- ironeus, on 06/16/2009, -2/+30Barry Sanders sure was fun to watch in Detroit. Many were shocked when he walked away.
- thefarouk, on 06/16/2009, -0/+21Steve Largent
He was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl seven times
When Largent retired, he held all major NFL receiving records, including: most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100). He was also in possession of a then-record streak of 177 consecutive regular-season games with a reception.

Dugg for Jim Kelly #12 greatest quarterback in Bills history - blakecr, on 06/16/2009, -2/+14John Elway...must be painful for you that in the last years of your career you managed to ***** up making this list.
- jimmies, on 06/16/2009, -0/+9For the most part, they sucked when he played there too. Unfortunate, because he was such an unbelievable talant.
- bicyclethief, on 06/16/2009, -1/+9And Detroit has sucked ever since...

- jimmies, on 06/16/2009, -0/+8Uh, what? That quote is spot on. He wasn't particularly athletic. He wasn't fast, he couldn't jump all that high and he wasn't strong enough to push people out of his way. He managed to get open and had some of the best hands the game has ever seen.
- inactive, on 06/16/2009, -0/+7Where's OJ?!
- hiphoc, on 06/16/2009, -0/+6Barry Sanders stuck around a hell of a lot longer than his offensive line did. People look at his style of running and fail to realize he was trying not to get killed. He danced a little bit in college behind Thurman Thomas, but he could hit the hole. Rarely did he ever have a hole to hit in the pros. If he had O line of Emmit Smith I wonder what his yardage would be?
- dse78759, on 06/16/2009, -0/+6Trivia : When Barry retired , it was initially reported that he wanted to be traded to a team capable of going all the way. Marino was still carrying the Dolphins, didn't have a running game, and 'trader' Jimmy Johnson was the coach.
It was probably the one trade he should have made. - jba68, on 06/16/2009, -0/+5not really trivia.
Lions were not going to let Sanders go anywhere. True he may have wanted to go elsewhere, the Lions were ok with just killing any football enjoyment the guy had.
I am sure Jimmy would have made the trade it it was possible - bdbr, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4Yep, OJ had over 70 touchdowns and over 10,000 yards. He was an amazing player to watch. Its sad what he's done with the rest of his life.
- ajonsey, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4Buried for being a stuck up prick
- jba68, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4Not to mention 2000 yds in a 14 game season, plus being Lt Dreben's sidekick
- JCEEZ, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4If Barry Sanders had a 1/2 decent team, he would have a lot of rings.... sucks
- hockeyfighter09, on 06/16/2009, -0/+4No Steve Largent?
- Findox, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Because he is a bad ***** you don't ever want to mess with. You know kids growing up tried to make fun of him growing up. Just ONCE I bet.
- joshf52, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3I didn't get past that babes photo set
- Peleus, on 06/16/2009, -1/+4Warren Moon... no time to win a Super Bowl when you're beating your wife.
- mwerb6, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Can you blame him?
- jedinate, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Dugg for Barry. At least Marino had his shot, Sanders never even made it to the show.
I refuse to cry for Jim Kelly, he had his chance(s)!!
I agree that it's sad he retired so close to the record. It would have been nice to see a healthy, still relevant Sanders crush the record. Much better than it was to see Emmitt limp his way to it. At that point Emmitt had nothing left in the tank and was only playing to get the record. - jba68, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Why bring cowboys into this? Lol you must be a 49'rs fan.
If and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas. - Crosshare, on 06/16/2009, -0/+3Yeah, real painful. Just made winning it that much more sweet.

