I have a 80" projector I'm going to watch it on. With 50 of my friends. They can eat my ass if they don't like it. - LDanix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+304They must be taking lessons from the RIAA's lawyers.
- bbrosemer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+226The TV size is allowed to increase every year by 3.5% due to inflation...
- lawson23, on 10/12/2007, -2/+218What a joke!
Who here will live by this rule? Not me! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+115I *WAS* going to spend the superbowl setting up my FreeNAS, but now I'm going to invite over 20 of my closest friends to watch the game on my 56" Samsung. I think I'll grab the game off bittorrent too, edit out all the commericials and seed for weeks.
NFL Execs, you guys can go ***** off, ya donkey-raping ***** eaters. - aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+97Isn't TV supposed to be free, supported by commercials? Having more people watch the game and see the commercials is good.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+92A childhood with a 5 inch b&w tv?
- weddle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+70So, it is okay for a sports bar to show the game but not a church. Great PR move NFL.......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6410 Foot HD Projector, that's 120 inches to be exact. yes I'm compensating for something.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -32/+88How about we boycott their greedy asses. Boycott their advertisers products.
Who needs Pro football so bad that they are willing to be somebody's bitch.
Pro is overrated anyway.
Fug off NFL - aurrea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+47@ skyshock21
Don't forget to charge your friends an admission or you won't be "sticking it to the man". - saigumi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+36Bite my shiny metal 100" of projecting goodness.
Also, this is counter to my body's EULA which says that any manmade signal that passes through my body whether is is light, radio waves, television broadcast waves, etc... are mine and that I may rebroadcast, redistribute, acquire and store in any way or medium that I see fit a copy of those signals. Any broadcast that goes through my body is an acceptance of that EULA.
Since the TV towers are broadcasting those through my body and potentially causing me cancer or tumors, I hereby decree that they belong to me. So, who wants a Tivo'ed copy of the Super Bowl. - FlyboyP, on 10/12/2007, -4/+37No, RTFA:
"Aiello said the league has a longstanding policy against “mass out-of-home viewings” of the Super Bowl, even if the hosts don’t charge admission. The NFL makes an exception to that, however, for sports bars that show televised sports on a regular basis."
That's a bunch of crap. - vypergts, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27This happens a lot, as the NFL is very particular about public showings. It's a practice that gained fame by the **AA cartels suing restaurant and bar owners for playing music without paying ASCAP/BMI royalties. They can come down on you for showing their copywritten material en masse:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/02/01/nfl-shuts-down-churchs-super-bowl-bash-ratings-to-blame/ - bmh129, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28While I agree this is a ridiculous rule, make sure you RTA before you get too upset. This doesn't appear to affect what you do in your home. This is for "mass out-of-home viewings," which is better defined in the article.
Oh, wait, this is Digg. Proceed with jumping to conclusions. ;-) - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I will cause I'm too broke to afford a 55"+ TV in the first place!
- mcraigw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20
My home has a sports bar that shows televised sports on a regular basis... Yearly in fact. - DigitalRealm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Man I love the NFL, but sometimes they just simply fall and crack their skull open and then make really stupid decisions.
- GraceMolloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Ya it was on the news that they sent a letter to a local church who was advertising a free superbowl party. Frankly I would have told them to send lawyers. None of these cases have been taken to trial yet. The RIAA and surely the NFL must know that they can't win if it gets that far.
It's being broadcast for FREE, the viewers ARE watching your advertising, NO money is being charged ... Bring it On! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+24"Who needs Pro football so bad that they are willing to be somebody's bitch."
i do :(
honestly though this rule is similar to the Law that said you have to claim your cocain dealing money in your tax form. Yeah its there, but are people gonna follow it? i think not. - mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"If it's broadcast on MY airwaves then I'll show it to whoever I feel like. If I had a restourant then guess what I'd have a dozen TV's playing it, and their aint ***** they can do about it. This is a clear case to me they gave it to me by sending it in the airs to me so I'll do as a please. Of course I feel the same about all broadcast TV, thus the reason I download TV shows from the internet. The shows were already given to me all I'm doing is makeing it convenient."
That was my first thought. I own (a portion of) the airwaves they are using to transmit their product. It is being transported through my property and my body with only my implied permission. I think that once something is broadcast into my personal space, that could be construed as through my home/land or through my body, that I should be able to do whatever the hell I want with it. That would include broadcast TV/radio, satellite TV/radio, wireless phone calls/internet, etc.
Unless you can figure out a way to keep it out of my privately owned property you've given me license to do whatever I want with it. End result you either stop broadcasting stuff you don't want retransmitted (so straight to DVD, etc) or STFU. - XenophobicAlien, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17I have a 92 inch screen at home and I'm hosting a SB party.. Come arrest me you *****!!!
