- PGPirate, on 10/03/2008, -0/+11People who have better things to do than to wait for a damn slideshow:
10. Rich Brooks, Kentucky
They may be great masters of the gridiron, but they're also the whiniest coaches in college football. At No. 10 we start with Kentucky's Rich Brooks. Last year he accused Tennessee of stealing the Wildcats' signals. This year, it was Middle Tennessee. Does Brooks really think stealing signals is the only way teams can beat the Wildcats?
9.Urban Meyer, Florida
Was all that whining in 2006 about getting Florida into the BCS title game an omen of things to come? After complaining about Georgia's perceived unsportsmanlike conduct for excessive celebration in last year's game against Florida, Meyer tacked on an unnecessary field goal with 25 seconds left in the Miami game and acted surprised at being called unsportsmanlike.
8.Bob Stoops, Oklahoma
Stoops' whining over a crucial possession call on an onside kick in the 2006 Oregon game was endless. OK, so the call went the Ducks' way and they scored a go-ahead touchdown. But the Sooners got the ball back and had a shot at a winning field goal on the final play, but couldn't prevent Oregon from blocking it. Still, it's not just that game that gets Stoops on this list. After all, his weekly facial contortions directed at officials over perceived bad calls are classic.
7. Mike Stoops, Arizona
Just how does a coach react when losing some in-state recruits to his rival? Whine about the unfairness of it all, of course. "Obviously, Arizona State has turned into a JC [junior college] and we are a four-year college," Stoops famously said. "According to all the players, they say it is easier to go to school there, easier to get in." But maybe they go to ASU because their team has beaten you four out of the last five years, Mike.
6. Nick Saban, Alabama
Slick Nick bailed on the Miami Dolphins after repeatedly insisting he would not be Alabama's coach, then whined about "being victimized a little bit here." Throw in his cheap shots at other schools by whining about how Alabama has tougher admissions standards than, say, South Florida, and bam! Saban has redefined the art of whining.
5. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State
Gundy must be thrilled he finally got some prime-time exposure. Too bad it was for his epic whining about some alleged inaccuracies printed by The Oklahoman. But Gundy's wasn't just any whine. It was a head-exploding mother of all tantrums. "I'm a man! I'm 40!" will forever go down as one of the whiniest rants of all time. Watch the legendary rant
4.Tommy Tuberville, Auburn
Tuberville's to-do list: Proactively whine about Auburn possibly not getting into the BCS title game after losing to LSU in 2005. Blame ESPN for the BCS match-up between USC and Texas. Blast Lou "the guy couldn't beat anybody in our conference" Holtz. Whine about the BCS system, forgetting that the SEC and its former commissioner were the driving force behind creating the BCS. Prepare for 2008 whine.
3. Les Miles, LSU
We love Les, king of the preemptive whines. Whine about your tough path for sympathy votes! "They (USC) have a much easier road to travel - I would like that path for us." Whine about the two OT losses last season "If you just give us ties, like in the old system, we are undefeated with two ties. Maybe that adds up as one loss." Leave it to Les to whine about how he wishes he had an easier path, then whine about how two ties equal one loss.
2. Rich Rodriguez, Michigan
"Being Rich Rod," coming soon to a theater near you. Scream "excessive" about the $4 million buyout in your West Virginia contract clause, then later admit that your Michigan buyout is the same amount. Claim "coersion" after signing a contract when your lawyers and agents were at your beck and call. Whine about death threats, then fail to provide proof. Pat self on back for getting an entire state to light couches on fire.
1. Steve Spurrier, South Carolina
Was there any doubt that the Ol' Bawl Coach would be No. 1 on this list? It's not just his railing against South Carolina's student-athlete admissions requirements that caused him to threaten quitting. No, it's his weekly wrath toward officials who make calls he disagrees with against his Gamecocks every dang play. Thank goodness his visor is made of kryptonite. - bpoteat, on 10/02/2008, -0/+10I don't disagree that Spurrier should be on there, but for what it's worth, he was completely in the right with the school admissions stuff. Spurrier didn't complain about the admission requirements. He complained that the admissions office told two recruits that they had met all the requirements and then a week before they were supposed to be on campus they changed their minds and told them that they didn't meet requirements. All he wanted was the admission policy to be documented and known - not to be altered in any way. Those two guys did everything they were told to do, thought they were good to go, then they got screwed...and it was too late for them to look at any other school. I'd be pissed too and he was right to complain about it.
Also, I'd say he whines about his own team WAY more than about anybody else. - rynTAU, on 10/03/2008, -1/+9I see a lot of SEC in there... How soon till the SEC fans start whining?
- sidewinderaim9x, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6What about Mack Brown bitching to get his team to pass Cal for a berth in the 2004 Rose Bowl.
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -0/+6The idiots who wrote this haven't got a clue about the history of that Oregon game. Bob Stoops talked about how bad the call was ONCE during a press conference the week after the game. After that point he NEVER, I repeat NEVER spoke of it again to the press. What the writer may remember are the fans complaining after the game and have confused it with Stoops.
- PGPirate, on 10/03/2008, -0/+5Thats because Big11 sucks
- eeemart, on 10/03/2008, -4/+9thie was a big, big empty hole where charlie weis should have been.
- HeDiggMe, on 10/03/2008, -2/+6I'm a man. I'm 40!
