"Harrison is just a product of the defense. Is it a coincidence that every player they insert in that position succeeds?"
- The fact that the rest of the defense is also very talented doesn't negate the fact that Harrison has played incredibly well.
If you consider that he wasn't even drafted, and that he'd been cut several times before actually starting, his accomplishments are even more remarkable because he apparently had less natural talent to work with. The time and effort he's put into improving himself as a player, and the impressive performance that he's shown as a result, seems to be where that award is coming from. - sgtbutterscotch, on 01/06/2009, -0/+5I'm feeling kinda Sunday.
- ryan5billion, on 01/06/2009, -4/+9Not the biggest Steelers fan but I absolutely DESPISE those whiney ass Chargers - Go Harrison and Palamalu
- boardthis, on 01/06/2009, -7/+11as a hawk fan it pains me to say this about any stealer but... harrison should have won the MVP as well. absolute beast of a season.
- FaithclubDotNet, on 01/06/2009, -8/+12The Steel Curtain is alive and well.

- Hockey37, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4I toast your IC with a Yuengling.
- hawksfan03, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4from an undrafted free agent to Defensive player of the year. He's got mad skills, and as good as Ed Reed is at making interceptions this guy is just as good at causing fumbles.
In reply to the guy above - are you referring to me? - rosenblat, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4Now I feel bad... I just buried jajajija's comment about Heinz Ward... GO STEELERS!

Harrison, and Rocky, and Franco and Lynn, We love you Pittsburgh Steelers. - fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Okay, so nobody has been able to "wipe that stupid smile" off Ward's face so far in his career, what makes you think the Chargers defense of all people are going to be able to do it now?
- KINGGS, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4DeMarcus' team didn't even make it to the playoffs, so I'm inclined to think his stats are less valuable than Harrison's.
- ScottMitchell, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Whiney ass Chargers? When did this team whine this year? They took the Hochuli (sp) gaffe like men. When they were 4-8 they kept playing, and never once did a player publicly call out their horrid coach or ask why LT was still in the lineup (he should have been on IR this year).
- hawksfan03, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3hawk fan as in seahawks?
- alecsputnik, on 01/06/2009, -3/+6um... ED REED????
- Hockey37, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hme86yacIKc&fea ...
Is he? - fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Ed Reed has so much less impact on a game than Harrison it's comical to even suggest otherwise. Reed's TD returns are overrated, and if you're going to argue a safety for DPotY, it would be Polamalu who had only 2 less INTs than Reed, but 32 more tackles. When you have only 41 tackles like Ed Reed, you shouldn't have a shot in hell at winning Defensive Player of the Year.
- ScottMitchell, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Sunday, Sunday
- ImBreno, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2it's polamalu
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3aujaEafmDo - shawtanic, on 01/06/2009, -5/+7Harrison did nothing the last 3 weeks of the season.
ED REED! - phyx726, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2The reason why James Harrison won the award is because he did it on the best defense in the league. If you dominate the opposing offense they rarely stay on the field. To have 16 sacks on a defense like Pittsburgh is an achievement. Demarcus Ware played well, but he was hardly on a good defense. Teams were able to run on Dallas which kept their defense on the field. Sure you can say James Harrison is a product of Pitt's system, but it still is a game of capable players.
This is the same reason why (usually) good defensive players on crappy defensive teams score high on Fantasy teams because they get more opportunities. All the Denver linebackers had a ton of tackles but it wasn't because they were a good defense. There a few exceptions out there such as, Jon Beason, James Harrison, and Barrett Ruud. Nmandi Asomugha is the best cornerback in the league but never leads the league in interceptions nor pass deflected, but everyone knows there's only one place to throw to and that's not Nmandi's side. - fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I don't know why people are digging you down, you weren't being rude and you may have a point. Ware and Harrison's numbers were very similar, but if team performance has anything to do with it, then I think that's why Ware lost out. Harrison and Ware are the only two who belong in the conversation. For those of you out there who think Ed Reed had a shot, Troy Polamalu had just 2 less interceptions at the safety position of the two which have less chance for interceptions, AND 32 MORE TACKLES
- NecroSexy, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Hhahahahahahahhahahahahha
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -3/+5Ware got robbed. He almost broke the single season sack record and had like 18 games in a row (granted going back to last season) with a sack. Harrison is just a product of the defense. Is it a coincidence that every player they insert in that position succeeds? No.