- aupton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Looks like the brains behind the NFL just reached the same level as the Boston Police dept...
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Just wait for the day that rights-protection gives you a message "Your TV is too big to view this program. You must purchase a public-viewing license to utilize this broadcast"
- Ihova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10If they could actually do that.... they wouldnt be frustrated into making up rules about size.
- DenTPuzz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15@skyshock21
So, if your friends don't like the Superbowl, then they get to eat your ass?
/joke - Pac56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Did anyone really expect something different from the "No Fun League"?
- brlittle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Dear NFL:
***** you.
Sincerely,
The owner of a 56" TV - goeatsmsht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I only watch the commercials.
- cmansley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Very interesting. Remember BBspot predicted this

No one is laughing now, nice job BBspot. - CRasH180, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That thing must be hard as hell to carry
- tateswayz91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8How are they losing money from people having huge parties for the superbowl? Seems like it would actually people who wouldn't watch it anyways making parties an advantage for them. Can someone please explain this to me?
- ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9http://www.lsl-law.com/publications/Superbowl.pdf

Basically, if you are trying to make money off of a Super Bowl event, you're in violation of copyright law.
If you use the word "Super Bowl" or other trademarked term in promoting an event, you're in violation of trademark law.
Its unclear if being a church nonprofit gives you a pass.
Personally, the NFL and the Superbowl can kiss my ass. I won't spend a dime on their ads or sponsors if they are gonna restrict the public and bars like this. - Ihova, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The rule only applies to mass out-of-home viewing events. Your TV in your home can be as big as you want it to be.
Still a bad PR move on the NFL's part - CatCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That's easy to fix -- just have the church break out their wine and crackers! Presto it's an instant sports bar!
- fasdfa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Is the NFL retarded?
I can understand if it was a DVD and it was being shown to 20 people, with no admission fee. They can argue they are losing revenue because only 1 person renting the DVD and showing it to 20 people.
How are they losing revenue on this? Its a free show to anyone who has a tv. It's supported by commercials. They are going to go to court and say what? Too many people in one place are watching our commercial sponsored show? - Coded1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I for one would like to welcome HDMI!! Without you we would never be able to start making #$#ed up rules like these one !!
- mre5765, on 10/12/2007, -0/+760 inches on HDTV wide screen. The NFL can take my remote control "From My Cold, Dead Hands”.
- johndi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Only if they are counted by Nielsen, otherwise the companies won't pay as much for the air time so the broadcasters won't pay the NFL as much. Ratings are everything.
What this article doesn't say is that the church that caught the NFL's attention was all about the Profits and was going to charge for admission. I still think it is a bad move PR wise - NightStryke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8you really think they are going to show up and measure your tv?
- BigPapi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Who says I'm watching the game? I just want to see the commercials!
- Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8But are Nielsen ratings really used to calculate Superbowl ad rates? The system is obviously designed to measure typical family viewing habits, not massive social events like the Superbowl. It seems that a simple poll would give a much better picture of how many people actually watched the game, and the network is free to charge whatever they want for ads, so why would the NFL care *how* people are watching it? Very silly.
- monticello, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Only 70% of America
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Wait a minute here. Excatly WHAT law(s) would be broken?????? Considering the SB is being broadcast over the air (not cable) I can view it in any manner I want.
Two, Can I not charge admission, not to watch the game, but to cover my expenses of feeding/entertaining/etc friends, family and neighbors??????? As I am not part of the NFL, nor have anything to do with the TV channel that broadcasts it, the NFL or anyone else does NOT have the right to tell me how I can assemble with other people.
In other words, seems like the NFL doesn't have a legal leg to stand on. - aakins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@truck87bp
Luckily there isn't a broadcast flag implemented, yet. So, until that happens you shouldn't be prevented from recording OTA signals, even if it is digital. Just be sure to watch out for future bills in the senate that may try to implement a broadcast flag, especially that sneaky Ted "the tubes" Stevens. Nice solution to unclog the tubes, just make everyone pay multiple time for access, therefore increasing cost, reducing demand. Must have modeled that after our stupid tax system. I would hate to only be taxed when I make the money, but thankfully I get taxed when I spend it too.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_flag - mdmoya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The NFL should McFly off the edge of a cliff for being so dumb.
Yeah, I got nothing. - nicepants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6What about multiple 50inch screens with the image stitched onto them all?
- spff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4with all these churches ripping off the NFL, its amazing that they have enough money left to pay the players. I am just thankful that the NFL (as a company) made it this far and that the commissioner has his 3 homes and a warm meal each night.
- prag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I am attending a very large superbowl party. Same every year. There will be sever large front projectors (2 upstairs and one in the basement), gambling and lots of alcohol. Enjoy the superbowl everyone. Oh, and F you NFL.
- goeatsmsht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh that's a good one!! Made me fall out of my chair laughing.
