off-field brawl and lost his scholarship there. Transferred to Hampton for one year, where he dominated admittedly inferior competition. - stustyle, on 04/29/2009, -5/+7I agree, but it is Chase Daniel, not Daniels. As a Missouri alum it bothers me when people get it wrong and it happens all the time.
- inactive, on 04/28/2009, -0/+2Great list. Reasoning I agree is a bit odd, but entertaining none the less.
- fuzzytank, on 04/29/2009, -1/+3Mitch King is a great player and I'm glad to see him getting some recognition and getting picked up by Tennessee. Mel Kiper, one of today's strangest tv personalities in my opinion (what does he do all year except for the month leading up to the draft?) picked Mitch King as his best undrafted prospect.
let's go hawkeyes. - wendelgee2, on 04/29/2009, -1/+3So, he got picked up by Cincy?
What a steal. - stustyle, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2As far as kickers go, what about Jeff Wolfert from Missouri? He is the all time most accurate kicker in the history of the NFL. He never missed an extra point and had a good FG percentage. The Bears signed him as a Rookie Free Agent.
- sandersdamnit, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2***** Charlie Daniels
- plasman, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2the lions are just the (arguably) worst of the the 32 best football teams in the world
- rjr5021, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2Norwood had the best hands in college football last year. But he is really small. The Browns got a diamond in the rough.
- jba68, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2He didnt get drafted so they wouldnt have to talk to Bill...
Hell Quan was the go to guy for Tex last year, has played pro baseball, and is a little older than normal. i wonder if this worked against him?
you would think not, since he has worked out all the dumb stuff that folks do when they are fairly young. I dunno, he should catch on as a free agent somewere... - hawksfan03, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2mitch king is a great player but he's an *****
/burlington, iowa native and hawkeye lover - hawksfan03, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2romo as well
also anyone taken in the 6th round or lower is someone teams missed on.
terrell davis and tom brady among numerous others - davewashere, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2You're right, it should be legal in the U.S. and not a banned substance in the NFL, but unfortunately that hasn't happened yet. I wouldn't draft a player with drug possession arrests -- not because I don't like their character, but because I couldn't afford to have him banned from the game for a quarter of the season. The players that have been caught know what the rules are and what's at stake, and they broke them anyway. That willingness to push the envelope just doesn't work in today's NFL. They'll get caught, and they'll be one of those players who just seems to be perpetually suspended.
- billricardi, on 04/29/2009, -0/+2Any other season, someone would have picked up Gano and Brantly. There were just so many kickers on the block this year, they got overshadowed. And I don't think they were the worst of the bunch either, a couple of the guys that were picked up had some nasty injuries that it isn't clear they're fully recovered from.
- FreddieD, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1I too was very surprised. The only thing I can think of is that PK's and punters are considered a dime a dozen, so much that it's rarely worth ever drafting one. He was absolute money his entire career, even from 40+. Unless the pro game requires kickers to have to totally change their angles and speed or something, he appeared way more comfortable from 30-45 yards than many NFL kickers.
When teams like OU and Texas were beating the living ***** out of us last year, he and Jeremy Maclin looked like the only players on both sides of the ball who were better than their counterparts. Pretty good for a walk-on originally on the diving team who went into Gary Pinkel's office one day and asked for a tryout. - RipcordNews, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1where's pat brown?
- Vulphaestion, on 05/04/2009, -0/+1Rod Smith, baby.
- FreddieD, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1Even going into the combine, Daniel knew that his only chance was to be an Antwan Randle-El type of player where he was a receiver that could be a quarterback for a few trick plays. Even Daniel's predecessor Brad Smith went into the NFL as a wide receiver. His style of play was perfectly built for the college spread offense, but not for traditional NFL style offenses where he actually has to take the snap from under the center sometimes.
And as mentioned earlier, god-given size makes a huge difference in the NFL and his size would NOT work in that league. Even with his high release point, NFL defensive lineman are way too good.
For an NFL-style quarterback, look at Missouri's new starter Blaine Gabbert. While Terelle Pryor got all of the hype as the top dual-threat QB in the nation coming out of high school, Gabbert was Rival's top pro-style QB recruit. - FlaG8r, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1The only name that surprises me is Aaron Kelly. 6'5", 4.49 40, 38" vertical and the ACC's career leader in receptions. The Falcons picked a gem off the street.
- roxgod666, on 04/29/2009, -1/+2Or off shooting themselves, dog fighting, and cocaine. This guy seems like an angel.
- cyoder, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1As a Hawks fan, I'm ashamed that I totally neglected to notice that he wasn't drafted. Someone will pick him up; don't know that he'll be a solid pro, though.
- Justinguder2, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1What about Chase Daniel?
- mordeci, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1P.J. Hill should make the Sants. He'll never be a star, but he's a big, north-south runner. Nice complement to Thomas/Bush. Reminds me of a young (before he sucked) Rudi Johnson.
- FreddieD, on 04/29/2009, -0/+1Marc Bulger was a 6th round draft choice. Not quite in Davis and Brady's league, but as a former pro bowler it's safe to say he exceeded original expectations.
- withinavoid, on 04/30/2009, -0/+1I would have drafted Quan Cosby for this hit alone in the OU game:
