- codered1322, on 10/22/2009, -0/+36Great move being so open about it and not just slapping them on the wrist quietly. The MLB should follow suit and do the exact same for the calls made in the ALCS game the other night.
- bobburn1, on 10/22/2009, -0/+31Error prone my ass, there is obviously someone on the staff on the take. Two similar calls, in similar situations to help a team score and effect the points spread. The person or people involved need to be removed from their positions.
- joesportsfan, on 10/22/2009, -0/+25Awesome.
- ollygb, on 10/22/2009, -0/+20yea, these guys possible affected the outcomes of 2 different games. this was a necessary suspension.
- WheezyMustafa, on 10/22/2009, -2/+22Arkansas should've upset Florida that game. Though we had some slip ups, the bogus calls by the officials really screwed our chances.
- Cerebron, on 10/22/2009, -0/+15Perhaps instant replay challenges could be extended to some of these questionable calls, so the game isn't decided by officials so often.
- rwbrinso, on 10/22/2009, -0/+13As they should -- you let those guys back onto center stage again and they screw up and the SEC would have a mess on their hands.
- suavivity, on 10/22/2009, -1/+14At the risk of sounding like a crazy conspiracy theorist, I agree with this completely. Most anyone who bets on football would tell you this.
Once a game's score starts approaching the line (in betting terms) near the end of the game, you start see some crazy stuff happen. Completely baffling calls by the officials, teams going for that extra TD when they don't need it, etc...
It's crazy once you know what to look for. - woofers07, on 10/22/2009, -0/+12Agreed, I was at this game, never booed for so long in my life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-O1QGjGFYlg
Pay attention to the score and time left. - suavivity, on 10/22/2009, -0/+9@woofers07 I just watched your link.
Holy Crap.
I'm not sure there's anything in the English language that can properly express the incompetency displayed there.
Honest to god I think the OSU coach should have walked his team off the field right there and refused to play another down. - abol684, on 10/22/2009, -1/+8every time i hear tebow's name i want to punch a baby.
- tomarocco, on 10/22/2009, -3/+10Anything concerning Florida is corrupt and error-prone...be it sports, law, love or politics.
- mezcalhead, on 10/22/2009, -3/+9what's new? the SEC is fixed. also, they've had a competitive advantage against other leagues for years by allowing extreme oversigning. they've recently 'restricted' it but not outright banned it. big deal. they basically get one extra recruiting class every 5 years by doing this...
Terry Bowden, head coach now at UNA (North Alabama) called a Birmingham sports show this morning to talk about his #1 ranked team (Div 1AA). When asked about his team he went into about a 5 minute discussion about recruiting. He said that he has 21 former division 1A players, which is more than they have ever had. He was asked why. His answer, the recruiting practices of the SEC schools, specifically oversigning. Imagine that.
He went on to describe what happens in the SEC. Paraphrasing, "they hire a big name coach for 3-5 million a year and what's the first thing the new coach says, 'I've got to get my players in here before we can win', and so he goes out and signs 30-35 players knowing he can only keep 25. He does that for the first or two and next thing you know he's up against the 85 player limit. That's when you start to see guys leaving teams for unspecified team rule violations, taking bogus medical hardships, or taking red-shirts. Then let's say these are 3rd or 4th year guys, good players, starters in some cases, and they are asked to sit, take a red-shirt, etc., but they graduate or they don't, but regardless the school (meaning the coach) doesn't want them anymore but they still have a year or two of eligibility left. That's where we (Div 1AA) come in. We take those guys now more than ever before. We can offer them a chance to start playing right away without sitting out a year."
Bowden was then asked about the recent (2009) rule change that now limits the number of players to 28. His response is that he thinks it will affect things, but there are still going to be a lot of high number classes and guys being asked to leave that he'll still get a good number of former D1 players. - jeffwmartin, on 10/22/2009, -0/+5In the south, whenever we see SEC in a headline, we think it's about football. Even if it is in the Wall Street Journal.
- protogenxl, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4I'M BLIND I'M DEAF I WANNA BE A REF!
- llamawoot, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4Or perhaps even all calls. I mean, its still up to the man in the booth or a coach to stop the game and get the review started.....but it sure seems like it would have helped in these cases.
