- OasisR123, on 12/01/2008, -5/+31The BCS does it again.....
there are no words to describe how fuked up that system is. - bradharrelson, on 12/01/2008, -1/+13"So the Longhorns will be watching two teams they beat play for the conference title, hoping that a Missouri upset could work in their favor."
- Oozinator, on 12/01/2008, -2/+11Just in case you (S7aind) aren't a TAMU fan, it's UT, not TU. "The UT" works as well.
- ReeferChiefer42, on 12/01/2008, -0/+7They both work great for your mom.
- MrTito, on 12/01/2008, -1/+8I'm so tired of the BCS. I've got no preference for OU or Texas, though I figured OU would get the nod. Every year the BCS proves the need for a playoff. I hate that ESPN just picked up the broadcast rights to the BCS games starting in 2010. I expect ESPN will use it's media clout to tamp down future BCS controversies and be anti-playoff.
- 9bpm9, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6In a 3 way tie in the Big 12, they use the BCS standing to choose the winner.
- Paradiddler45, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6God it's been awful :(
- thejokker, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6its much harder to argue that the 9th ranked team deserved a shot at the title than the 3rd place team
- Cowmin, on 12/01/2008, -1/+7"Let's say there's a playoff, and in the playoff, OU plays UT, and OU wins, and ultimately plays for the national title. What gets accomplished? UT fans can still point to their win in the Red River Rivalry game and say that they would win if they played a 3rd game."
Here's an example of why you're stupid: The Dallas Cowboys beat the NY Giants twice in the regular season last year. They lost to the Giants in the playoffs. No one had a gripe. Why? Because it's the PLAYOFFS and it's win or go home. It's not "let's see how many other factors other than wins and losses go into determining who plays for the championship." - ReeferChiefer42, on 12/01/2008, -2/+8Ok, well Texas Tech beat Texas, so why shouldn't they deserve to go too? Afterall, they have the same record. And don't tell me it's because OU beat Tech, because then you're back to Texas beat OU. All the teams beat each other. Love it or hate it, all teams are tied and the BCS system is *****, but by no means does Texas deserve to be the big 12 Champs more than Oklahoma or Tech, they're all deserving and this is why we need a damn playoff/tie-breaker system!
And this is coming from an Aggie who's had to sit through possibly the worst season of football in the school's history. I just want to see a fair system so those that did well can reach a deserving finish, dammit! - aralls, on 12/01/2008, -9/+15I was hoping for Texas if only so I don't have to hear that awful Boomer Sooner song they play every 30 seconds.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6thats because that is a pic of pool player Corey Deuel....who actually is an ass.
- Paradiddler45, on 12/01/2008, -2/+7EXCEPT it's not that simple.
Let us not forget that UT lost to Tech, yet OU crushed Tech. It's a triangle of confusion that you cannot oversimplify. - NaziHatinChimp, on 12/01/2008, -5/+10^This guy looks like an ass. Check his pic.
Have fun sitting at home watching the Big 12 championship next week. - penileartery, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6Yes, Texas beat Oklahoma by 10 points, and Texas lost to Texas Tech by 6 points. Texas Tech lost to Oklahoma by 44 points...enough said
- jls33fsls, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5Wow, what a joke. Big 10 football is what is overrated. Ohio State didn't belong in either of those national championship games and it showed, badly. Oklahoma has been a dominating presence in college football since Bob Stoops took over, that is simple fact and there is no denying it.
- eyepatch100, on 12/01/2008, -1/+645 - 35
- Eiknujrac, on 12/01/2008, -10/+15Texas was also hurt in this situation because Mack Brown is one of the only coaches left in the Big 12 with a sense of sportsmanship. He refuses to run up scores. When Bob Stoops keeps his starting quarterback in the game with 30 seconds to go, leading by 10, to score more points, you know something is wrong with the system. When pollsters are looking for "Style Points", there is no incentive to be a sportsman in the BCS anymore.
- xxxMrWhitexxx, on 12/01/2008, -4/+9Here is the reason this happened
OU has had a much tougher schedule then Texas and not only did they just beat Texas Tech they completely owned them
If you look at the scores between the same teams Oklahoma played and Texas played (Baylor, OK state, A&M, Texas Tech, Kansas) Oklahoma beat those teams by a difference 148 and difference in scores for Texas was 89.... a difference of 59 points
Texas beat Oklahoma by 10 points... Texas lost to Texas Tech by 7 points, and then Oklahoma beat Texas Tech by 44 points. Texas got lucky, the BCS sees that and thats why they bumped down. I can see why this is not easy for Texas to swallow though... The BCS system is F#$%ed up but has its logic
I am a fan of a play-off system... I would love to see Oklahoma and Texas play again, because watching Oklahoma slaughtering MU is going to be boring compared to playing Texas again which would be a good game - ralphodog, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6Head to head should decide this, Texas Tech should go.
- roddack, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5^ Because you Texas retards think that somehow the Tech game didn't matter want to just brush them aside and think it should really be only an OU vs Texas question as opposed to an OU vs Texas vs Tech question.
- Eiknujrac, on 12/01/2008, -6/+10I'm a Texas fan, but I expected this to happen. Head to head apparently means nothing anymore. I can guarantee you that after this year, the Big 12 will adopt the SEC rules for a 3 way tie-breaker.
This year also put Mack Brown (who was pretty neutral before) and Mike Leach on the list of coaches who are now actively advocating against the BCS. I realize there is a lot of money in the bowl games, but I still don't' realize why we can't just turn those bowl games into playoff games. I don't see why anyone would lose money over the deal. - goleopards1, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4Check out the College Football Championship Subdivision (former D1-AA) playoffs on ESPN or other local channels. Yes, in our league we HAVE a playoff system, amazing it is actually possible right?