- PubeStache, on 06/21/2009, -0/+2I too share your pain.
- ziggy88, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2no Tim Brown?
- jba68, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2You tear me, I want to bury you fro Bruce Smith, but Digg you for Childress...
- dse78759, on 06/16/2009, -0/+2Bruce Smith? Ray Childress?
- TobiasParker, on 06/26/2009, -0/+2Agreed.
- jba68, on 06/17/2009, -0/+1You can't factor a team being stacked for a guy. The fact that it was stacked is one of the reason he doesnt have as many stats as other guys. Additionally, not really his fault he's on a good team?!. Aikman was using 3rd down to Novacek, and Emmit got the ball alot...
And Swan and Stallworth were just on teams that threw the ball maybe 14-20 times a game, so they are not going to have the same stats as brown or Carter.
I'm def not a steelers fan by any means, and
College stats have no bearing on things. Brown was a good WR, and so was Carter. But not on the level of those guys.
Harrison I would put above Carter and Brown as well. I just didnt think of the guy....
And you cant really base everything off stats,as that doesnt always show the greatness of a player. - hawksfan03, on 06/17/2009, -0/+1watch fox on football sundays and carter will be the first to tell you wasn't the most gifted wide receiver. *****, it wasn't until buddy ryan released carter from the eagles that he even got that drive (he was a drug addict in case some of you don't know)
- nydwarf, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1This is a pretty decent lists. Gotta love that picture of Barry Sanders, how could anyone get into that position running at speed and not fall down?
- jba68, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1I dunno about that. awfully lofty praise for those two guys.
Monk, Largent, Pearson, Swann, Irvin, Taylor, Stallworth were all above those guys for starters. - MojoJonJon, on 06/17/2009, -0/+1I was one of the biggest fans of barry sanders. he was my idol and i held hope for him to return even 4 or 5 years after he retired. but one thing i noticed when i was watching what turned out to be his last season is he really was losing his ability to make EVERYONE miss. I remember in 3 consecutive games he had the chance to make the first defender miss and everytime that first guy got him. I think that if he would have kept going for a few more years he would have easily broke the records but we might have seen his insane skills decline. I'm kind of glad he left when he did because we didnt have to see him ruin his legacy, Emmit.
- redfan, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1I couldn't believe he never forced a trade to a contender. Just retiring like that still seems strange.
- sfasu77, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Or throwing 4th quarter interceptions in the playoffs and watching John Elway and Frank Reich perform the heroics. God it sucked being an Oilers fan. I still miss 'em though.
- bobdigi, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Denise needs to take her top off already.
- Bologner, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Imagine:
The Packers draft Barry Sanders instead of Tony Mandarich.
Barry Sanders, Brett Favre, Reggie White, Sterling Sharpe, Robert Brooks, LeRoy Butler, Mark Chumura, etc.
I bet they win 5 rings. - robEstyles, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1***** Scott Norwood
- ftwb, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1By what measure? Just look at where they rank on the all-time records lists:
Career receptions: Carter is third, Brown is fourth
Receiving yardage: Brown is third, Carter is seventh
Receiving touchdowns: Carter is fourth, Brown is sixth
In addition, Brown won the Heisman and the Walter Camp and was a nine-time Pro Bowler, while Carter was an eight-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro. I'd give you Marvin Harrison (who oddly enough you didn't mention, I assume it was a mere oversight), but most of the guys you listed aren't even in the same ballpark as Brown and Carter. Monk and Irvin are in the top ten, sure, but Swann and Stallworth? No offense if you're a Steelers fan, but those teams from the 70s (and they were great teams) had a lot of average-to-good players (Swann, Stallworth, Bradshaw) who benefited from being on a great team, but who individually were not great players. Good, yes, but not great.
Personally, in no particular order, I'd say it's Rice (obviously the best, I think everyone can agree there), Brown, Carter, Largent, Monk, Biletnikoff, Harrison, Owens and Moss. Irvin is in the conversation, but he's another guy who played on a team that was completely stacked, so it's hard to know where he really ranks among the all-time greats. - ftwb, on 06/17/2009, -0/+1Looks like we'll have to agree to disagree here. I am a Raiders fan, so I'm definitely biased, but it's a pet peeve of mine that Brown never gets the credit he deserves. He was one of the greatest college receivers of all time (first WR and one of only two to win the Heisman), and became one of the best professionals, despite playing on terrible Raiders teams through most of his career and being thrown the ball by journeymen QBs. Despite that he is near the top in every major receiving statistical category, and went to nine(!) Pro Bowls; that's more than Carter, Harrison, Swann, Moss, Owens, Irvin...well, more than any receiver not named Rice, if I'm not mistaken. Hell, he went to three times as many as the great Art Monk! But he was a quiet, classy guy (a sort of anti-TO) who played on a bad West Coast team, so he's always overlooked. I'm not saying there isn't room for debate about who the second through tenth best receivers are, but that Brown is rarely included in such discussions is absolutely absurd!
- bossm4n, on 06/16/2009, -0/+1Eric Dickerson!
- friday04, on 06/17/2009, -0/+1Awesome comment. Believe me, Elway read it and has sad eyes now.