- Weezer1223, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4Notice how many of the coaches on here are some of the winningest coaches as well. Whining=winning?
- LooterMcBeer, on 10/03/2008, -1/+5No dumbass, he was complaining about things like the chop blocking and cut blocking that was going on regardless if you score or not those cheap shots ruin guys careers. When you have players at the talent level he does and you don't bitch about stuff like that you don't deserve to be on the sidelines of a major university.
- dvinnen, on 10/03/2008, -0/+4No Tommy Bowden. List is obviously wrong.
Burred for inaccurate. - AnthonyC, on 10/03/2008, -1/+5FYI the Rodriguez lawsuit was led by Michigan's athletic department and when they realized it would drag out and interfere with the season they dropped it. It was stupid for Michigan to do because it made Rodriguez look bad. Michigan ended up covering everything, the buyout, and the legal fees.
#2 on this list is very inaccurate. If anyone could find evidence of Rich Rodriguez whining after a loss please post it. - mpgorans, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4mike gundy should not be on there, he was defending a player who was "attacked" by a ***** reporter
- sombreroman, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Yeah, story buried for not including Mack Brown.
- stukdog, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3They are brothers. Mike coached with Bob at OU until he was hired at Arizona.
- Boing, on 10/03/2008, -1/+4Nick Saban should be closer to the top of the list... whiny bastard. I don't even like the Dolphins, but he totally screwed them over and bitched about it the whole time.
- dwrecktion, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3The comments on Rich Brooks of Kentucky don't follow logic.
- ethanator1088, on 10/05/2008, -0/+3The SEC got 6 out of 10. We win at everything :-)
- emericle, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3Rich Brooks thinks this poll is *****.
- anachronaut, on 10/03/2008, -0/+3"not a lot of Big 10"
Well, yeah... this isn't the "Most Overrated" list. But it was obviously written by someone with an axe to grind against the SEC (I immediately assumed it was written by an OSU fan, to be honest). - ispellkonfusion, on 10/03/2008, -2/+4You'd never see Jim Tressel on this list. Which I'd be more proud of if it worked to our advantage, but his conservatism has killed my Buckeyes in really important times of need.
- malschla, on 10/03/2008, -1/+3And not a lot of Big 10.
- macbookcoard, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2I love how exactly half of the SEC teams have their coach represented on there. I'm also proud that our Ol' Ball coach is number 1.
- malschla, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Couldn't agree more.
- oldhick, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Yeah, when he was at Florida he was a legendary whiner. But I haven't heard as much, but then again, he's not in the press as much.
- AuburnTigers, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2I was sure Pete Carroll would be on this list somewhere...
- rynTAU, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2and no Pac 10
- mescad, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2Of the two games cited, Kentucky won one (Middle Tennessee this year) and lost the other by 2 points in the 4th Overtime. That's hardly whining that "stealing signals is the only way teams can beat the Wildcats."
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2I attend the U of A. We do not win at football. ;)
- Veetus, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2I'm just glad Mike Bellotti from Oregon didn't make this list!
- yourfaceah, on 10/03/2008, -0/+2you, sir, are misguided at best
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -2/+3OU has 41 conference titles, 144 All-Americans, the most weeks on top of the AP polls than any other school and 7 National Championships and you feel sorry for us? LOL
- inactive, on 10/03/2008, -1/+2Not the U of A hahaha.
- MattFid, on 10/03/2008, -4/+5Rich Rod whines about his $4 million buyout from WVU that HE insisted on (as well as asking for the same buyout from Michigan). WVU may suck this season, but at least we got $4 million coming our way.
- AlexWills, on 10/03/2008, -4/+5So Urban Meyer can't complain when Georgia's team storms the field after their first touchdown of the game but Miami's coach can complain that they weren't able to stop a field goal at the end of the game against Florida?
- RunningboardV2, on 10/03/2008, -1/+2Jesus. Lighten up East Coast.
- oldhick, on 10/03/2008, -1/+2I always love it when Spurrier would whine about FSU or other teams trying to "hurt our quarterbacks"...
http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1208/is_n52 ... - "Spurrier complained the Seminoles delivered late hits and cheap shots to his quarterback."
http://espn.go.com/magazine/geno_20011125.html - "And later Spurrier all but accused Bowden and his staff of coaching up FSU players on the art of the cheap shot" - desertcoffin, on 10/03/2008, -0/+1Couldn't agree more on Mike Gundy, LoL.... Dugg!
- sousademiami, on 10/03/2008, -1/+2I don't think Spurrier has earned top spot since moving to SC. Maybe somewhere around 4-5.
- neognostic, on 10/02/2008, -7/+6Stoops of Oklahoma has to be #1. He was whining to the refs in the game against TCU even on touchdowns for OU.
- mattrmcg, on 10/03/2008, -2/+2Is Mike Stoops from Arizona Bob Stoops' brother? Wondering because of the name and because they wear that same goddamn visor hat.
- jhewell, on 10/03/2008, -2/+2You just named the TEN BEST COACHES in College Football.
- slide23, on 10/03/2008, -4/+3Wow this article obviously has a bias against the SEC. Buried
- Cerealkillr, on 10/03/2008, -6/+4I'm sorry but i do not see Rodriguez whining about his teams performance....
Just prepares for the next game. - gamben0, on 10/03/2008, -5/+2Les Miles, Mike Gundy, Bob Stutterpants.. I apologize for Oklahoma.