- zzzpoohzzz, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Yinz guys are wild
and i'll go with an IC light n'at - poopdigger, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Ed Reed is a better a better playmaker when the ball goes in the air, but Harrison makes more of an impact on every snap- run support and pass rush
- hawksfan03, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2The award was Haynesworth's until he got hurt
- fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Darren Sproles only happens against the undersized Colts defense, guy, not gonna happen against the best defense in the NFL...
- FearlessFreep, on 01/06/2009, -2/+4When the award is "Defensive Player Of The Year", the assertion can be made
- ImBreno, on 01/06/2009, -2/+4shoulda been 18-10 if the ref didn't mess up the call at the end on polamalu's pick
- KreegsMcSteves, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2no link to the vid?
- KINGGS, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Actually his streak ended in week 8 (which would make it a 10 week streak going back to last season).
It could be said that Ware is a product of a heftily sized d-line that features 900 pounds of man, not to mention the fact that the Cowboys use a 3-4 system themselves. - nmezib, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2funny, cuz it's true.
- fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Please, you don't really believe that, do you? What advantages and disadvantages did the Colts and Chargers have against eachother? Not much other than the Chargers homefield advantage, right? That and the Chargers offense presented some mismatches for the Colts undersized but quick defenders. And we also shouldn't have been that surprised that the Chargers beat the Colts since they have been giving them consistent hell the last few years. Now let's look at the Chargers coming to Pittsburgh: 1.) SD will be traveling from one coast to the other (this is a well-established crippling disadvantage in the NFL), 2.) SD will be leaving fair-weather California for 20 degrees and snowing Pennsylvania, 3.) LaDainian Tomlinson might not play and Antonio Gates is still nursing a high ankle sprain, 4.) Philip Rivers is easily perturbable and the Steelers D will have a much better chance to rattle him than the undersized Colts D, 5.) The Steelers D is both fast and big, so Darren Sproles isn't going to get away with what he did against the fast and small Colts D
I defy you to come up with a rational argument for a single Chargers advantage going into this game. - fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1exactly
- fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -1/+2How do you figure Ed Reeds 41 tackles, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 9 interceptions are more valuable than Harrison's 101 tackles, 16 sackes, 7 forced fumbles and 1 interception? That doesn't even make any sense. All Ed Reed does is sit back and play centerfield, picking off errant passes that his front 7 does all the work to create, while James Harrison is the one up there creating all the pressure on the QB that result in the same kind of opportunities that Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu get. Harrison is not only a tackler, not only a quarterback sacker, not only demands constant double and triple teams, but he's forced 7 fumbles, which can be easily argued as the LB equivalent of INTs
- fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1whoa, are you Alec Sputnik formerly/currently of the band Sputnik in Maryland?
- fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Somebody please rationally explain to me why Ed Reed comes close to deserving this award? He had 9 interceptions and 2 touchdowns and that is just about it. Harrison had 60 more tackles, 15 more sacks, 6 more forced fumbles, and a safety. Does anyone seriously believe that Reed being directly responsible for 10 more points than Harrison on the year outweighs the difference in tackles, sacks and forced fumbles? That doesn't make any sense. Troy Polamalu had just 2 less INTs and had a perfectly legal TD taken away from him in the Chargers game, and yet had 32 MORE tackles than Ed Reed this year -- it could be argued that Ed Reed wasn't much better than Polamalu, let alone Ed Reed being a more valuable defensive player than James Harrison, PLEASE
- fugularity, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Except you're wrong, and you perhaps need an analogy to an award from a different sport to see the error of your ways. Linebackers in the NFL who rack up tons of tackles, sacks, and in Harrison's case, forced fumbles are akin to power hitting corner infielders in the MLB. The Albert Pujols', Barry Bonds', and Alex Rodriguez's simply have a more complete impact on the game than do the specialists by comparison. Next to James Harrison, Ed Reed is a specialist, and simply does not have the same breadth of impact on the game. It takes an extraordinary outpacing of performance for a closer to win MVP in baseball, as well it should be for safeties in the NFL winning DPotY. Ed Reed's 8 more interceptions than Harrison (yes, James had one) do not come close to making up for Harrison's 60 more tackles, 15 more sacks, and 6 more forced fumbles.