- swollentiki, on 10/22/2009, -0/+4I agree with suavivity. There had to be some external factor to that call. I guess you could argue that the refs on the field was letting it play in hopes there would be a review to reverse the call, but that one ref was right there a few feet away with a clear view. I hope someone got fired for that.
If nothing else, if I was that coach I would raising hell until they reviewed it. Eject me or whatnot, I wouldn't let play continue until they reviewed it or hauled me out of there. - MooKooJoe, on 10/22/2009, -5/+9Has everyone here not seen the Buffalo Wild Wings commercials? Better question, have you ever been to Buffalo Wild Wings? It's real yo'. It's real.
- mezcalhead, on 10/22/2009, -1/+4when a BigTen game is low scoring, you say "the offenses stink". when an SEC game is low scoring, you say "they have great defenses".
- IphtashuFitz, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3Now if the MLB would just follow suit...
- pagno, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3Absolutely horrible wings. They spend all their resources on LCD tvs, nevermind that their food sucks.
- lynx44, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3Wow, I'm a UW graduate but that was quite possibly the worst officiating I've ever seen.
- EndouOuto, on 10/22/2009, -0/+3No
- aaronhoffmeyer, on 10/22/2009, -0/+2Lost?
- wolfing, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1I thought it read "SEX Prone Refs that use Suspenders in their Prime are Game from Saturday"
Need to get my glasses checked. - tacojohn48, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1I thought MLB refs could be demoted to the minor leagues.
- IphtashuFitz, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1That would result in an average football game taking 24 hours rather than the normal 3-4...
Only partially /s - kingbachbone18, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1Regardless of shady officiating (bogus calls for money, betting, etc..), the officials in the Arkansas-Florida game (I only saw that one, not BAMA-TENN) made two obvious bad calls late in the fourth quarter (Pass interference on Arkansas, Unnecessary Roughness on Arkansas), and one not so obvious (Off. Pass interference on Florida). The SEC made the right call on suspending the referees, even if the calls were mistakes.
- aradorn, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1UNA is playing my alma mater VSU (Valdosta State University) tonight =) hope we win so we can get into the playoffs....
- kenrblan, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1Just a slight point of correction. UNA is Division II not 1AA (FCS). My college is in FCS and I have definitely noticed the same trend. We have had transfer students from Memphis, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Duke and Vanderbilt in the past few years. It's not just the SEC, but they definitely contribute more than their share. Several of the teams in our conference have had as many as 6 or 7 new transfers per year on their rosters. It's to the point where FCS coaches should consider recruiting from FBS programs.
- geekmansworld, on 10/22/2009, -2/+3Yes.
- jordanlgta, on 10/22/2009, -7/+7Alabama will beat Florida. Now digg me down because I am showing you which team I am a fan off in college football.
ugh... - CaptainSegfault, on 10/22/2009, -2/+1So, not only are these refs error-prone, they're insider trading-prone? Or were they trying to securitize their calls into some sort of shady CDO? Must be really bad for the SEC to get involved.
- FeloniusMonkey, on 10/22/2009, -3/+2I blame this punk ass for that last Yankees game, and for every Philadelphia Flyers postseason failure over the last decade... all these zebras are the same.
- squeevey, on 10/22/2009, -8/+7Did anyone else read this and think the Securities and Exchange Commission?
- nd_miller, on 10/22/2009, -4/+2Don't suspend these guys...their terrible calls make SEC games bearable.
- Gorgonzola44, on 10/22/2009, -4/+2The Big Ten is football in slow-motion.
- feebes, on 10/22/2009, -12/+3I disagree.
While I understand the call was terrible, I don't think the outcome would have been any different in the end. Florida started rolling in the 2nd half and my money says regardless of that call Florida would have scored a touchdown on that drive.
It sucks for both of us though, you guys feel cheated and the validity of our win is questioned. - DBLOCK916, on 10/22/2009, -15/+2Why don't more people support tighter regulations on healthcare providers as opposed to handing it over to the government?
The government has proven throughout history that it ***** a lot of stuff up - be careful what you wish for. To Democrats: Will you support government-run healthcare when Republicans take power again?