- DickyT83, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5Ask the computer. Clearly it has a better grasp on college football than a potential panel.
- aralls, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5not gonna happen - MU is gonna get crushed yet again
- avaugha4, on 12/01/2008, -3/+6Exactly, if OU had lost Saturday you would be bitching about something else. If you hadn't lost to Texas Tech you wouldn't have this problem. I personally wouldn't mind seeing a rematch in the National Championship. If there is one team Mack Brown does not want to play again it is a healthy Oklahoma team. BOOMER SOONER.
- TWallaceWD, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Yes, it was all Stoops' fault that Auburn was left out.
- sn4keeyez, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3yeah, but Tech won at home against UT, OK won at home against Tech, and UT won against OK on a neutral site. Winning at home is a lot easier than people think
- LloydBentsen, on 12/01/2008, -2/+5As a fan and graduate of the University of Houston, I would like to say that it could be so much worse for all of you Longhorns, Aggies, and Red Raiders. I long for the days where all of our teams played in the Southwest Conference.
- jls33fsls, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4How about 108-23, only 2 seasons in a decade without 10 wins, 5 Big XII championships (most of any team), a national title, heisman trophy winner, etc etc? That is pretty damn dominant. Anyone that says OU isn't a good team is ignorant.
- ReeferChiefer42, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4It's called the BCS and it dictates more than just the Big 12, genius!
- Eiknujrac, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3So true.
- csakon, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Jesus, way to look like a douche and take us all with you. Did you even go to UT?
- A Longhorn - Enjoikr3w, on 12/01/2008, -2/+5You guys were losing 95% of the game and came back in the last second and still lost. Don't act like Tech was lucky for beating you. Yall were lucky the score wasnt more dramatic than it ended up being. You got raped. Just look at the stats for the game.
- ralphodog, on 12/01/2008, -5/+8Texas Tech beat Texas, therefore, Texas Tech > Texas plain and simple. They should send Texas Tech to the game.
See, I can play too! - S7aind, on 12/01/2008, -7/+10Three teams are tied with a 7-1 conference record (11-1 overall).
TT lost to OU
OU lost to TU
TU lost to TT
Who the hell do you pick to play in the Big 12 championship game? - roddack, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2after 4 other options are exhausted
- orlyfactor, on 12/01/2008, -0/+236-26-36
Wait, what the hell are we talking about? - MasterTroll, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Rebuttal: More teams get a shot at playing for the championship
- orlyfactor, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3It feels like I need a degree in statistics to figure out the BCS standings half the time.
- TWallaceWD, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2OU beat higher caliber teams and by high margins in some cases. That was obviously the deciding factor. OU is 4-1 vs ranked teams, UT is 3-1. Plus the beat OSU by 20, Texas Tech by 44, both ranked teams. Texas beat OSU by 4 and lost to Tech.
Those saying that since Texas won the head to head means they should be south champs are conveniently ignoring the Tech loss, which created the 3 way tie to begin with. You can't just throw them out because they got blown out by OU. They have the same damn record and beat Texas. - ThreeE, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3In the end, ou loses as they have to live in norman.
- eyepatch100, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2@ zombie
I have to give it to you that y'all played better that us in lubbock, but my point is that big XII north is *****, and of three teams that deserve a shot at the championship, only one gets to play (in a game that they practically can't lose). Why aren't you guys as pissed as we are?? - thebigdirty, on 12/01/2008, -2/+4It's okay zombietuba. Don't be so aggravated. I know living in Lubbock leaves a lot to be desired.
***** you too. - pakruse, on 12/01/2008, -0/+28 team playoff, yes - you'd still have teams bitching. If you did that this year, you'd still have two undefeated teams left out (assuming the big conferences pushed for tie-ins to the tournament, as they would undoubtedly do).
16 team playoff, though? Take all 11 conference champions and 5 at-large bids. Play the first round two weeks before new years, with the top 8 teams hosting. It's a free home game, and for the conferences without conference championship games, there's 2-3 weeks off before the tournament starts.
Play the second round the week before new years - 4 games at 4 of the better pre-new years bowls. Play the third round on new years - the Rose bowl and one other New Year's bowl. Play the championship game the week after New Year's.
This doesn't extend the season, and there's no way with every conference champion and 5 at large spots that anyone can really claim they were cheated out of the tournament. It can either be seeded like basketball, or you can make the games based on conference tie-ins (so that if the Pac-10 and Big 10 teams win their first two games, they still play in the Rose Bowl - that sort of thing). - Eiknujrac, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2I'm a Texas fan. If OU beat us in a hypothetical playoff game, it would shut me up. But in the only head to head game we had, Texas came out on top, so I'm still bitchin.
- thebigdirty, on 12/01/2008, -2/+4Why not bitch when your team beat the team that is going to the Big 12 champ to play another team that you beat?
- stereosaurus, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3Just to clarify, it's not like BCS standings are the first deciding factor...
1. The records of the three teams will be compared against each other
2. The records of the three teams will be compared within their division
3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of fi nish (4, 5 and 6)
4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents;
5. The highest ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series Poll following the completion of Big 12 regular season conference play shall be the representative
6. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative
7. The representative will be chosen by draw. - Cowmin, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2The Big 12 is just ridiculous for deciding their division champions (in the event of a three way tie of course) based on BCS rankings which are only supposed to be used to determine the BCS bowl games.
